$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('rwwff', 'A') full, armored assault on Tehran, I think folks would be more up for; running patrols around a mud-brick police building waiting for insurgents to take pot shots at you isn't what most marines signed up for.

There's truth in that. The marines aren't trained to stand around picking thier noses.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('rogerhb', 'S')ounds like a real bummer if "you had other priorities".

On the one hand I wouldn't like being called up unexpectedly to serve out my last year in the inactive reserves back on active duty. On the other hand I would know that I signed the contract back 7 or 8 years ago in the full knowledge that they could call me back if they needed me.

I also think it is dumb to send Marines or Special Forces out as national guard replacements, which is what this sounds like to me.

But think what is considered normal compared to five years ago. You now have National Guard being regularly sent overseas.....

Before you say, "well, duh", have a think about that and realise how much has changed and is now just accepted as normal.

You know what's funny? The attitude of these people.

Ohh my gosh! You mean if join the military I might get shot at? This isn't what I had in my mind when I signed up 8 years ago.

Folks what ever happened to the good old days? When a Roman citizen signed up to become an infantryman....it was 4 LIFE. If your Centurion told you to march till you fell off the side of the flat earth YOU said "yes sir". NO bellyaching allowed!

Well that is not true really during Vietnam, soldiers would do a tour of duty then be rotated out of the war.

Because of the lack of man power the poor bastards who signed up, have seen the military extend their service agreements. Until you are discharged the military owns you and can do what ever they want to you.

A friend of mine who fought in Falloujah did his tour and is being sent back in a year. The guy has serious post traumatic stress disorder from all the crap he went through. When he returned home he found his wife had been cheating on him now he is a divorced Father of three. The guy is a wreck and he is not functioning.

The military is screwing these men and women over make no mistake.

I'm not for the war, but I would be willing to have my taxes go up to pay for lifetime counseling for any of our soldiers who have seen combat.

Very good point, the National Guard should NOT be going overseas, supplementing the active duty guys. We should be staying here, getting ready for all this terrorism they have been trying to scare us with for 5 years now.

I just found out last week that I get to go to Afghanistan AGAIN in January...What a bunch of bullshit.

The NG was deployed overseas extensively in Viet Nam and IIRC units were also activated and deployed in WW II. It is not a new thing, the NG was designed to provide a ready force for the Army, not college educations for its membership.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'F')ollowing World War II, National Guard aviation units, some of them dating back to World War I, became the Air National Guard, the nation's newest Reserve component. The Guard stood on the frontiers of freedom during the Cold War, sending soldiers and airmen to fight in Korea and to reinforce NATO during the Berlin crisis of 1961-1962. During the Vietnam war, almost 23,000 Army and Air Guardsmen were called up for a year of active duty; some 8,700 were deployed to Vietnam. Over 75,000 Army and Air Guardsmen were called upon to help bring a swift end to Desert Storm in 1991.

Uh huh, I didn't need the web because I am freinds with and relatives of a dozen or so VN vets. I would take their word over the WWW any day of the week, if you know what I mean.

The argument that re-activated veterans shouldn't complain because they're simply being held to their contracts doesn't hold water for a number of reasons:

1. Breach of contract. Once the Govt has breached an essential term of the contract, the contract is not binding on the soldier. This includes redeploying soldiers who are medically unfit for duty (PTSD amongst others), stop-loss orders, overseas deployment of the National Guard and extended tours of duty.

2. Vagueness of contract. Under the British common-law (from which both Australian and American contract law are sourced), a contractual term is unenforceable if it is too vague. A term such as "we'll bring you back when we feel like it" is unenforceable at law, even if the soldier agreed to it.

3. Imbalance of negotiating power. While most contract law is based on the idea that the two parties concerned are equal, some areas of law such as employment and consumer law recognise that there really is no level playing field between an individual and a multi-million-dollar corporation or a government.

The US Govt seems to be trying to have it both ways: the soldiers are bound by contract, but the Govt can change the rules whenever it likes. A soldier is responsible for the ethical choices they make (Abu Ghraib and Haditha) but one who uses that ethical responsibility to disobey an unlawful order is a deserter (Lt Watanda).

GR Marines forced out of Toledo

Unread postby Ferretlover » Sun 10 Feb 2008, 10:20:28

TOLEDO, OH -- Toledo's Mayor Carty Finkbeiner on Friday ordered some 200 members of Company A, 1st Battalion, 24th Marines from Grand Rapids out of the city just before the unit was suppose to start a weekend of urban warfare training in the downtown Toledo area.
The mayor's spokesperson Brian Schwartz said, "the mayor asked them to leave because they frighten people. He did not want them practicing and drilling in a highly visible area." …

Training in downtown Toledo?..for?

Toledo Muslims

Toledo Blade

For some reason, known only to them, there is an unusally large and visible muslim population in toledo.

If you take this into consideration, the whole thing makes much more sense. First, as a place for the militia to choose as a training spot, and an even better reason for the local authorities to throw them out.

A better written article might have pointed this out.

Jamie Farr

Oh please!

Anything Carty can do to get in front of the local or national media he will do, he is one of the biggest publicity hounds I have seen outside of Washington D.C.

This had nothing to do with the Muslim community, it was all Carty, all the time.

And don't forget Danny Thomas is also claimed by Toledo ;) It isn't just Jamie Farr. Oh yeah, and that chick that just married Tom Cruise!

Danny Thomas

Katie Holmes

Hey, you're right. Katie is/was catholic though.

As for this mayor, you occasionally find characters like this, who somehow manage to get into positions of authority.
