On today’s doubleheader episode of Double Down, Max Keiser and Stacy Herbert talk to Chris Cook about the 2020 energy outlook.
As Saudi Arabia takes 1.5% of Saudi Aramco public, DOUBLE DOWN asks former energy market regulator, Chris Cook, whether or not this is the sign of peak oil. He says that, in fact, it is a sign of peak demand. There is an infinite amount of oil . . . at a price . . . but consumers cannot afford that price and alternatives are being found. Chris Cook expects that oil will never go much above $60 again for any length of time. Regarding the new QE which is not QE (‘Quantitative Easing’), he believes this is oil-related, the Fed is providing liquidity to monetize US shale reserves. Cook is saying that the US has essentially fixed the dollar against its shale reserves. Tune into Double Down to hear more on what Chris Cook has to say about his bold and radical predictions for energy markets in 2020.

Ah, but wait! The CIA/Mexico/Afghanistan will be glad to supply you with opioids to kill the pain while you are dying.
And then there are the rare earths problem. Again, China supplies the most. Amerika is going down the shitter, one way or another. Pass the popcorn…

The earth, which has a finite volume can not possibly hold an infinite volume of oil in it, not at any price. What universe does this author live in??? There is a finite volume of oil, and it will run out some day.

Dooma, I had read about the meds a while back, but never posted it. When I came upon it now, I thought it might be useful info to those on meds. If you ever read labels, you might be surprised where things come from. And, that most parts of other things also come from China. Especially tech.
I think that China is much more self-sufficient than the US and Russia is even more self-sufficient than China. But you are not likely to see that in any “news”.
The magnificent US military (sark) is reliant on many countries for the parts for their weapons systems and missiles. About 80 countries for the F35 alone. I didn’t realize this until they threatened to take parts production out of Turkey. How do you run a military if you do not produce 100% of its requirements in-house? But then, most new stuff the US produces doesn’t work anyway. The US really is a sick joke.

You are spot-on Mak about US manufacturing.
Unfortunately, we don’t have much of a manufacturing sector left as it has all moved to China, but the US…they can’t make anything anymore.
They used to make great aircraft, but the F-35 is an expensive piece of crap that they have to keep throwing money into to save face. Then you have the B737 Max that crashed twice, and only a couple of weeks ago, a B777X exploded during a pressure test of the fuse.
I read about owners of brand new Tesla’s and how they should expect rust, thin paint & poor panel fit! When Japanese companies get serious about EV’s, Tesla will be in the same category as Jeep when it comes to resale.
And they have no viable space vehicles anymore and have to launch equipment on borrowed rockets. But I guess they have to spend all that $$$ on their military so they can plunder instead of trading as China does.

“New Data Shows Heat & Fast-Charging Responsible For More Battery Degradation Than Age Or Mileage”
https://tinyurl.com/rwwkr39 clean technica
“Until now. A company called GeoTab has created an EV Battery Degradation Tool to assess how battery life is impacted by 5 factors: Time High temperatures Operating at high and low state of charge High electric current Usage (energy cycles) After analyzing the battery health of 6,300 fleet and consumer EVs over 1.8 million days of operation, the GeoTab tool can now provide insight into how conditions in the real world influence the battery health of 21 electric car models from various manufacturers over a number of years. “Battery degradation is a natural process that permanently reduces the amount of energy a battery can store, or the amount of power it can deliver. The batteries in EVs can generally deliver more power than the powertrain components can handle. As a result, power degradation is rarely observable in EVs and only the loss of the battery’s ability to store energy matters,” GeoTab says in an online post. In developing the tool, GeoTab found that the the two biggest factors affecting the life of EV batteries are battery cooling and frequent high power DC charging. Age and number of miles driven are far less important to how long a battery lasts.”

“US Navy testing battery energy storage systems in two new transportable microgrids”
https://tinyurl.com/u2aaawo renewable energy world
“Last week, Northern Reliability, Inc. (NRI) of Waterbury, VT announced its selection by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) to design and build two transportable microgrid Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for the U.S. Navy…The microgrid will use solar energy and the BESS, along with Navy site generation, to provide emergency backup electricity to critical Navy electrical loads. The ability of microgrids to enhance electric reliability and resilience in response to local grid power outages is currently the primary driver of their deployments, especially for U.S. military bases. Microgrids are being increasingly deployed at critical, non- military facilities such as hospitals, fire stations, and airports to provide uninterrupted power during local electric utility outages…“Microgrids installed for backup power on military and non-military sites are currently customized according to each site, which result in costly and, at times, lengthy design and installation time periods. There is a need to demonstrate a standardized microgrid configuration consisting of distributed energy resources (DER) easily adaptable to a wide variety of electrical and non-electrical siting requirements,”

