$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')obody remembers that the US Marines were the most stable, longterm government Haiti ever saw. They were in charge from 1915 to 1934. It was Woodrow Wilson, one of our all-time do-gooder presidents and a big backer of little nations, who sent them to Haiti. Things had just gotten a little too bloody for Woodie to tolerate.

This just a lie for Empire. I bet he says the same thing
about US and the Philippines.

To translate from the vulgar Clintonian dialect: 1) "political disputes" refers to the overwhelmingly popular presidency of Jean-Bertrand Aristide, which was "disputed" (and continually undermined) by the U.S. and its fifth column in Haiti; 2) Haiti "began to see progress" thanks to the U.S.-backed coup of Aristide in 2004; and 3) the 2006 elections that "really moved Haiti's democracy forward" excluded both Aristide and FL's preferred candidate in his stead (Father Gerard Jean-Juste, thrown in prison on invented charges by the U.S.-backed government in order to prevent him from running), resulting in the ascension of Rene Preval—who understands clearly who's the boss, and therefore merits a pat on the head from Clinton.

Which brings us to today's senatorial elections, in which the U.S./Haitian "strong commitment to democratic governance...will take another step forward" via the calculated suppression of the majority party's ability to run a slate of candidates...

So the centuries-long U.S. project of democracy prevention in Haiti is still going swimmingly.

If you read both articles, the gist isn't a pitch for more "American Empire" in Haiti. It's really just an historical survey of a brutal, but interesting place. I would guess the author's view here is that we're better off just accepting Haiti for what it is -- a very, very different culture in which brutally primitive violence is firmly entrenched. In the author's words, we cannot "make Haiti Ohio."

Rebellion is in the blood there.. if 20 years of US occupation couldn't fix the place, then what would it take? 40 years? A couple centuries?

Incidentally.. by making such a big commitment to Haiti, Obama runs the risk of "taking ownership" of this problem. Even before the earthquake, taking ownership of Haiti's problems would be a massive undertaking. This is going to get really messy.. most Americans don't understand how big and historical Haiti's problems are. Now that Obama has taken ownership, as things get worse this will turn into another Katrina and Obama will feel under pressure to escalate our involvement, just to save his reputation.

You see, if the US is "in charge," and then some horrific Dark Ages style stuff goes down in Haiti, then we get "the blame."

Even after the last 9 years of Marines in Fallujah and Khost you
still see them as benevolent.

Haiti was the Jewel of the French Empire. It can grow anything.

The only successful slave revolt in World History and Haiti has
been punished for it ever since.

Within six weeks of the occupation, representatives from the United States controlled Haitian customs houses and administrative institutions such as banks and the national treasury. Through American manipulation, 40% of the national income was used to alleviate the debt repayment to both American and French banks.[4]Despite the large sums due to overseas banks, this economic decision ignored the interests of the majority of the Haitian population and froze the economic growth the country needed. For the next nineteen years, advisors of the United States governed the country, enforced by the United States Marine Corps.

With the Sweet Baby Jesus riding shot gun.

We're gonna have to kill alot of folks this time. Note that we know nothing outside of the Airport.

It's popular to insist these days that such organizations-like the
Haiti's election overseers banned the Fanmi Lavalas slate - can't possibly muster the clout needed to overwhelm, say, the power of big corporations. History says otherwise. We're doing the exact same thing in Iraq:

Senatorial elections held this month by the government imposed on Haiti after the U.S.-backed coup of 2004 ... produced a turnout of less than 10 percent of eligible voters: a result that mocks any notion of a popular, legitimate democracy. But this is not because the Haitians are so lazy and disinterested that they couldn't be bothered to vote. Nor that they are so satisfied with the benevolent, paternal care of their American-appointed masters that they saw no need to let silly electoral contests trouble their bucolic life.

No, the 90 percent refusal rate was in fact a massive protest action, driven chiefly by the fact that the American-backed government would not allow the most popular party -- the party of the government ousted by the 2004 coup -- to run a slate of candidates in the election. By clerkly hook and bureaucratic crook, back in February. At that moment, the April elections became a dead letter, a meaningless farce -- yet another cruel joke played on the people of Haiti.

With heat and humidity (around 80F or so) the bodies are going to start rotting fast.

You got to wonder if a lot of people will flee the city to other areas of the country...

You would think so, and hope so. But after Katrina, people just stayed there -- for whatever reason, they didn't just start walking to the next county over where civilization could be found.

Haiti is a lot worse off than Louisiana, of course.. if they head out of Port-au-Prince, it's not like there's extra food available in the barren countryside. And, let's not forget these people are getting seriously dehydrated by now. The hungrier and thirstier you get, the less able you are to hike sixty miles to someplace else.

But from what I've read, some are trying to get out.. the Dominican Republic is turning them away at the border (though they are flying in injured to be treated at their hospitals). Ironically, the refugees clogging the road out to the DR are preventing relief supplies from getting in.

