China read the American genome projects PR and decided they could move in on the field like they moved in on PCs and solar cells. So they created vast sequencing factories and drove the price down. The problem is that genomics has never had a business model behind it except for the selling the hardware and reagents (or services) themselves. The miraculous new biotech products that were supposed to have altered civilization by 2005 are still nowhere to on the radar screen. Now there's China, holding their dicks and looking silly because they bought into the whole thing just as all these services became commodities and the research itself has almost no strategic value for them. It has no value to China because China can't sell pharmaceuticals when they can't even keep poison out of baby food.
