Funny that you guys mentioned this I have two fine home brews in the beer fridge right now ready to go.

What you need to get is some old Cornelius 5 gallon pop kegs, they cost all of 5 bucks on ebay. Nothing like just turning on the tap for your own fine homebrew. Also in stead of two cases of bottles to sanitize you have one 5 gallon keg to clean.

I have an IPA on tap that is better than most in the store, a lot of the time people take IPAs way over the top with the hops which make it hard to drink more than one. This one I made is very nice with plenty of hops but it is easy to drink.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('ReverseEngineer', 'T')o my horror, for the second week in a row my favorite Cheap Beer, Milwaulkee's Best (the cheap Miller product), was not available by the case. ...

As only a slight tongue in cheek comment (as my tongue is occupied with a can of a similar cheap beer) I'd offer:

Booze is an important OTC self-medication. It's production ranks right up their with some of the oldest professions.

My Booze-O-Meter is way low, but then again I'm not as far from the Quick-Sak as you and I have a few jugs of homemade wine in the storeroom.

HHHmmm... Sin Taxes--what will be next?
Outrage brewing over proposed 1,900% beer tax hike $this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')i]Lawmakers say tax will help budget; brewers warn of lost jobs By ERIC ADAMS, kgw.com Staff, Fri, 13 Feb 2009:
PORTLAND, Ore. -- Five Oregon state lawmakers want to impose a hefty tax on beer and have introduced a bill that brewers say would cripple them.
Four Portland legislators joined a Springfield senator to introduce Oregon House Bill 2461, which would impose a $49.61 tax on each barrel of beer produced by Oregon brewers.
The tax would raise revenue for the state at a time when budgets are running in the red. Specifically, the bill says it would fund prevention, treatment and recovery programs for those addicted to alcohol and other substances. …

Thanks for reviving my favourite topic.

I've been using recycled fizzy pop bottles and they are great for several reasons.

1. Cost - 0 -

Kegs and crown caps are expensive and even if you save Grolsch style ones they are fairly limited. (buting them they cost a fortune).

2. They stand up to pressure very well.

I've never had one pop (yet)! FLW

3. They indicate when beer/cider is conditioned.

When you initally bottle the bottle can be squeezed and after a while in a warm place they go rock hard indicating the pressure build up. This allows you to move bottles round so they get to correct temperature.

Only downside is sanitising them, you can't use dry heat/solar stove. I always just wash them out with clean water and haven't had any problems yet.

I'm a relative newcomer, but used to brew a few years ago. In the last 4/5 months I've made about 300 bottles of wine and about 240 pints of beer. I've only drunk about half of them (hic)! :)

I just started making my own beer in the past few weeks. One of my roommates that I picked up and myself have been making it. We have about 25 gallons in various stages of production and fermentation. It is taking us about 4-5 weeks to fully mature one batch, so we start two 5-gallon batches every two weeks.

We are actually going to order about a half-dozen different types of hops rhizomes this March and plant them in the front yard and let them grow up a rigging that we will build.

I have to say, making your own beer seems to be a terrific activity. It takes a few hours to sterilize the equipment, boil/prepare the ingredients and then set it up to ferment. It takes another couple of hours to add bottling sugar and bottle it. It isn't very complex at all, and if you make sure to keep everything sterile, it is actually hard to make a mistake that ruins the whole batch.

The taste of home made beer is very very good, in my opinion. It just tastes a bit differently, like it's more organic and fresh. It isn't pasteurized and it's fresh, which in my best guess is why it tastes so good. There is a pretty huge homebrewing community here in Austin so we have a lot of choices and locations for buying equipment and ingredients.

And very nearly recylable.

I pour all the left-over sludge from the wort and blow-off refuse on the compost pile. It is very rich in organic material so I'm sure it's terrific nutrients for the plants.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('ReverseEngineer', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Quinny', 'B')rew your own its cheaper and better!
I hit my own Peak beer this week - Peak prices that is.
Been in Southern Ireland working - 5.50 euros a pint.
Couldn't afford to get drunk!

