$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('clueless', 'A')aron - Why don't you have an expert tag ? Re: WisJim - He deals with Mentally Ill people all day, An expert ? Not sure on that.

I don't know what WIJim (who actually probably does qualify as my neighbor) does for a living but you may be confusing him with me. Either that or we both work with the mentally ill...

and if there is a good enough job doing that closer to home I need him to let me know so I can put a bullet into the skull of my long commute.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')orry... you're a brain & you're just gonna have to live with that.

So what the hell am I an expert in? The fact that some many experts are questioning their own expertise (or at least being labeled 'expert') shows an error in the system. But it's not like that hasn't been said.

I nominate the fact that most of you seem to spend your entire time on here and this the only thing everyone on here is an expert at is trying to make themselves look like they know something.

As far as I know, the closest I come to dealing with the mentally ill is here on the Peak Oil boards--and I'm not sure which one of you it might be.

As much as I appreciate the diverse expertise on this site- I think the idea of labeling people expert is.... horrible.
First of all- who is designating that label? Just you Aaron? That seems, well, a tad arbitrary.

Then there is the question of how you get that title and how it relates to PO. If you are an annoying poster and a cornucopian but you are an expert in mechanics and energy systems, do you not get the title? Do you have to be nice? Can you be an expert in dog grooming and get the title? How about people who have a wide diversity of skills but rarely bring them up on this site?

So here's my two cents- its arbitrary, undemocratic and completely unnecessary. Let people find their own favored posters on this board- no need for one person to appoint them...

Is it true that jayraymondson left PO.com because of this "expert" labeling??? I left a six-figure salary and developed a six acre compound with PO in mind... on the steering commitee of my localization network and communicate regulary with JHK and Bill McKibben.... recently organised a hike up a mountain to raise awareness on climate change.. I am Tar Sands to you Aaron, but to most of my friends I am the one that's most prepared for the inevitable. I liked your little breakfast video tho.... cute cat.

I don't want to be an expert, I want to be, "Borg Queen" [smilie=pottytrain5.gif]

However I don't feel that Plantagenet should be an expert. Maybe for him, adviser would be more appropriate but certainly not expert. Expert should be reserved for experts.

Who is an expert? Does Daniel Yergin get the title because he's researched oil economics all his life and is lauded in the press? Even though most of us disagree with him?

Or how about Bernanke? Is he an expert? In the world out there he is. Here he is a stooge that manipulates numbers to create the illusion that he is helping us... George Bush? Dick Cheney? Or is it just the right kind of expert...the ones that Aaron agrees with... So if you're not on his team...sorry not an expert...

I applied this label to a number of posters with whom I disagree on many topics.

What's so difficult about acknowledging apparent expertise?

There are many kinds ya know... not just content experts. Systems experts & intuitive thinkers, creative interpretation etc...

I acknowledge it's an arbitrary system, based purely on anecdotal evidence. That's why I asked for comment from everyone.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'O')r is it just the right kind of expert...the ones that Aaron agrees with. So if you're not on his team, sorry not an expert.

If its arbitrary and subjective, why create the label? Most here will find their personal "experts"- some may entirely disagree with your selection process. You are also likely to miss a breadth of knowledge and wisdom in some members-

Perhaps if it was entirely democratic with everyone voting on each selection...but even then...why bother? People will find their own gurus...they don't need to be labeled...

Think of it as a cyber head-nod acknowledging some perceived excellence.

A public acknowledgement of an accomplishment.
I have ranked members expert based on the recommendations of others here... not just myself. I continue to be open to suggestion.

I suppose you would do away with the post-count ranks as well huh?

Too divisive?

IMHO, the whole hoopla is silly when there are so many important things that need to be understood and dealt with....
