$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Daniel_Plainview', 'T')his really, really pisses me off.

It's the frog in the boiling water situation.. it's gradual, we don't expect stuff to just shrink without notice, so we aren't aware of it.

A couple random examples:

Image

Reese's cups are smaller now:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')img]http://chiefio.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/dscf0545sadj-e1294006237547.jpg?w=500&h=37[/img]5

There's actually not many comparison pics on the web.. after all, who keeps old products to compare to new ones? But sizes are getting smaller and prices ARE going up:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]Like Hell There's No Inflation

As the saying goes, the CPI's a fine price measure--as long as you don't eat or drive.
No inflation?
Indeed.
Latest real prices:
· Post Raisin Bran goes from 2.50 to 3.00 per box at Walmart.
· My favorite yogurt goes from .50 to .58 each at Walmart.
· Cherry tomatoes go from 4.98 to 5.98 per package.
· Walnuts go from 9.98 to 13.98 per bag at Sam’s.
· Bottom round goes from 2.48 to 2.68 per pound at Sam’s.
Should I go on?
Your headline should read, “According to the US Government, there is no inflation.”
Your lead line should read: “The US Government, which has substantial amounts of debt tied to the CPI rate, and which is known to lie about this as well as numerous other factors affecting the public, has calculated the CPI without regard to what is really going on in the world.”

EDIT: oh, cereal boxes are smaller than they used to be. They're really thin now.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Daniel_Plainview', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'G')rocery stores have been reducing package sizes for a few years now -- you haven't noticed? That's stealth inflation. Now that game is mostly played out and they're starting to raise prices.

This really, really pisses me off.

It pisses me off too, but don't let your anger be misguided onto the ice cream makers of the world (as the government would like it to be). Raising prices makes customers angry, so companies get sneaky. But in the end it's not their fault, it's the money that is dying.

I wonder how much worse it will get? I do find it humorous that some people think things would be different had someone else been elected. If were all on food stamps, is that socialism or communism?

Neither. If we were whipped to work to get those food stamps that would be socialism, and if we chose to do hard labour on our own, and chose to be compensated exclusively with foodstamps that would be communism.

Great thread.

We have noticed the prices going up on everything, either through outright price increases, more cost per unit of food (ie smaller packages, same price), or both. I keep a detailed budget of food expenditures for the last 5 years and I have the figures to prove it.

Last year I managed to grow a decent amount of our fruit during the summer as well as 6 months of tomatoes (we use a quart a week) and some other stuff. Probably only amounted to 15% of what we ate, if that, but it's a start. My compost is still free and I save seeds.

I heard this week there's some intention of cutting 10-15% from WIC. I'm sure there's no other program that's more worthy for cutting than that  .
After fueling up their cars, Twyman says they bowed their heads and asked God for cheaper gas. There was no immediate answer, but he says other motorists joined in and the service station owner didn't run them off.

Food-stamp usage just skyrocketed past 44.1 million -- that's 14.3% of Americans

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'O')n Charles Ponzi Day We Celebrate Another All Time Record In Food Stamp Usage
Submitted by Tyler Durden on 03/03/2011 12:00 -0500

Bernanke's plan to recreate Libya in our own back yard is continuing to work magnificently. It is no surprise that on Charles Ponzi day, the update to food stamp usage indicates that in December those receiving an average of $134 per month has just hit 44.1 million people. These lucky people will soon be able to buy an inflation adjusted 2.3 crumbs of notional bread with this generous handout from the Chairsatan. In other words, America is now the land of the free, home of the brave, of whom 14.3% can't afford to eat, even with all the new jobs created by both the old QE1, Lite and 2, and soon to be 3. Don't forget that according to the Bernank, QE2 has already created 250,000 new jobs... all at the a modest cost of $1.3 million per job.

Thats about $4.50 per day for food. I bet there are a lot of hungry people out there at the end of the month.

The food stamp usuage number is one I've watched every month since the recession started. I think its also the most useful number to let me know that recovery, however you want to measure it, isn't really happening when it comes to a sizable growing part of the population.

You can tweak GDP with government spending and you can tweak employment rates with birth/death and seasonal adjustment models but when you see food stamp usuage going up every month, its pretty clear the US population is getting poorer as this recession drags on.

There is something very wrong out there in middle class land and it shows no sign of getting better.

That's 3-5-7 pounds of chicken if bought with a half of a brain. Or 8-10 pounds of chicken gizzards/offal. If that's not enough for you to last a day, then what is?

What would happen if the tens of millions of food stamp cards didn't get loaded up with cash on the first of next month? On the last day of the month millions of pantries are bare, which is why supermarkets are so doggone busy on the first of each month these days. What would 43 million poor hungry people do to refill their kitchens if their cards were no longer valid?

Or even more interesting, two years from now when it's 60 or 70 million people ... how would they find food? 8O

And those things are all cheaper than fresh produce.

Try eating healthy for a week, a variety of fresh fruits and veg every day, variety of grains and healthy good quality everything and get back to us with the grocery bill. I doubt it could be done on a food stamp budget.

Yes, I often dump $400 in Whole foods and have an empty fridge in a few days. That DOES NOT mean that 10-15 pounds of chicken offal is not enough to last 1 day. Even if you think you a tiger, or a lion.