Ouch. That would be about $7/pint, currently if you go out to one of our Micro Breweries here its still at about $4.50/pint. Which is why I rarely go out for the good stuff, but still better than 5.50 Euros. A case of El Cheapo however I get for $16-18.

We do have a Micro-brewerie in town, so the community should survive :-) I wonder how many Salmon Fillets I will have to fork over for a Pint? Do you think I could buy Beer Futures now at the Brewerie and lock in a god price? I want to go long on Beer.

The homebrews I'm making are stored in 22-ounce Guinness bottles. They cost about US$1.00 to US$1.40 to make, depending on which kit we use. In the store, pasteurized Guinness in those bottles would cost US$3.00, so we are saving quite a bit of money, obviously.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('I_Like_Plants', 'A')ctually the average beer in the US is 3.2 percent alcohol.

My initial homebrews have been around 6-7% alcohol. They are quite potent.

The peakoil.com community is the best. You all are such mensches. My old ex-father-in-law Irish singer artist brewed his own and stunk up the house. I liked that old fella. He sang Ave Maria at my wedding in a towering voice. He's gone now to that great brewery in the sky and drinks beer with Jesus. He took me out to the firing range and let me shoot his M1 garand rifle. Man, talk about recoil!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Shannymara', 'H')e gets his supplies in bulk now that he's got some experience. It's cheaper than the kits.

That is something we've looked at. I understand you can order the barley, malt and hops in 10 pound bags and do it all from complete scratch. I think to do that, we would need a slightly different set up as ours is optimized for used with a small 3-pound bag of grain and then top off the rest of the requirements with extract syrup. I think to do it completely from scratch, we may need to boil and prepare up to 10 pounds of grain, which is a lot to put into a 5-gallon stock pot. But I will get there eventually. :) It's fun stuff and it tastes great.

I have embarked on the Final Solution for the Peak Beer & Cigarettes problem.

I am now on Day 9 "On the Wagon". If you have noticed any difference in my Prose, it might be attributable to different fuel burning. Completely Tobacco and Alcohol Free living at the moment.

My best results riding the Wagon over the years has been about the 6 week mark. If I can make it by that, I might be able to kick it for good.

I'll miss the really tasty beers, but I drank plenty in the last 50 years (well for 35 of them anyhow) and being encumbered by these habits isn't helpful on a health basis for me, so I'm trying to clean up the machine here. I want to make it to 2012 to see Yellowstone and Toba blow. I got a bottle of Glenlivet in reserve to go out with though :-)

I made it for three years once, and many times for 6 months. It's harder to leave the tobacco behind than the alcohol. But sure enough, a smoke needs a beer. Good luck RE. I have a brother who abstained from alcohol for almost 30 years. He told me he is off the wagon.

I don't think I'll ever quit drinking alcohol even though it would be beneficial in many ways. I grew up drinking beer in bars in Germany at age 16. My mind fires and works very quickly, sometimes too fast. I'll think of a half-dozen things before I have had a chance to say one sentence, so I wind up interrupting myself sometimes. I was diagnosed with ADD as a kid, but I just think too fast and have too little patience many times. The only thing that will regulate my system and synchronize the speed of my thoughts down to my physical abilities is alcohol or lots of exercise.

Unread postby Plantagenet » Wed 20 May 2009, 15:04:25

Just weeks after Obama the dems instituted a new tax on cigarettes and other kinds of tobacco a new bill in the Congress will place higher taxes on beer and other alcohol drinks

Dems move beer tax bill in Congress

Obama promised not to raise any taxes on people earning less then $250,000 a year but this isn't a tax on people....its a tax on what people drink!

Yep, I liked him. Very rough around the edges but he had a truly 'good' character that refused to compromise his ideals. He had seen the worst in people and it disgusted him.

Who gives a f*** about taxes.

The End Of The World as We Know It is nearly upon us, there's nothing we can do about it, and when the Shit Hits The Fan and corpses are rotting in the Olduvai Gorge, taxes are going to be the least of anyone's worries.

Right?

This is PeakOil.com, after all. Or do you think that Peak Oil will be a smaller problem to deal with than tax rates?
