Couple of news stories

Unread postby Leanan » Fri 29 Apr 2005, 09:53:20

From MSNBC:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7670771/

The number of commuters living more than an hour from their workplaces is skyrocketing. Their long drives are made even worse by traffic congestion.

From USA Today:

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/200 ... uddy_x.htm

The record drought in the northern plains states is having repercussions all the way down the Missouri River, impacting recreation, transportation, hydroelectric dams, fishing, farming, ranching, nuclear power plants, drinking water, etc.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')hipping has long been a sore point. States upriver, dependent on tourism, complain that federal managers release too much reservoir water for barge traffic. States in the lower basin, where the Missouri is a channelized ditch adapted to commercial traffic, claim the feds hold back too much in the lakes, threatening river transport of goods. Farmers fear if barge traffic is cut off, railroads and trucking companies will charge higher rates and cripple agriculture.

The water wars could get ugly out west...

How about a quasi poll... How far is your commute and how long does it take?

53 miles one way and about 50 minutes
(virtually all highway with little traffic)

ouch ....

I'm two miles from my office, and walk when the weather's nice. It's 10-15 minutes to drive, depending on traffic. You get a nice break on your car insurance when your commute is that short. :-D

5 miles each way by my reasonably survivable bicycle route. 40 minutes to work (uphill-ish) 25 minutes to get home (downhill-ish)

3.5 miles each way by foot/bus. walk 2.5 miles, bus 1 mile. Takes about an hour each way. But it costs me nothing (work gives out free bus passes) and eliminates the time and expense of engaging in some pointless wheel spinning exercise routine.

I figured I had the longest commute in my company until I started asking around.

Seems there are quite a few people with 60+ mile commute each way.
Super ouch ... 8O

The norm seems to be between 15 and 25 miles each way.

I'm gathering info on potential car pooling.

I fly on average 4 trips a month, and have to drive 28 miles one way to work. That means about 1.3 gallons each way. 2.6 a trip and total rounded up about 11 gallons a month. My car holds 14.5 gallons so I should be able to do this even when the price gets really bad. I guess thats as long as I have a job! I have several good bikes at home plus an electric golf cart for short trips to the grocery store which is only about 2 miles away.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Leanan', 'n')uclear power plants,

No way, nuke is the wave of the future! No problems with nukes!

I commute about 100 feet, on foot. But certainly not every day! That would be too much work...

Commute time: 15 minutes. Ten minute walk, 5 minute ride on the city's heavy rail system. It would be around a 15 to 20 minute bike ride if i wanted to go that route, or about 10 minutes to ride my scooter.

Having several different ways to work is where its at! :)

That picture of the river of gridlocked traffic in the Atlanta area
made me sick. It's insane. Atlanta has a nice climate, but I don't
see any other reason anyone would want to live there. Skirted
the greater Atlanta area once, and the traffic was beyond belief.
And people wonder why asthma rates have skyrocketed. Hmmm.
Could it be from constantly inhaling combustion byproducts?

Nah....

And the other link on the drought out West was just plain depressing.
Read an article recently that Atlanta may soon be facing water
problems. Apparently due to geology they have little groundwater and
must get most of their water from a local river, which will soon
be tapped out...

17.5 miles each way - 35 miles per day.

takes me about 45 minutes on average each way.

car gets 35mpg, so i burn a gallon of petrol per day which costs about £3.95 or $7.50.

only 4 months left in current job though, then its probably unemployment and benefits for me.

In my last job i had to commute 2 hours and 20 mins each way all by railway but it was over 100 miles or 160 km

i only had to put it the overcrowed train for about 3 months then i left that job and went back to study closer to home

by the way due to sustained high oil prices my train is very full now and iam not impressed with Peak Oil as a few time i cannot get on the 1st train that comes. there has been a doubling of the numbers on the train all for 30 cents a liter

I only walk 10 mins to go to my job  ! And it is a gentle walk..not a fast one..slow enough to enjoy the sound of the pigeons (by the way, just watched a couple of pigeons yesterday at my door step..enough to provide meat for one week right outside of my appartment *drooling* ) and to enjoy the smell of fresh bread  !

The downside of the job is..much of our materials come directly from China  ..

Used to commute 3 hours a day with my wife. It was only 45 miles each way, but traffic was a killer.

Did this for 4 years.

After totaling a brand new Honda Civic when a concrete truck lost a load right in front of my car, my wife and I moved closer to work.

We were vey lucky to walk away from the wreck; shaken but unharmed.

We now commute a total of 20 miles a day without any traffic.

I drive 50 miles one way to work, about 1 hr. 15 mins.

That's why I bought an old Geo Metro that gets 42 MPG.

20 minutes by transit system. 20 minutes rollerblading when the roads are dry.

Yeah, problems we have. Lately ground level ozone is better (mainly due to lower temperatures) but particulate matter is still nice and high. Its mostly a cultural thing here: people still believe that more road construction=less congestion. There is also an ingrained hatred for all things transit that is taking a long time to get over...Gov Perdue refuses to fund both MARTA and the state DOT commuter rail and intercity rail programs...both of which are key to the future of Atlanta and Georgia as a whole.
As far as the water situation goes, i view it as a blessing. Florida and Alabama also rely on the Chattahoochee river, and if the courts decide to limit our usage of water then they in effect are limiting our capacity for growth and construction....which i think would be just what the doctor ordered in Atlanta's case. Anything to destroy demand for housing in outlying greenfields
