$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'H')ave you not been paying attention to the "dollar crash" thread? Allow me to refer you to Obama's "Mark Iwry" paper.
That's just one of many proposals floating around right now. At any given time, there are countless similar proposals bouncing around the wonk community. $this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'D')on't worry about Wall Street. They'll get their commission.
How will Wall Street make as much money on selling treasuries as they currently make selling mutual funds and ETFs? I don't see it.$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'D')o you honestly blindly trust the government to keep their hands off your 401k?
Of course not. I trust the government to do exactly what is in its own best interest. And this will not be in the government's best interest once the phones in every Member of Congress's office starts blowing up. We've already done this once when Bush wanted to privatize Social Security. The American people went apeshit, flooded Members of Congress with calls and letters and the matter was dropped. I predict that same will happen this time around. $this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'O')h, and by the way, with my savings in bullion, i slept like a baby during 2008.
That's good. Maybe someone will propose requiring that a PM option be provided in 401(k) plans. It would be great to have a 401(k) option similar to the custodial gold IRA.

As I noted in my post, I have a different take on this topic because this is the field I work in (retirement plan design and compliance consulting). The story the media is telling is simply way off the mark. I think it is entirely possible that an optional 401(k) plan investment in some type of government bond instrument may be coming, but that's a whole different matter from converting everyone's retirement savings to government debt. That's just my view on it, though.

Everyone will see this story through the filter of his/her own beliefs.

Class Warfare's Next Target: 401(k) Savings

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'Y')ou did the responsible thing. You saved in your IRA or 401(k) to support your retirement, when you could have spent that money on another vacation, or an upscale car, or fancier clothes and jewelry. But now Washington is developing plans for your retirement savings.

BusinessWeek reports that the Treasury and Labor departments are asking for public comment on "the conversion of 401(k) savings and Individual Retirement Accounts into annuities or other steady payment streams."

In plain English, the idea is for the government to take your retirement savings in return for a promise to pay you some monthly benefit in your retirement years.

They will tell you that you are "investing" your money in U.S. Treasury bonds. But they will use your money immediately to pay for their unprecedented trillion-dollar budget deficits, leaving nothing to back up their political promises, just as they have raided the Social Security trust funds.

I love this quote in the comments below:
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '&')quot;America is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system, but too early to shoot the bastards."
An ideology is by definition not a search for TRUTH-but a search for PROOF that its point of view is right

Equals barter and negotiate-people with power just take

You cant defend freedom by eliminating it-unknown

Our elected reps should wear sponsor patches on their suits so we know who they represent-like Nascar-Roy

Unions Want to Take Over Your 401(k)

Unread postby mattduke » Mon 29 Mar 2010, 21:24:45

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'O')ne of the nation's largest labor unions, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), is promoting a plan that will centralize all retirement plans for American workers, including private 401(k) plans, under one new "retirement system" for the United States.

In effect, government pensions for everyone, not unlike the European system and regardless of personal choice.

The SEIU, which was integral to the election of Barack Obama as president, is working with the left-leaning Economic Policy Institute (EPI), and the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, on SEIU's plan, called "the Retirement USA Initiative."

Claiming that the retirement system in place now has "failed most Americans," EPI vice president Ross Eisenbrey, told a labor union publication that "account balances have fallen by a third since late 2007, leaving many older workers unable to retire just as our economy is shedding millions of jobs.”

You don't contribute to "retirement accounts" do you?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he Department of Labor and the Department of the Treasury
(the ``Agencies'') are currently reviewing the rules under the Employee
Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) and the plan qualification rules
under the Internal Revenue Code (Code) to determine whether, and, if
so, how, the Agencies could or should enhance, by regulation or
otherwise, the retirement security of participants in employer-
sponsored retirement plans and in individual retirement arrangements
(IRAs) by facilitating access to, and use of, lifetime income or other
arrangements designed to provide a lifetime stream of income after
retirement.

Like they did during the German inflation, "investment" in government bonds will be mandatory.
