Almost five here as well, and my first post ever was a reply to a post by Cyrus.

Coincidence? Well, yeah, probably. :)

Heh, back then members who yacked up a storm received as classification "I Post too much!" Beats "Intermediate Sweet Crude." Pops had joined April 3 and on June 6 added his 1194th post...yikes.

So, did the "giant oil sea" off the Falklands ever pan out? (were they talking about the big finds off Brazil maybe?)

On top of all these nuclear reactors that are always just years away, the electric cars, blah this, blah that...the rich control everything... we aren't getting shit. Invest in shoes and gloves and get ready to bend over :)!

Wow, that wayback machine is really something.. you can actually browse the forum the way it was in '04.

For example, here's a post from April '04:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I')n his letter Warren Buffet has called the derivative market a financial weapon of mass destruction which is about to blow. He especially mentioned Fannie and Freddie which are the biggest players in that field.

Only a few months ago Greenspan warned that the sheer size of Fannie and Freddie posed great danger to the financial stability of the US. He also reiterated that the government would not bail them out in case of problems.

Those problems appear to have arrived today. An investigation has been opened on Fannie Mae.

Pretty fascinating from an historical perspective.. my understanding was that Greenspan never saw this coming, nor Buffet. (by the way I know there are archives on peakoi.com, but it's kind of neat to browse the past the way it looked then)

According to the Wayback Machine, some posters have been PO aware since the mid-1990's. I wonder which forum member can claim to be the first PO-aware member (i.e., aware of the full ramifications of peak oil, collapse, dieoff, etc.), and under what circumstances they gained that knowledge.

Daniel-

When i was a young boy i use to wonder what would happen when the oil runs out... Therefore i win. I know an organic farmer that wears women's panties (i'm dead serious).

Ho, Frank, what decade were you a little boy?
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Alfred Tennyson', 'W')e are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Daniel,

January of '74. That's when it dawned on me oil was finite and that society would fall apart when supply crested.

But then we had the free wheeling 80's and 90's and it seemed like The Good Stuff would never run out so I only occasionally thought about this. At a dollar a gallon it was easy to forget about what was coming.

Then by '03 it became obvious that the peak was soon to be upon us. And it was. Now all that we're waiting for is 'the falling apart, part.'

I bought a Jeavons book thanks to you and got really good results last year, to the consternation of my farming neighbours. Thanks! [smilie=adora.gif]