“Busting myths around baseload generation, LCOE and energy storage”
https://tinyurl.com/swsuren renewable energy world
“LCoE is a useful indicator when a high proportion of generation is from intrinsically-flexible generators such as hydropower or thermal generation from fossil fuels. LCoE is not useful when assessing the costs of an energy system powered mainly from renewables. Wind and sunshine are intermittent resources that do not correlate perfectly with demand. The intermittency brings additional costs. To run an energy system largely from renewables, some major sources of flexibility are needed to reconcile the difference between the availability of natural resources for generation and the demand for power. The cost of providing the flexibility could exceed the cost of the primary generation by a substantial amount and therefore total system cost must be considered…Misunderstanding #1: Baseload generation is good Put simply, If renewable generation coupled with storage could be an economically viable solution for the demand remaining after a large slice of constant-power generation was already satisfied by inflexible nuclear power, then this combination solution would be even more cost-effective if scaled up to meet the entire need with no nuclear power. In short, inflexible “baseload generation” is bad, not good!…Misunderstanding #2: Large amounts of inter-seasonal energy storage will be needed in a system powered mostly with renewable energy…Taking an electrified transportation system into account also along with some penetration of heat-pumps for heating, improved insulation standards and strong growth of energy consumption for data-processing, it is clear that the seasonality of demand will decrease significantly in future. In that case, we can find a blend of solar power and wind power that almost-perfectly matches the once-per-year variation in demand. The implications of the misunderstanding about inter-seasonal energy storage are very significant. Failing to appreciate and capitalize on the major seasonal variation of wind power in the UK leads to the conclusion that energy storage capacity much in excess of 100TWh would be needed for a largely-renewable UK. This in turn prejudices towards conclusions that (a) gas combustion with CCS will be cost-effective in the future and (b) that extensive production of hydrogen will need to happen to absorb energy in summer and consume more in winter. These conclusions have the secondary effect that the economic case for all TMES technologies is severely and unfairly damaged. In reality, a UK powered largely by renewables and having ~10TWh of TMES together with a slight (~5%?) over-capacity of renewable generation with the correct mix of solar and wind power is probably the cost-optimal solution for a secure, affordable and net-zero-CO2 energy system. The author does not suggest that no long-term energy storage is required. Weather varies and our ability to predict it over timescales measured in years remains rather poor. It would be prudent to implement some long-term storage – probably ~25TWh. This might comprise some biomass in dry stores, some hydrogen in caverns and/or synthesised liquid fuels like ammonia in tanks.”
REAL Green on Wed, 18th Dec 2019 6:52 am
This is another techno optimist piece that sounds great on paper with techno speak but the reality is it is taking into account too many theoretical assumptions about perfect mixes and yet to be perfected TMES (thermal mechanical energy storage) systems Personally I think a net-zero-CO2 is inaccurate also because the amount of carbon that goes into all the other things that make this system function. A net-zero-CO2 system like described is a highly synchronized natural and technical condition that almost always has grey areas of failure. This present dangerous implications for grid failure because it is both complicated technically and complex and not yet understood fully systematically. Mix in the natural world and human nature and you get an even more dangerous mix.
A better approach would be to be realistic about the growth of renewables into a position of replacing baseload generation on a very gradual basis. Today we have policy pushing fast transition which is very dangerous. This can be better achieved by changing behavior contingent to the technical changes IOW try to change less technically and more with behavior. People must live different if they want to reduce the carbon needs of the grid. This is the key not more technology. What this means in today’s world is that this kind of requirement won’t sell to the general public so you make shit up with techno talk and take chances.
What this should mean is developing ways for society to live with intermittency as much as trying to solve the problems of intermittency with techno solutions. Techno solutions almost always have consequences that are new problems. Storage is nowhere near enough today both short term and long term. Overcapacity of renewables needed to push the envelope of renewable penetration in the grid is not there. There is not enough of either and the case of decarbonizing all those other imputes that support renewables is not there to call it a net-zero-CO2 system.
Building a system that attempts to do what is possible knowing it is not enough is a better approach. This then forces adaptation and mitigation strategies to be incorporated into the approach and this definitely reflects behavior changes. In fact huge behavior changes because it basically forces a population to accepts eventual failure as part of the goal. This means the population is proactively building a system to face what will be failure instead of building a system that is supposed to be a transition paradigm that will instead fail and fail worse than a system with failure built into it. Of course, this is not going to happen because people can’t handle the truth but those in the leadership that can deal with the truth of failure should consider it because their asses may be on the line.

That’s a 54% step change, which is not happening organically as a function of 6% Chinese economic growth. As such, the Chinese government will have to pull levers and third countries have to lose export orders. In terms of manufactured goods the only games in town are the EU, Japan and Korea. The IMF in their recent Article 4 paper on China estimated that about half of the import displacement would be born by Europe. In the chart below, the IMF had assumed a $200bn/ year deal to halve the US trade deficit with half of that falling on the Eurozone.”

The Davy’s Sinophobic spew gets even more rank and smelly. China is taking the US down, one step at a time; financially, economically, technically and educationally.
The “trade war” is ALL in China’s favor. The US acts as if there are no other sources for China’s needs except the (non)exceptional Amerika. Tell that to the Brazilians, Russians and Argentinians.
China imports more from five other countries than from the US. Besides the EU, the other four are from Asia. About $75B worth compared to the US $9B. China can just increase purchases elsewhere and Amerikan goods can rot.
https://tradingeconomics.com/china/imports-by-country (Oct. 2019)
As far as China’s exports, they are exporting less and selling domestically. But, their market is still growing outside China and they could just ramp up those sales. The US is not exceptional/self-sufficient. It needs what China makes and the Chinese know this. Read the labels on your “stuff” Amerikans. ‘Made in China’ will be dominant.
