We could certainly easily see a recession or depression even on a worldwide scale for many reasons. However, with decade’s worth of readily available oil while in transition to a new era of cheap bio-energy amongst all the other solutions we already have? Do you know how fast the price of oil is going to plummet as these new technologies come online?
Think of the trillions that are currently, and going to be made on new technology replacing antiquated oil. This world is about building, mans most very basic nature is about building and problem solving both of which are generally known as grand profit centers. As the price of antiquated oil goes up, cheaper things will replace it just like they are right now. Profit will always be king and the new era has no shortage of profits to be made.
Some pretend to have it all figured out on many fronts be it those that are happy to tell US how they have an alleged god from the past all figured out while others are happy to tell US how wrong they are and will show US how they have that god all figured out in a much different way. Look at Jimmy Swaggert against Billy Graham for instance. They both have their own limited take on something they really know nothing about when it comes right down to it. They just think they know something and get many to follow their notions. That should tell you something right there.
A long list of economists run around telling US George Bush’s tax cuts will ruin everything while a long list of others will tell US just the opposite.
Peak Oil has its share of those on both sides of the fence also and the first thing you should ask yourself is do the doomers really have it all figured out? Do they really know anything about the BiGG picture or are they just preaching hellfire & brimstone like Jimmy Swaggert does because they truly have very limited knowledge of what they are talking about? Do they really know anything about all of the new & violable cheap technologies I and others have listed right here or are they just fixated on the past?
The answers are right before your eyes and the doomers aren’t the only ones preaching the gospel on energy, it just depends on what church you are affiliated with. If you are looking for your own answer, make sure you look at those with plans of building instead of just those who plan on crawling into an existing cave, as those doing the building can show you much immensity the cave doesn’t offer.

I for one believe that the world in general is in for some very tough times ahead. I'm hoping not to have to deal with the "Doomer" scenario, but I am not ruling it out. Nor do I rule out the possibility of some mitigating technologies, though I am increasingly skeptical there. I am simply trying to cover as many bases as I think practical without driving myself insane thinking about it, with mixed results I'll admit. Our culture is going to have to manage a significant transition, one way or another. It is a sustainability issue. If minds aren't changed in this context, it will just be a matter of time before we are facing another limiting factor that will change our minds for us.
I tilled my first real garden this spring. I took up hunting a few years ago. I have a survival pack that I am stocking, just in case of the "got to get out the door in 5 minutes, what do you do?" scenario. I research. I follow politics. (The trends I see tend to scare the hell out of me). Whilst I go about waiting for the world to end I also have taken up learning the acoustic guitar and continue to follow some of my other hobbies when I can squeeze them in. Being out in the wilderness, ie the Adirondack Mountains of Central New York, does wonders for replenishing me. I do appreciate the chances for an escape from the real world, or should I say escapes TO the real world perhaps.

You go on the assumption that we have decades worth of readily available cheap oil. I am not comfortable putting all my eggs in that basket. I'd sure hate to be wrong on that one and not had ANY contingency plans. Doesn't seem particularly prudent to me. My plans allow for me to have chances of success, even if I am wrong about a number of things while still trying to live my life more in tune with what I consider to be moral anyway. Hypothetically, I'd hate to base all of my plans on "we've got decades of oil left, just to find out next year how way the hell off base I was with that one. Little late then.

i haven't put all my eggs in one basket so to speak either but i need a steady income from a steady job to start with and thats what i am working on right now. as for the doomer outlook, the chances of it happening outside someone in a state of power purposefully is so low that you would have a better chance of winning the lottery or getting struck by lightning.
Religion is excellent stuff for keeping the common people quiet.

Oh come on Airline! The FIRST question? Not "OMG YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING HASN'T THIS BE CLAIMED FOR A CENTURY OR MORE AND NEVER BEEN TRUE!!!" Obviously that question might only be obvious to thinking folk who know some history, but still!

I did not think the Olduvai Cliff scenario was really that plausible in this day and age, now I am pretty much convinced of it.
Turns out the permanent blackouts in America circa 2008 or so as predicted by Duncan were no more real than the MZBs and other peak oil old wives tale sold to the rubes. I'm glad you tuned down your religious fervor a slack jawed stupid idea though, wouldn't want airline pilots to be known as rubes even around here.
