Terminology

Unread postby BabyPeanut » Tue 11 Oct 2005, 11:34:54

The term "Global Warming" appears to me to be more "complete" that the term "Peak Oil" does.

"Global Warming" sums it all up. "Peak Oil" is missing some words I think. A complete term would be "Peak Oil Production Rates".

Just plain "Peak Oil" is majorly confusing because it looks superficially like the world is running out of oil. It's not about running out of oil. That is totally the wrong thing. It's about using up the fossil fuels that can be processed rapidly enough to meet growing demands. Once the limit of production rates are hit then growth is strangled. Once growth is strangled then the writings of Carl Marx about the demise of capitalism become true. The problem is that today's loans are underwritten by tomorrow's growth. Once it becomes evident that there will be no more growth it's all over--the fat lady starts to sing.

Yeah, but see, "global warming" doesn't really cut it either, because you'll get some goofball pointing out some areas of the world are getting colder and use that to prove "look! there's no global warming!" So it's inadequate as well. "Global climate change" maybe....

Don't know about the "peak oil" terminology problem...I think people are just going to keep misunderstanding the issue no matter what....

I dunno-
PO sorta fits that short, snappy, zippy lexicon that Mediaticians love these days...
Energy crisis, I suppose...
because this change will affect all forms of energy that we use.
But really, it's like the endless debate about when peak actually hits...does it really matter?
As long as everybody understands that there is not the endless ocean of the stuff...and that there is not as of yet, and not in the forseeable future, a viable replacement.
(I just love the poor dears who exclaim "technology!...new technology will drive our cars!")
Well...no. Technology just comprises the delivery system that any given fuel source uses to make wheels go around.

At any rate - Global warming is only one aspect of the many different factors resulting from over-use of fossil fuels.
Joe Six-Pack is still going to be far more fussed over the price at the pump, than the average daily temperature.
It will be interesting to see what happens throughout the cold states and provinces in N. America next May when everybody gets out their calculators to tote up the season's heating bill.
A few more billions removed from the economy.

Whatever grabs the short hairs and opens up the peepers nice and big and wide and round...(like a bullet through the wallet)

You know, I blame Fred Hoyle for this sort of thing. Although he disagreed with the theory, he did more for Big Bang theory than any one else by coining the catchy media title. Now every scientific theory has to have a brand name befre it can be sold to the public. There is a great segment on Monkey Dust, about the marketing company called Labia...anyway I digress.

Energy Crisis or Energy Crunch. No wait, that's a cereal bar. Maybe Energy Scare followed by Energy Panic.
It's all downhill from here

I like to refer to it as a "growth crisis"
