What's on your mind?
General interest discussions, not necessarily related to depletion.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')ow, that gets the prize for stupid question of the week.

They are not "US cars". They are European cars, made by US owned companies.

Then this surely must list among the stupidest answers. The Ford Ka is partly manufactured in Brazil, while the Matiz is made in Korea. Both of which are not exactly European countries :-D

The answer of Pfilferage makes more sense. Here the taxes are based on weight not on displacement, but it works out more or less the same.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'G')ego is right, cars are not the solution. More energy-efficient cars are not going to fix the massive energy required to make them, obesity due to a sedentary lifestyle, gridlock, sprawl, etc.

The solution: Make cars so small that obese people don't fit in them.

No but seriously, Gego is right in saying that cars (even small cars ones) are not the solution. But they can help to facilitate the transition to a new mode of transport. By switching to smaller cars and cutting back on unnecessary driving we could reduce our gasoline consumption by more that 50%. This could buy is valuable time to work on alternatives.

We have to reduce our gasoline consumption as soon as possible and I believe that small cars can be of help. They are IMO a more sensible option than hybrids and electical cars at this moment.

I think our addiction to gasoline is the most dangerous aspect of our oil addiction. Last year the heating oil stocks in the US as well as in Northern Europe dropped to critical lows because the refineries had problems with the gasoline demand. They gave priority to producing gasoline. Apparently they are more afraid of people having to stand in line at the pump than people freezing to death in their homes.
