Lorenzo, I'm Scandinavian background and a doctor told my mother that I was likely naturally immune to small pox. He told her that since I was vaccinated 3 times and had no reaction to the vaccine , this is what he concluded. Wonder if it would be the same for aids? Not like I'm going to rush out to find out.

Immune is the wrong word.

Resistant to certain clades is more appropriate. If you shoot up blood from an AIDS patient with a high viral load, especially the wrong clade, you're going to live a lot shorter than you normally would, resistance or no.

Please read the article in Nature. The CCR5 mutant, named CCR5-delta32 makes it impossible for the immune system to become infected with the HIV-virus.

But isn't that mutation make the T-cells immune to all retroviruses?

That's the least of my worries! You don't die from herpes. And there's the pill for anticonception. But if it is true that 10% of all Europeans are immune to HIV, I want to find out at once whether I'm one of the lucky ones.

This would take such a heavy weight off an entire generations' back. We have suffered so hard under the idea that "sex can be lethal". Pre-AIDS generations may have had their worries about herpes and ghonorrea, but the threat of HIV infection is something totally different and a gazillion times more depressing. It has basically ruined the sexual lives of an entire generation of people.
Delta32 may finally bring some relief to some.

1. That's not a very realistic option for normal young people, who want to have sex before marriage, and enjoy it as much as they can.
2. And even if I were married, I would still want to know if I'm "delta32" and if my wife is too (because both parents must be "delta32" to have kids that are immune to HIV).

No. It only gums one receptor for retroviral infiltration, and there are several others, CD4 the most notable.

Considering the rate at which AIDS mutates I wouldnt put much faith in 10% being immune.
Give it 3 years, the current strain will have mutated enough those 10% are no longer immune.

I appreciate what you're saying, although what the stats really show is that 90% of all Europeans are possible HIV/AIDS carriers. Your individual chances at 10% are pretty small, sorry.

For the lucky people, sure. But I thought the sexual revolution was more philosophic than simply a matter of safety. I don't see "free love" philosophies coming back just because of this. The Delta32 community might start looking like a giant swingers club but I doubt it.

Huh? Pretty small? They're one in ten!! Millions of people play at the lottery each day, where chances are 1 in ten million. If I have a one in ten chance of being immune to HIV, I'd want to find out.
If I'm not, then so be it, everything stays the same, but at least then I know.

It was, before HIV came around. In pre-AIDS times, people could talk about a sexual revolution and enjoy it. Unfortunately, my generation hasn't had that luxury and is living in the age of fake terror wars and HIV.

Thats not how it works. People with the ccr5 receptor mutation have a slightly lower chance of contracting a few clades of HIV. If a vaccine was introduced that gave everyone protection on the ccr5 receptor, it would have the effect of vaccinating the population through the slow attrition of infections. This does not grant the individual immunity. You still have the CXCR4 receptor wide open on just HIV-1, along with CCR3 and CCR8 for other clades. Its fairly plausible that other chemokine receptors are open to other strains of HIV: link and link
Its more like playing russian roulette with 3 barrels loaded instead of 5.

RIYADH, (KUNA) -- By the end of 2004, the number of persons infected by the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in Saudi Arabia has reached 8,919 cases, which is a 10 percent increase, said Thursday a Saudi official.

In a statement to Al-Iqtisadiyah newspaper, Saudi Arabia Health Ministry's Spokesperson Dr. Khaled Merghalani said 22.4 percent of the cases are Saudis in which 646 of them have passed away, while 6,915 of the cases were expatriates.

In the Middle-East, he explained, the number of cases has reached 1.5 million by the end of 2004, adding that the main reason for the infection is sexually related.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are about 40 million AIDS cases broken down into 17.6 million cases for women, three million cases for children and 37 million cases for individuals over 15 years of age.

This is not exactly oil related but I was facinated when stumbled across this article today. Apperently 1 in 300 HIV infected never degrade in health +10 years after infection. I guess that includes Magic Johnson. link
