Everyone experiences collapse in their lives: you may lose your job, get sick, or a close friend or family member may die. Collapse also happens to structures such as buildings, and on a larger scale affects whole systems like companies, communities or even civilisations. In his latest book, Before the Collapse: A Guide to the Other Side of Growth, Ugo Bardi sets out an approach for facing failure and collapse on all scales. He calls his method the “Seneca Strategy” based on the teachings of the ancient Roman philosopher, Lucius Annaeus Seneca.
Bardi draws on Seneca’s philosophy to explain why collapse is a necessary part of our lives and the world, and why trying to avoid it may lead to bigger problems later on. Seneca recognised that growth is slow but ruin is rapid, yet sudden collapse does not have to take us by surprise. In six concise chapters, Bardi outlines the science behind the collapse of complex systems, how the future can be modelled, and gives numerous examples of past and possible future collapses. Some of the cases Bardi lists include natural disasters, like Florence’s Great Flood, the collapse of a business such as the bankruptcy of the video rental service Blockbuster, as well as famines, epidemics and depopulation. As Seneca famously said: “Nothing that exists today is not the result of past collapse.”
Despite the subject matter, Before the Collapse is not a pessimistic book. Although Bardi emphasizes that technological progress might not prevent collapse, he stresses that the best strategy of coping with collapse is not to resist at all costs. It is possible to rebound after collapse, argues Bardi, and the new condition that arises may even be better than the old. The book finishes with a self-help style reference list summarising the six key things we should know before a collapse is imminent.
The practical tips in this book will appeal to any readers seeking a philosophical self-help guide for coping with collapse in their lives. Before the Collapse also provides general readers with a scientific analysis of local and global disasters and offers a pragmatic approach for preparing and weathering difficult times.

Ugo Bardi teaches physical chemistry at the University of Florence in Italy. He is interested in resource depletion, system dynamics modeling, climate science and renewable energy. Fayez al-Sarraj, the Chairman of the Presidential Council of Libya and prime minister of the GNA, agreed. That resulted in this curious map.”

This kind of thinking is typical out of FAKE Greens. While I agree carbon needs to be taxed, I also believe behavior needs to be modified first and foremost. The behavior in question is the desire to be affluent, to be affluent in the sense of the modern car culture. Talk to any well-off FAKE Green and they will look gut shot over the idea of being poorer. They still want their car and holiday away but green. It doesn’t work that way. They feel you can tax carbon and still be affluent. The car culture can be sustained with carbon taxes??? The airline industry with electric planes and syn fuel??? You can have greater affluence but it is a very difficult affluence of the mind and spirit. It means low carbon localism nobody wants to live these days because that is what they have in the 3rd world. It doesn’t have to be ll the way to the 3rd world but it needs to head that direction.
FAKE Greens are big on regulations and policy. They love the idea of socialism. The problem comes in when they want to apply these ideas to reality. The reality is we are carbon trapped and if you are going to deal with that trap as in mitigate it in the name of green, you are going to have to be poorer. Germans are some of the wealthiest people on earth and have some room to adapt this position and still be well off but not that much. Wealth is very difficult to manage or you don’t have wealth. Wealth is managed by growing and preserving. That takes carbon in the end. You don’t eat and live nice ideas. You can’t have this wealth and not be drenched in carbon. You can’t enact policy to penalize carbon and not suffer consequences. A new idea of wealth should be preserving in decline which means house cleaning and less comforts.
No amount of renewables and EV’s are going to eliminate carbon. This is the big lie of FAKE Greens. If they would admit to the carbon trap they are in and be realistic about managing and adapting to less carbon then I salute them. Lower carbon is the name of the game climate or not. It is about reducing our footprint both for resilience and survivability but also climate. Yet, don’t think for a moment that this will not have consequences. It means pain and suffering maybe not initially when the low hanging fruit is picked but later as all these various regulations from policy converge negatively against growth.
Places like German are facing a perfect storm of consequences and FAKE Greens are hoodwinking people by saying we can fix climate and live well. No, stable climate is out of our control. You can go low carbon because it is smart in a collapsing world but you are not going to save climate besides Brown DENIALIST are as numerous as FAKE Greens. You can go low carbon understanding you will put yourself at a disadvantage and suffer those consequences. If you go into that situation with that attitude then you will actually be stronger than the Brown DENIALIST. The reason for this is you will be forced to be tougher and beat the rush. Now to be fair to Germany and give them credit, people are not going to do this unless policy pushes it. So FAKE Green is better than Brown Denialist longer term. That said FAKE Green affluence is still a lie and lies are corruption and eventually lies always are accounted for.
