Come on, sport guys handle way too much money. They belong to the category "too rich to be affected by peak oil."

As well as the cost of oil and gas being more expensive they will start having a large number of self-interest groups who claim they ahve the rights to what is left. It will be a contest in itself to see who wins: the people in their motorized scooters or other dependent on gadgets for their life (including medications) or major league sports.

We find it interesting here in Canada that the US will cut money to arts, drama, or band and even some academic subjects in schools before they will cut a cent from the sports department. That really seems backward but I wonder how much of that will change when the million dollar contracts aren't there to be signed anymore.

hmmmm.... use the plastic for foot/baseball protective gear or I.V. tubing. tough choice. seriously, I mean it, that would be a tough choice for many. one could argue that some people will die off anyway, so why not let the rest of us enjoy our sports.

Yeah, visiting the worlds largest ball of twine just isn't as thrilling as it used to be.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('bruin', 'G')as could go to $10 gallon and there will be no change in professional sports. Fuel costs are the least of their concerns. They'll get around just fine with expensive fuel.

ok, so petrol is $10 a gallon, or about 4 times today's price.
So we are talking crude oil priced at about $200-$250 a barrel.

when we get to that level, i'd suggest the pro sports people are out of business for these reasons:

there will be roaring inflation and rocketing unemployment. joe public will be cutting back on non-essential spending. he may stop going to see the games live because the tickets are expensive. he may cut his cable and/or pay-per-view tv viewing because he can't afford it.

once a significant percentage of fans fall into this category, where does the money for pro sports come from?

sponsorship and free-to-air tv advertising?

maybe, but if the economy is taking a massive dive, this will dry up a lot too.

so yes, with the money these organisations have now, extra fuel costs mean almost nothing in direct terms, but indirectly it will strangle their ultimate source of income - ordinary fans.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('PhilBiker', 'S')o Riddick Sports should faile because you want it to? That's really insightful..... thanks.

If the amount of money that was spent on education was equal to the amount of money people spend on sports/gambling in this country, then we might actually have the brains to figure out a solution the the PO problem that we're currently in.

How's that for insightful?

sports cars after the oil peak

Unread postby corradoboy17 » Thu 14 Apr 2005, 23:07:09

This is my first post. I just became aware of Hubbert's Peak and i find it absolutely critical to completely change the way i live. No! just joshing!

But seriously, besides looking for alternative fuels, hybrid power, and full-on battery powered cars, what is the future for automotive companies? I'm especially intrested in carmakers who specialize in sports cars,ie; porsche, ferrari, bmw, and yes even chevy and ford. What kind of engine, besides an internal combustion engine, can produce wicked power and still be cheap to build?

Pretty cool - wood dashboard with leather steering, composite spoked wheels with ultra-low-profile tires, extra-firm suspension, automatic traction control, racing stripes, dual exhaust, lifetime warranty.

The bush-bars are a bit unusual for a sports car, though.

Corvette gets a rated 18/28 MPG. That aint bad for a 500 HP sports car. Hell, that 28 is actually very respectable.
Now, the Lamborghini gets like 8 MPG. That car, well, one WOULD say it wont last but lets be honest. If you can afford a quarter of a million dollar car, the gas prices arent going to be the reason you dont buy it.

here you go corradoboy17, here's something to dream about Post PO
TZero
they're also working on a Li-ion battery pack to extend its range by a factor of three

now than, just because there is an electric sports car doesn't mean they'll still be made post PO, anybody will be able to afford them, or there will even be roads to drive them on (remeber Asphalt is oil based)

I think you should probably start building an apperciation for Phil's Twin engine SUV. Maybe if you want something a little more sporty you can invest in an Equine version

2.5 liters per 100 km (280 miles per gallon) at 250 km/hr (155 miles/hr). And it even looks like a decent sportscar.

Here is a nice Fuel Consumption Conversion Calculator
2.5 litres/100 km. = 113 mpg UK = 94.1 mpg US = 8146 furlongs/firkin.

Predict the Future of Professional Sports!!

Unread postby Narz » Mon 07 Jul 2008, 00:56:08

No, not who's going to win this year's World Series but the future of profession sports (in the US or your home country) in general.

I'd say when profession sports organizations can no longer support themselves it's a good sign TSHHTF.
