What actually left the hat seller's store in the whole deal? 15 real rubles and a hat. So he lost 15 rubles and whatever the hat cost him which was presumably less than 10 rubles. Sounds like a scam and the guy who bought the hat was working for the guy next door who was unloading a fake note that somebody unloaded on him. It is confusing and I can imagine Tolstoy laughing as he wrote it.
