Reader's Digest down

Unread postby eXpat » Mon 17 Aug 2009, 20:19:28

Well, well, seems to be that there are good things actually with this recession
Reader's Digest plans prearranged bankruptcy
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')EW YORK (Reuters) - Reader's Digest Association Inc, whose namesake magazine has been a staple of dentists' offices for generations, said on Monday it planned to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for its U.S. businesses as part of a prearranged plan with lenders to cut debt by 75 percent.

The media company, known worldwide for its family magazine filled with general-interest and inspirational stories, has been trying to cut costs since it was bought in 2007 by an investor group led by Ripplewood Holdings LLC.

The bankruptcy would take the form of a prearranged filing, which comes after a company has already reached deals with lenders to reduce debt. The deal, if approved by a bankruptcy court, would allow Reader's Digest to slash its debt load to $550 million, from the current $2.2 billion.

I also grew up with the Reader`s Digest in New Zealand as my mother was and still is a devoted subscriber. I always read it cover to cover, but as I got older I started to find it too conservative for me. I notice that this year they decided to abandon the hope of appealing to a large mainstream and head more conservative in order to survive amongst dwindling subscriptions.

I spent a period in prison and readers digest the magazine and their condensed books helped fill many a day

INT. READING ROOM - NIGHT

CANDLES BURN. Tyler and Jack are seated across from each
other on the buckled floor, reading MAGAZINES. Rain DRIPS
from the ceiling. No furniture. THOUSANDS of MAGAZINES.

JACK (V.O.)
The previous occupant had been a bit
of a shut-in.

TYLER
(of magazine)
Hum.

JACK
What?

TYLER
Oh, a new riot control grenade...
(reading)
"...the successful combination of
concussive, 3000 foot-candle flash-
blasts and simultaneous high-velocity
disbursement of...blah, blah, blah..."

Tyler begins RIPPING the ARTICLE from his magazine.

JACK
("Reader's Digest")
"I am Joe's Lungs." It's written in
first person. "Without me, Joe could
not take in oxygen to feed his red
blood cells." There's a whole
series -- "I am Joe's Prostate."

TYLER
"I get cancer, and I kill Joe."

Tyler tosses his article in a pile of other articles,
chooses another magazine.

JACK
What are you reading?

TYLER
Soldier of Fortune. Business Week.
New Republic.

JACK
Show-off.

--------------------------- (later)-------------

JACK
We need to talk.

BOSS
Okay. Where to begin? With your
constant absenteeism? With your
unpresentable appearance? You're up
for review...

JACK
I Am Jack's Complete Lack of Surprise.

Boss sits up in his seat, becoming enraged.

JACK
Let's pretend. You're the Department
of Transportation, and you discover
that our company intentionally did
nothing about leather seats cured in
third world countries with chemicals
we know cause birth defects? Brake
linings that fail after a thousand
miles. Fuel injectors that burn
people alive.

BOSS
Just who do you think you
are?! Get out! You're fired!

JACK
What about this? Keep me on payroll
as an outside consultant. In
exchange for my salary, I'll keep my
mouth shut. I won't need to come to
the office. I can do this job from
home.

aka : 'Readers Disqust' a right wing rag spewing the corporate line for the masses that didn't care to research for themselves. The source of many of Ronald Reagan's views of the world-need I say more? With any luck maybe it will fold!

Let's see when they'll stop sending me those lucky draw "You Can Win a Car!" contest forms.

Actually I wrote in and asked them to stop and they very graciously did, for a few years, and recently they "partnered" with a local bank, which added me right back on to their mailing lists.

Think I'll write back in again and ask them to "UNSUBSCRIBE" me.

I never understood the point of Readers Digest. Mostly hokey short stories right? If you're going to read short stories, get a book of them from a good author don't subscribe to a grab bag of who knows what.

I guess it was for folks who wanted something to read but couldn't decide on their own.
