To sum up the thesis of Laing and Esterton: "To be deemed sane in an unsane world can hardly be seen as a definition of sanity."
The controversy of these doctor's work is complex, but they base a lot of their ideas on the supposition that we all start out thinking the world must be sane and if we don't fit in, it must be ourselves with the problem, not the world we live in.
In much the same way that child abuse victims ordinarily blame themselves for the abuse; we seek to justify those around us first, ourselves last.
This theory does not do much for people with serious inderlying genetic or chemical disturbance in the brain; but it goes someway to helping those whose problem is fundamentally psychosocial in nature.
The education system is geared to make 'good worker ants' of all of us. This works OK if you have that predisposition; terribly if you don't.

Even those of us with genetic brain problems can do better or worse depending on our environment. For instance, I am on very little medication now, and have thanks to my physician, always been on low doses. I'm able to do this and be reasonably able to function largely because of my way of life. I'm self-employed, so usually on my own schedule. Not pushed into a lot of social interaction because of working at home with my husband. We live in the country so the environment is very quiet, peaceful, and low-stress in general. If I were trying to live a "normal" life and have a "real job" I probably would not be able to function. Back in Los Angeles I ended up quitting job after job as I just got worse and worse. The work environment was very stressful with lots of noise, generally not very good communication, tight deadlines, etc. I had to quit my career as an employee and start my own business. My sister also worked in a very stressful career, as a research biologist in the field of genetics, and she eventually had to quit and go on disability. I'm not on disability.

Most people aren't able to set things up like I have, I feel extremely fortunate.

A low-stress, supportive environment is so important in my opinion, and something which is probably rare in our modern lives.

I wouldn't be too hard on yourself.

Capitalism is much, much bigger than anyone of us can individually resolve. We will have to bide our time until those around us are forced to recognise that all's not well. In the meantime, be good to yourself and appreciate the fact that you have the courage to look through and acknowledge folly, despite the propaganda, a mixed blessing though it is at times.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('threadbear', 'A')ll who need words of wisdom, encouragement and who are currently mentally and or emotionally ill, or know someone who is, please log on here. I'll out myself first. I come from a family that is on the schizophrenia spectrum. Though never psychotic, I was beset with severe anxiety, depression until my mid twenties and still have a daily struggle with being just plain weird.

Let's spread some hope and discuss govt sanctioned dope, on this thread...shall we?

So a big HI and how are you.... to all of you, who are currently horribly anxious, depressed, or actively hallucinating. Please join in. No problem too intractable, no situation too silly, no solution overlooked. This is pep talk central!
