FWIW

.5 miles - 2min by bike, 10 min walking

spouse 2 miles, 7 min drive?

child a school - .25 mile
child b school - 1 mile

About a tank and a half every month. 30USD?, maybe 40.

The best part about walking is how you get to feel all smug and superior. I pretend to be sympathetic while my Triton V-10 pickup truck driving coworkers tell thier woeful tales of high gas prices, but all the while I'm thinking "Cry me a river, car-slaves"
I also enjoy hearing them whine about the lack of parking places.

Several years ago, when I lived in the greater LA area, one of my commutes was only 22 miles (freeway) but would take anywhere from 45 minutes (three occasions) to over 2 hours (~ 10 occasions). And, I couldn't predict how long it would take. The usual time was about 1 hr 15 min +20 min -15 min. My longest commute was 76 miles.

More recently in Idaho my commute was ~30 miles, and taking the old highway route would take ~ 45 minutes. My Ford Escort Wagon typically got 39 to 42 Miles / gal with this rout. The freeway I got only ~30 mpg.

Now I am only 1.25 miles away and I take my bike when I dont have to carry too much stuff, and the weather is good.

currently i commute zero miles per day. i work just a few hours a week from the comfort of my own home and am making more than when i used to work in the city 40hrs a week plus 10 hrs commute, which is nice :) i still do drive about 40 miles a week for grocery shopping though, we tend to buy bits and bobs every day rather than a big load every week, we pay ~$6.14 usd per gallon for regular gas here in UK.
