$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('mekrob', 'K')nowledge of spanish first-hand would give one a very good advantage to mastering English in only a few years as they are closely related.

Hmmm...do you think so? English is not a Romance language like French, Italian, etc. There is little similarity between English and Spanish.

I learned English as a second language in high school in Peru. Then I attended an American university in Beirut, and then I moved to the US for a few years for grad school. If you want to pursue a graduate degree in the social sciences in the US, you'd better read and write in English as well or better than any American graduate student in your field.

Maybe in America it is uncommon, but in many Arab countries and Europe it is not unusual for people to be perfectly fluent in 2 or 3 languages.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('mekrob', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'M')iki, How do you have so much time everyday to post all these wonderful posts at po.com? I realize a lot of ME know english, but your english is excellent! How did you get such a good mastery of the English language if you live in Lebanon all your life? Have you been to the United States of America (aka so called leader of the free world?)

If you believe she hasn't been outside of Lebanon her entire life, then where they hell did she learn Spanish which she has demostrated many times? Mexicans aren't invading that nation as well are they???

She was born in South America and lived there for several years before moving to Lebanon, she claims. Knowledge of spanish first-hand would give one a very good advantage to mastering English in only a few years as they are closely related.

I know this is hard to accept for most English speaking people, but it is fairly common for most educated, professional people in other parts of the world to be proficient in at least 3-4 other languages. English is of course the most common, and for good reason. I have one client (Advanced English Conversation) that is fluent in German, Russian, Norwegian (which means she can get around in Sweden and Denmark) and English as well as her native language of Polish.

I had group lessons at an international company where the receptionist could effortlessly answer each incoming call in either Polish, English, French, and Russian.

Speaking languages other than English, is only miraculous to native English speakers. For everyone else, it is a fact of life...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('lateStarter', '(')remember, I grew up in the US = short attention span and mostly interested in T&A type of entertainment. I have tried to amend my ways though. I realize that what all of us are facing, is very serious!

Hmmm...judging from the "miki poll" :), I'd think you're bothered by my posts.

Yeah. I totally agree with you on this.

PS: And what is an American doing in Polland and still watching T&A entertainment at the age of 30+? (disclaimer: I'm wild guessing here).

Back to #1: I meant that I grew up in that environment, not that I embraced it. In general, the average US citizen is much more interested in entertainment than in watching or discussing anything of significance (not that they could find anything of significance by watching their only outlet to the world - TV)...

Next: the 'Miki' poll... I think from the options for the poll, I gave people enough room to acknowledge that even if they were disturbed by your version/view of the world, they could at least admit that you made them think. You did. Congrats!

I am very saddened by what I see happening in the world. I don't even have your youthful energy to put up a fight anymore. I have resigned myself to 'observer' status. I don't mean to appear indifferent.

I haven't watched TV (other than the weather) for several years now... It would probably help me learn Polish faster, but we seem to have the same nonsense here in Poland now that infected the US.

 You traced her back to the RIPE NCC headquarters. RIPE is responsible for allocating all the IP addresses in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

As least you narrowed it down to her being in the Eastern hemisphere. Keep trying Sherlock.

A nice house, where mom makes taboulli salad. Let's keep this as friendly as we can. Miki is opinionated but civil, as we've seen since the bombs stopped falling. BTW, Miki, I saw in that movie I talked about that Iraqis are very divided in their opinions, too. Many would dread going back to a Saddam regime. You said yesterday that maybe it was alright to go in there for a while, to take out Saddam, but we should have left after a year or two, something like that. That doesn't make sense. If we had to go in there, and I'm not sure we did, once we're there we can't leave the place in chaos. That would be immoral. And it would be un-American.

If you knew Fus7a then you'll realize that Spanish and English have a lot in common as far as grammar and such, not to mention a good bit of vocabulary as well. The common alphabet is a huge plus.

On the surface, English and Spanish don't have alot in common, at least for Americans. But the only major difference is sometimes the nouns and verbs are inverted as are nouns/adjectives. But in many other languages, such as Fus7a (not sure about 'aamiyah) and German, the subject comes at the end of the sentence (Reported that the President will arrive in Egypt tomorrow the newspaper). The absense of 'to be' can also be a bit awkward (God greatest; I boy; etc). Then you have complex numbering system(book, two books, three books, 10 book), missing words (I know a man drives that car - missing 'that' or 'que'), plural/singluar complexes, 5 different words for negation (la, ma, laisa, lam, lan), idaafa, etc. In Spanish, these areas are much more similar to English. Spanish and English have PLENTY in common with each other.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'M')aybe in America it is uncommon, but in many Arab countries and Europe it is not unusual for people to be perfectly fluent in 2 or 3 languages.

When did I ever say otherwise? Obviously you count as one. I was simply commenting on the poster before me "(Miki), How did you get such a good mastery of the English language if you live in Lebanon all your life?". I was mentioning that you'd lived and been born in S. America, from which you learned Spanish and could have "easily" learned English. I've never been to the ME, but with very little trade with Hispanic countries, there's little reason for any Arab nations to be speaking/learning Spanish (unless in Maghreb).

Oh, I see what you mean. As everything, it all depends on perspective. English is certainly much more similar to Spanish than to Arabic or Russian or Chinese. You're right.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')hen you have complex numbering system(book, two books, three books, 10 book), missing words (I know a man drives that car - missing 'that' or 'que'), plural/singluar complexes, 5 different words for negation (la, ma, laisa, lam, lan), idaafa, etc
.

Ahhhh Arabic. I'm good with languages, but Arabic is just too difficult! Lebanese can learn English and French so easily, but for for a foreigner to learn Arabic it is so hard! I'm thankful that I can understand and speak (with many grammatical mistakes) the Lebanese dialect. But when it comes to formal Arabic, I don't understand a word (and I've been here for 10 years!). I took a course in university "Arabic for foreigners", but I barely learned the alphabet. But then again, one could live in Lebanon forever speaking just English or French and not have any problem, so I was never really forced to learn Arabic.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')'ve never been to the ME, but with very little trade with Hispanic countries, there's little reason for any Arab nations to be speaking/learning Spanish (unless in Maghreb).

True. In Lebanon though, many people have family that migrated to Latin America (there are more Lebanese in Brazil than in Lebanon!), so there are people that speak Spanish, but they're a minority and they usually speak Arabic too. There are not many Peruvian Lebanese. My family is one of the few Peruvian Lebanese families that exist.

PMS: there are quite a few Mexican Arabs that can enter the US legally. The terrorists of 9/11 were in the US legally as well.
