A phyical object is inheirently neutral and cannot be good or bad. Is a gun good or bad? No. it is a piece of metal. Is a flower good? No, it is a collection of tissue and organic matter. Is weed good, is it bad? No, it is a substance which alters how you think, and how you feel. In fact, I am high right now.

How you choose to behave when you are using a substance is up to you. Abusing a certain substance is up to you. Please open your mind for just a second, before categorizing everything not acceptable by the nimwited society we live in as bad... mmmkay?

As a Dutch student, I smoked weed almost daily for about 10 years. (from age 17 to 27) Overall I'm not unhappy with that, but looking back I realise: What was I thinking? Those were certainly years where I did almost nothing to improve my overal situation, and that was a waste of valuable time. I managed to take care of the most important things: namely getting a good education and a good job, so I can't complain. Question is: Where would I be if I had never smoked weed? Probably even better-off!!!

And yes, I do know several people who I believe have problems due to excessive smoking of weed. However, the danger of smoking weed is certainly far, far less than the danger of doing hard drugs like cocaine, crack and herione. That stuff really destroyes the soul, while weed just tweaks it abit while leaving practically no long-term damage. I'd say excessive weed smoking is LESS dangerous than excessive alcohol use, for the mind and the body, to put things in perspective.

Oh and one more thing: Smoking weed CAN be addictive. Really! I've seen it! However, once someone decides he's had enough of it, quiting smoking weed turns out to be no problem at all. It just needs a relatively small lifestyle-change, in my experience with other people who decided to stop.

In view of Peak Oil my sincere recommendation would be: stop smoking weed! You'll need that boost of sharpness to the mind, and the smokin' days of wonder, dreams and laziness should be behind you for good.

Inherent Good or Bad?

Unread postby EddieB » Fri 06 May 2005, 09:29:48

I disagree with the staement that an object can be neither good nor bad. Obviously material substances only have the values we imbue them with, but the objects themselves DO have biases. Guns are designed to kill. Spades are designed for gardening. Nuclear power plants require large centralized nations to control all the inputs and outputs they demand. Microhydro turbines are easily tuned to small community uses in ways that nuclear power never can be. So the actual objects DO support certain actions/uses. Maybe you could argue that the value then lies in the intention of the builder, but the final product does have a bias toward supporting healthy human interactions or destructive human interactions (with each other or with the environment).

I agree on most of your points. I smoked daily for 1,5 years, and in retrospect, I probably should have used more restraint.. I developed some mostly transient social/mental problems around that time, the weed was not the only reason for the problems (loneliness was the biggest reason), but it may have exacerbated them. Kids, don't sulk and smoke ;)

But I don't think the decision to smoke or not should necessarily be binary, I mean it is possible to smoke a bit on special occasions or a couple times a month. I actually see it as beneficial for me to toke up and contemplate sometimes, and keeping it at that is not hard anymore; I've experienced what it is like when I smoke all the time and I dont want to do it again. But i occasionally wish to switch to the different perspective to life. I think thats the best part of it, but it gets wasted (no pun intended) when smoking all the time; there is no contrast to the ordinary.

I've done all kinds of stuff: weed, LSD, mescaline, mushrooms, salvia divinorum...

I stopped doing hallucinogens because they last too long. I'm still a fan of Salvia Divinorum extract, but it's so powerful that it is very rare that I touch the stuff.

I stopped doing weed mostly because I hated the process through which I had to get it. Right now weed is a two hour round trip, so I don't bother with it. I guess if it was available local, I'd do it occasionally. If I could legally grow it, I totally would.

Instead, I just homebrew mead. :-D

Gee, and here I was thinking that drugs completely altered your thought process and made you do things you normally wouldn't do if you weren't under their influence.

I have never smoked any weed, but from what you guys are saying it sounds like it is the equivalent of alcohol. It is possible to abuse/overuse the drug and it also possible to be an occasional toker. So my question is, if pot was legal would that lead to more people becoming a "pothead".(I'm assuming a "pothead" is the equivalent of an alcoholic for pot. ) Is the cost and difficulty of getting the drug determining the number of people who abuse the drug?

I think this whole discussion of drugs/alcohol in regards to Peak Oil is actually very interesting. Oil and drugs/alcohol have one thing in common with some people: inelastic demand. Addicts absolutely must have it no matter what the price. When supply chains of goods across the country (including illegal ones) starts to break down, the price of illegal drugs and even cigarettes could possibly soar even faster than oil does.

How will the average person be able to afford their cigarettes/beer/weed when they can barely afford to buy food? You can add withdrawl pain/anxiety to the large list of things that will create problems and make people very angry when things start to get bad.

How bad smoking weed is now is debatable. But I think in light of Peak Oil everyone should be in agreement that it's a pretty stupid habit to continue. Don't get me wrong, I'm milking as much fun from our society right now as I possibly can. Videogames are my personal vice. But I can walk away from the Xbox just fine without being left with any physical symptoms.

If you smoke weed now, do you think you'll still be able to afford to when things start to get bad? Even if you could, do you think it would be a wise thing to spend your money on? I know withdrawl symptoms from weed aren't as dramatic as those of other harder drugs, but when would you rather go through withdrawl? Now, or when TSHTF?

Hmm,i know some people who will make some money then :-D .. As about paying for pot, wise smokers don't buy their little vice; they grow it  !

Kinda cheap to do,easy to grow yourself and don't need much space(in fact,it would be why it is not legalised yet..you can't tax and make money from something people could do in their backyard or grow it in hided closets like today) and here in Canada, the Cops will just close their eyes if you have less than 5-6 plants  ...

Another bonus is : they know exactly what they smoke  !

Even more, there is a good side to grow pot after PO :

Pot can be used in many ways as a cheap substitute for a LOT of the costy pharmaco-drugs. Ask the French's ! Pot became criminal decades after the US..and when it became illegal, the sales of Prozak and sleeping pills skyrocketed almost overnight 8O !!!!
