I hate to use the expression but all the peak oil doom is masking at least a number of positive things

1. It might actually have saved us all from catastophic or even irreversable climate change
2. It will sound the death knell of the idiotic lie that material living standards are all human beings care about

In my posts I've always tried to stress the opposite ... but ignoring the positives is limited thinking

I agree. It's quite possible that the simple fact that non-renewable resources don't last forever might very well be a good thing for us and our little rock.

So where do we do from here? Either we choose from the left hand list and work together to reduce our numbers, or nature will choose from the right hand list and force us to die or kill each other.

It's in the interest all of us to try to work this out. A gradual decrease in population is better than a die-off any day.

There is no guarantee that peak oil will avoid global warming. Actually, some people think that it's likely to make it worse, when countries turn to coal as a substitute.

As for the second thing... I don't really think that many people are that materialistic. Everybody cares about their material standards, but few actually think that there isn't anything else in life.

Doesnt matter in the end. I'm more worried about Peak Sun then Peak Oil.
We can conserve and get by Peak oil, but come Peak Sun we're all gonna burn to a crisp man. 8O

Nah, that can be managed, easy: What could possibly go wrong?
As Canadian as ... possible, under the circumstances

Bingo !! Go to the "fromthewilderness" web site and do a search on runnaway global warming:

Peak oil will not be a blessing in disguise with regard to global warming. The end of the oil age could very well push us into an age of runaway global warming. Coal will not be able to support the kind of energy-intensive economy which we have built on oil and natural gas. It will be a faltering effort from a civilization in denial, intent on clinging to unsustainable ways. It will fail in the end, but in this last mad burn-off of energy resources, we may very well incur the demise of life on this planet.

That is plain silly Specop, do some research about the lifespan of suns! Our Sun has been active for 4.6 billion years and has enough fuel to go on for another five billion years or so which gives you plenty of time to polish your finger nails and to pick your teeth.

Besides that, conservation does not prevent Peak Oil, it just delays it.

That's true Teclo, Peak Oil will bring a lot of people down from their high horses, eventhough as of now I would not call it a lie that material living standards are all that human beings care about - 99.9% qualify for that statement! I would say that our eating habits need some serious revision first of all. Do some research of how much energy goes in the raising of farm animals.

I can see what you mean... exhaust one fuel move onto the next a bit like the way organisms (or even the sun) works getting less and less efficient

But I can only see this happenning if we continue to go for a maximum consumption style economy, which would be suicide

And also there's going to be one hell of a financial collapse which will challenge our assumption on how we consume the ground we're living on and all the stuff in it?

I just look around and all I see is waste, we don't need 90% of the junk we produce and the rest is designed not to last. ... yeah I didn't mean to say all we care about is material things.. but thats the message we are being given, and the nature of the consumptionist economy

If we don't invent a better system logic states the population will have to decrease surely we don't just live in an overgrown petri dish... !!?!?!

To be honest I've lost some sleep over peak oil, let it get to me, now I'm beginning to enjoy it, will we make it, will we screw up?
It actually like being *in* a movie and its very interesting. I noticed the new pshycology (can't spell I know) forum what a great idea, will post there I think ;)