Drudge has this as a headline, but no link yet:
NO ESCAPE FROM HAITI; CITIZENS TOLD CAN'T LEAVE

That's really bad, if US citizens can't even get out.

Now we're starting to see the Katrina-like headlines:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]Frustration Growing After Slow Rescue, Relief Efforts

United Nations peacekeepers patrolling the capital said people's anger is rising that aid hasn't been distributed quickly, and the Brazilian military warned aid convoys to add security to guard against looting.

"Unfortunately, they're slowly getting more angry and impatient," said David Wimhurst, spokesman for the Brazilian-commanded U.N.

and

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]Angry Haitians set up roadblocks with corpses in Port-au-Prince to protest at the delay in emergency aid reaching them after a devastating earthquake, an eyewitness said.

Shaul Schwarz, a photographer for TIME magazine, said he saw at least two downtown roadblocks formed with bodies of earthquake victims and rocks.

"They are starting to block the roads with bodies, it's getting ugly out there, people are fed up with getting no help," he told Reuters.

Yep. And note all the 'tight shots' of TV Personalities.
They'll be gone now. Friday and all. Can't miss those
week ends. Read the Contract.

History of Haiti. Model for America's Colonies:

Under U.S. influence, Baby Doc virtually eliminated import tariffs for U.S. goods. Soon Haiti was awash predatory agricultural imports dumped by American firms. Domestic rice farmers went bankrupt. A nation that had been agriculturally self-sustaining collapsed. Farms were abandoned. Hundreds of thousands of farmers migrated to the teeming slums of Port-au-Prince.

The Duvalier era, 29 years in all, came to an end in 1986 when President Ronald Reagan ordered U.S. forces to whisk Baby Doc to exile in France, saving him from a popular uprising.

Once again, Haitians should thank Americans. Duvalierism was "tough love." Forcing Haitians to make do without their national treasury was our nice way or encouraging them to work harder, to lift themselves up by their bootstraps. Or, in this case, flipflops.
Anyway.

Unfortunately we haven't heard this cry from the WH.

Change we can believe in has been changed to:

Over 1 Million Fat Cats served.

And I wonder how that huge CitiBank Building is fairing.

Standing out like a sore thumb now in Port Au Prince.  8O 8)

The U.S. has been all about tough love ever since. We twice deposed the populist and popular democratically-elected president Jean-Bertrand Aristide. The second time, in 2004, we even gave him a free flight to the Central African Republic! (He says the CIA kidnapped him, but whatever.) Hey, he needed a rest. And it was kind of us to support a new government formed by former Tonton Macoutes.

Yet, despite everything we've done for Haiti, they're still a fourth-world failed state on a fault line.

And still, we haven't given up. American companies like Disney generously pay wages to their sweatshop workers of 28 cents an hour.

What more do these ingrates want?

Why has the Dominican Republic turned them away? Aren't they next-door neighbors? And if the Haitians are being turned away by their own neighbors, why is it EXPECTED that the US will rush in and save them?

And the thing that really gets my goat is this rallying cry- akin to what we heard after Katrina - demanding that help arrive FASTER.

I'm of the opinion that we should help with food and water and emergency medical need, but is there any reason we couldn't swap some of that free care for vasectomies and tubal ligations? In other words,"Yeah, here's some food. Now go over there to that second tent for your free vasectomy."

The poor people there in Haiti are reproducing at a rapid clip. If we're going to dump billions into the country, can't we do something to help them for the long-term?

Offer help that is both sensible and wise?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')hy has the Dominican Republic turned them away?

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Did_Haiti_ever_go_to_war_with_the_Dominican_Republic

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')o in the sense of the word. The Dominican Republic was invaded by Haitian troops on 1822, an invasion that lasted over 22 years, until national hero Juan Pablo Duarte united some local troops and decided to terminate with the Haitian's regimen.

Until this date, relantionship between Haitians and Dominicans are not to the best as most Dominicans believe that most Haitians still under that understanding that this part of the island should belong to them.

Old hatreds and racism, IMHO FWIW.

That, and maybe they can see what the Haitians have done to their side of the island and want no part of that.

Because they know you can't fix stupid. The haitians destroyed their side of the Island long ago.

Breaking News!

Obama to allow for accelerated Immigration from Haiti to Massachusetts. The goal is transport at least 5 million Haitians to Boston before next Tuesday. They will become legal citizens of the US during the trip and given absentee ballots upon arrival. Free health care will also be provided and employment in the Federal Government jobs said a local ACORN official.

Was watching CNN..

A food aid truck made it out to the city. So they're passing out these high-energy survival biscuits. Some people in the crowd notice the date (2008) and assume that's the expiration date (it's the package date). So anyway, one guy starts yelling that the biscuits are bad and not to eat them, and then everyone starts throwing the biscuits on the ground and stomping them.

The aid workers get overwhelmed by the crowd and decide to speed off, while hungry kids chase the truck and grab onto it.

Bizarre.. if you were hungry, would you worry about an expiration date?
