Modesty is a prime factor in determining expert status.

I nominate eastbay.

I don't know if he will accept (it might blow his proletariat status), but he is clearly an expert in the fields of self-improvement and useful conversation.

The real question is, what is the expert PERCENTAGE? Not of all members, but of active members---those who post with some regularity.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('sciencegirl', 'I') don't mind some people getting the tittle of expert, but to many people are being called expert now, and I am beginning to wonder if they really deserve the tittle.

"tittle" may have been a typo, but if you look it up in a dictionary "tittle of expert" seems appropriate here.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Tanada', 'I') nominate Shanny as an expert!

Not only does she know the in's and out's of the system very well, she has knowledge of a broad range of topics and makes many valuable contributions to PO.com.
But she's way too reasonable and nice. She makes me feel guilty for flaming and trolling.

If I'm an Expert, you can be sure it doesn't mean much. Every time I post something, I wonder whether my "title" will be stripped from me. It probably should, I'm not much of an expert on anything.

I think Aaron just thinks it's funny.

I felt the same way and I asked for mine to be removed and put back to the original system. I was kind of flattered by the title at first, but then it became a liability to me because I felt that an "expert" shouldn't be asking any newbie questions which I have lots of. :-D

I feel much better now that I'm no longer labelled an expert.

I hate phoney people and strive to not be one.

After being here for sometime, I think only a handful of people should be called experts and I've nominated a few of them myself.

Good for you SCF.

You are mature enough not to need the pat on the butt and a gold star [smilie=qcheerleader.gif]

Edited simply because I wish to add a positive suggestion:

IF we make the "expert" label meaningful by giving the reader a hint as to what that individual is an expert in...

For example IF Mr. X was an Expert in gardening, the label should read : "Expert Gardener."

That way, the label does not go to ones head. Also, the "Expert" will be more likely to accept, as they will not be weary to ask questions of others in areas not their specialty / Interest.

Also people need to keep in mind that not all "experts" agree on even some basic things in their field....so one should always look for a second opinion...using our example..."just like a doctor, a Gardener buries his mistakes"... [smilie=eusa_shifty.gif]

Thanks BT. Very nice of you to say that. A few kind words can have a wonderful impact. I'll share this by offering a few kind comments to others as the rest of this day progresses, and again tomorrow... and the next day too!

I just today noticed this posting of yours. I rarely ever read anything pertaining to this divisive and strange experiment of Aaron's. But he's The Boss so although I will periodically offer opinions on various topics apparently contrary to his, whatever he says goes and I have no problem with that.

Actually I'm considered an expert in one (some say two) additional area(s), and a few here already know that (you too, I believe), but it has nothing at all to do with the study of peak oil, however, nor do the elements of your kind and generous comments.

With that in mind, if by some bizarre alignment of the planets or for some other unexplainable reason, Aaron was to wake up one morning and anoint me as an expert in the field of peak oil, as he has done with so many other obvious non-experts in this most important field, I would request that it be rescinded as SCF wisely did because I want nothing to do with meaningless, misleading, and classist titles. They mislead readers into thinking the writer is an 'expert' in whatever they write, when in fact, in most cases around here anyhow, they aren't even close. Some may and others often do offer interesting commentary on a host of topics unrelated to Our Common Coming Disaster, but 'expert' is a major exaggeration and the wrong title for most 'experts' here.

The Virginian does offer a valid suggestion that I hope Aaron will one day consider. We really and truly do have a few genuine 'experts' in fields directly related to PO, and identifying them (and only them) with the nature of their area of expertise would certainly be quite useful to everyone. :)
