Reduce your need to earn money

Postby Ayoob » Thu 01 Apr 2010, 06:09:06

I think this is the logical extension of localizing government. Get off the treadmill, do what you want to have done for you. Take control of your own life. Buy your land, build your house, love your woman, raise your kids. Grow your food, raise your food, take control of your food.

Do what you want. Take what you can. Build what you want to have and break that with which you object.

Kill or be killed. Build or be damned. Exist!

This is my last post on this site.

Goodbye.

What about those of us who enjoy motor sports? While the idea of buying a producing oilfield to supply me with fuel for hobbies is an interesting concept, I think I'll stick to allowing others to specialize in supplying certain items.......and Whoppers....I like Whoppers too...

I think there is some real conflicting information here. You probably need to stay on the treadmill to afford the land and house. At least that has been my experience to some extent. I'm my own treadmill (self-employed). I earned a pile, bought the land, had the house built, and have since reduced my need to earn by moving to said land and house. But there is still a lot to do, much of which seems to require money. So I am trying to find new income streams...

My husband enjoys motorsports, but he also enjoys the land, the house, and the food I grow. :)

Good luck Ayoob.

Hopefully, in two years time, I'll be ready to get off the treadmill for good as well. I'll be ready to spend my time at home with my family, grow our food, experiment with permaculture and no longer be a slave to the system.

Didnt you say that your employer flies you in twice a week and pays you a ridiculously high salary, so you can post here on peakoil.com? If so, that is not a likely event, or at the very least not a hopefull one.

I'm glad this thread was started. My dad is someone who's made $15 an hour for many years in the past. He's now retired but lives in a beautiful house and has plenty of money for a really nice Lexus and a nice motorcycle. He just knows how to save. Saving was impressed upon me my entire life and I still can't do it. I'm too embarrassed to express my $ problems to my dad. He's always lived within his means. He basically eats bagels (day old of-course) and the cheap meat at the grocery store.

I was making more money when I was 19 than he had ever made and I still can't live within my means being 31 now. If my dad went through my bills and noticed how much I eat out and drink he'd go psycho and probably strangle me... Some people are just really good at saving, I envy those who are good with money but expressing $ problems to someone who's good with $ is nearly impossible. It's a complete paradigm shift but asking for help only gets you completely berated and put down, it might be disserved but it doesn't solve the problem I think it makes it worse.

Saving is a matter of discipline. Some people have a lot of personal discipline, others don't. Spending money is like eating - some people have trouble not over-eating, some people have trouble not over-spending. Both these problems can be solved, but you'd probably need to get someone to help you, because you can't magically generate personal discipline if you don't have it, it has to be learned by practice. What you say about thrifty people berating the non-thrifty, that's just being mean. The word "mean" connotes not only an unpleasant demeanor but also the habits of a tight-wad. Maybe a lot of thrifty people are unpleasant, I don't know. I hope not all of them are.

Thing is, you could be a really disciplined saver and it could disappear overnight. :(

I commute in a car every weekend (a total of ten hours per weekend). In my previous job I was jetting about everywhere, but this one just happens to be far from the doomstead. Yes, I earn pretty good money. That's what is helping me to get my house in order for when I finish the contract in two years time.

I intend selling stuff at a local market or two, but may concentrate on value-added stuff like selling roast chicken at local events. The house is paid for, and any local taxes are dependent on income, so we won't have much to pay.

I also intend eventually going off-grid (or at least selling energy to the grid in the short term - this should also help liquidity).

You all don't have property tax based on the value of your property?

It would be interesting to know the level of the property tax in different countries.

The property tax in Norway is reasonably low. I pay some NOK 3,000 That is about $500 a year for a normal house. And about half of the households don't pay any property tax at all. The other taxes is mainly paid via 25% valu added tax and a reasonably high income tax of about 20 to 35% for normal salaries. The income tax is very progressive meaning high income earners pay substantly higher percentage in income tax than low income earners. There is no income tax for the first NOK 65,000 or $11,000.

Yes, but you get a reduction based on your previous year's earnings. When we declared no earnings we paid about 10% of the tax.

Our property taxes here in Texas are based on the use of the land as well as the market value of the improvements. If you use your land for agriculture, the tax is based on the potential income you might earn from the endeavor. I don't know how it's actually figured but it is extremely low. Our taxes were basically cut in half when we got agricultural tax status. They're now about $1400, mostly for the house and outbuildings. I don't have the tax breakdown right in front of me. Our total improvements are valued at about $100,000 (1500 sq ft house, 192 sq ft workshop, various outbuildings). The tax is mostly school tax, which is quite high here. We have to pay for our high school football program, after all! [smilie=icon_cheers.gif] County tax is pretty low, as we don't get much in the way of services.

In a post-peak world don't you anticipate local, state, and federal govts in desperate need of cash?

California is again talking about repealing Prop 13 which would raise property taxes on hundreds of thousands if not millions of residents.

As things worsen, govts will try to squeeze money out of everyone throught raising income taxes, sales taxes, property taxes, etc....

I am definitely budgeting for increased taxes in the future.

How would they manage to repeal it? By fiat? I thought they had to go through the initiative process or something. I can't see Californians agreeing to having their property taxes raised.

It's a possibility. But the French ruling classes are a little bit loathe to get too draconian, as the populace has a history of getting pissed off when they do.
