$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('JJ', 't')hats if the armed men have removed you from your safe little homestead. How many minutes would it take to end years of preps? (not that anything is assured)

Well that's just it isn't it. As Aaron says beware your fellow humans reaction to peak oil.

In reply to Allen's question about whether I've got a garden/food preps. We (family home) have a small garden and grow some food plants. I have also signed up for an allotment with the local council. But I've seriously worried about what happens when shtf. I mean there has already been a recent uptick in thefts from allotments what with the rising food prices. We aren't legally able to carry guns in this country and if a group of yobs came along in the night...as a women I have dark thoughts as to the possible outcomes. I feel like a would want to go somewhere where there are no other humans, like an uninhabited island or something.

Maybe if I were able to get into a post peak community then there would be some security.

Even if you're well armed so will "they" be. And if you have food you won't be as hunger motivated as they are. Armed groups of hungry people will kill you & take your food. Preparations are useless.

"To educate sheeple or not educate sheeple...that is the question?"
Well, getting back on topic and to answer your question.....No!
The eighteenth-century English poet Thomas Gray wrote: “Where ignorance is bliss, / ‘Tis folly to be wise.’”
So if the doomers are correct, and it is too late to power down, too late to plan and dieoff is inevitable...........why panic the masses?
N'est-ce pas?

Allenwrench: People have to want to listen to learn, just like children in school.
I do not think people want to learn, that's all. Like Mrobert said, people think easy solutions, like bomb arabs, Alaska has millions of yrs of oil. How do you explain it to them????
My mom looks at me like I have 3 heads when I mentioned it, like most people she says "the oil companies will get more." WTF

I am a newcomer here, but I read as much of the info posted here I can. I worked in the supply boat industry GOM until 2000, but never really researched PeakOil. I take what I learned to help me first and if people want to listen, good for them.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Munqi', 'I')ve tried talking about this with my family and friends but so far no one has really been interested. They listen, they say they agree, but it just really doesnt sink in. For some reason they just dont understand that the world could possibly change. So i would say try to educate people, but if they dont listen then move on.

I agree Munqi. I have had the exact same experience. They are just rooted to the earth- so to speak. Incapable of connecting the dots! I am having some genuine grief for all the souls that are gonna experience alot of hardship and, to them, untimely death. And it irks me that there is really almost nothing I can do to lessen their pain... :( I already have my hands full

TOO LATE?? You bring up an excellent point. I would agree about not panicking the sheeple if it is in fact TOO LATE.
If so, when was the cutoff? I learned bout PO in 10/07 and have been rushing to catch up with preps. Do the rest of you think it is TOO LATE to get to work?

What about the members here that have done nothing in the area of preps? Are they wasting their time here? Should we even be taking in new members?

Sheeple don't listen? We can see that right here.
We have 24,015 members. Yet our 'planning for the future' section may reflect only 2% to 3% of our membership on a regular basis. What are the other 23,925 members doing in terms of planning and prepping? They got it all figured out and perfected? And this is with PO devotees to boot!

But it is like that on many forums I've been on. Someday, something may click and they can shift gears. But a person convinced against their will is of the same opinion still. So it has to come from within them and not force fed.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('allenwrench', 'D')o the rest of you think it is TOO LATE to get to work?
I don't. However, (i) whatever amount of work to be done is only increasing with each day, (ii) I'm not giggly or bullish on a techno-fix --I'm bullish on massive powerdowns--, and (iii) it will take more than just high gasoline prices for the masses to get to work.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('allenwrench', 'W')e have 24,015 members.
We would have 100 times that if it wasn't for the condescending and arrogant treatment the pros, mods, elites and experts give the newbies. Ie, "you have a lot to learn", "hey, random internet guy", etc.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('allenwrench', 'W')hat are the other 23,925 members doing in terms of planning and prepping? They got it all figured out and perfected?
They/we haven't. We spend most of time bitching about each other. Sure, we save a few cans of beans, recycle our plastics and drive less, but in essence, that's about it. Oh, some are building fortresses, bunkers, and compounds; they'll be the only survivors. Good for them!
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('allenwrench', 'S')o it has to come from within them and not force fed.
Sure force fed will most probably not work, but to give up or wait for it to come from within is just equally immoral.

Don't know if 100X is true. But you are correct with the 'tudes. We all have a personality and have to do the best we can with the various personalities in the world. Sometime we type things we would not say in person. just good to think sometime how our words affect others.

I think I would be comfortable saying in person most of what I write here.

I also think that most of the mods here do a pretty good job of being helpful to new people.

Anytime someone thinks a mod is not being fair or respectful to a new person (or a veteran), I encourage them to send the mod a PM and let them know.
