200 turbine engines are supposed to make a difference? Remember those satellite images showing Katrina taking up the whole Gulf of Mexico? 200 freaking barges? Come on. This is like the idea to just blow up the hurricane with a nuclear bomb, it's trivial compared to the size and force of a hurricane.

Also, has anyone thought through the business model? Revenue sources, who is going to pay for this? (probably the stupid f'ing government, they'll do anything as long as it doesn't make any sense). Success factors, how do you even measure success? If there are no major hurricanes like the last couple of years you claim it's working? If there is a major hurricane you claim it would have been much worse without this?

This is idiotic.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('jbrovont', 'W')arm water is denser than cool water, thus the pumping to exchange them will expend energy. In order to exchange enough water to alter surface temperatures enough to remove the energy that drives a hurricane, you'd have to expend roughly the same amount of energy to overcome the difference in buoyancy...unless the atmospheric conditions were cool enough you didn't need to...in which case they wouldn't support a hurricane anyway.

How much oil would we have to burn to equal the energy released during Katrina anyway? Or is the idea to deploy nuclear powered ships to an explosive hot zone for treacherous seas?

Fault me if I'm wrong here, please. Otherwise this seems like a contender for a complete waste of time. Why not just stop building where hurricanes are apt to make landfall? Seems like that would be a lot cheaper.

If you build ocean based stirling engines which actually take advantage of the temperature differential between surface and deep water, you actually generate energy. In fact, enough of these things would reduce the temperature differential AND generate power simultaneously. No additional power source needed.

The problem I have with this idea is ecological. A lot of organisms require a balance of light, salinity and temparature. Disturb this and you have a die-off of microorganisms with unpredictable consequences.

Right yeah - I do have that backwards - sorry I was pretty tired :)
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Tanada', 'A')ctually you have that backwards, cold water is denser that is why it sinks to the bottom and stays there on its own. --snip-- A few tens of thousands of those all driven by waves and you will create a cold patch on the surface without using artificial energy to do so.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'M')icrosoft founder, Bill Gates, has turned his attention and deep pockets to controlling hurricanes with a new invention.

Do we really want the man responsible for Windows '95, '98 Millennium Edition Vista, and all those other atrocities messing with our weather?

That could give new meaning to the term "Blue screen of death".

note: I use Mac OS X and live in a country that doesn't have had any serious hurricanes...

At least he will have some competition until he buys it out and has a congressional hearing over his climate control monopoly swept under the rug with breaking headlines about Paris Hiltons broken toenail?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'P')opular Science also noted that a private company, Dyn-O-Mat, plans to purchase jets to drop thousands of pounds of a water absorbing chemical powder (unknown substance), into hurricanes to absorb moisture that may dissipate hurricanes. There is no agriculture oversight or public hearings to determine the consequences of this and other actions or to monitor or prevent adverse impacts of this chemical once it falls on the surface of the ocean or on land.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('The Article', 'T')he patents describe a system that would place as many as 200 turbine engine barges in a path of a raging hurricane, and designed to then pump chilled water from its depth to the ocean’s surface negating the hurricane’s source of strength. The Vessels could be towed, dropped by planes or submerged in the ocean until needed.

OK, 200 barges are going to stop this? LOL!!!

As stated in article >> Our leaders need "the courage to practice long-term thinking, and to make bold, courageous, anticipatory decisions at a time when problems have become perceptible but before they reach crisis proportions."

Yea like that will ever happen..

Bill Gates will guide us to a new nuclear future

Postby Plantagenet » Mon 28 Feb 2011, 14:31:56

BIll Gates, founder of Microsoft, now heads up a company designing small nuclear power plants that Bill Gates says will solves our energy problems.
Bill Gate's new nuclear power plants run on nuclear waste

One of the big knocks on nuclear power is that they produce high level radioactive waste. BIll Gate's new design runs on high level nuclear waste. You would no longer have to store dangerous nuclear waste---you would use it as fuel.

Fuel these little puppies up nuclear waste, bury them underground, seal them in with concrete with only two wires coming up out of the ground, hook it up, and power your factory/home/hospital/university/whatever. For a hundred years. No maintainance needed. No bugs. No problems.

Bill Gates has a proven record of success. He is bringing us our new nuclear future---if we want to win the energy future we would be wise to listen to Bill Gates and his ideas.

Also, there are numerous patents being filed outside of the USA on these 'cold fussion' TYPES of energy systems. Once they are put into production (note the production part), otherwise they are just hype. BUT, then yeah, if this happens oil will be a non-issue. Oh, I know peakers have a hard time with this, but maybe, just maybe it will happen within 10 years time.

Great! Now how do you make fertiliser and plastic with this stuff, and what does it take in money (another QE?) and fossil fuel to rebuild the world's energy infrastructure so that it can use this instead of oil and NG?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('mos6507', 'Y')ay! We're saved! I knew "they would think of something.".... doom is no more?

Not so fast, my excitable friend.

We may be developing the technological ability to produce small, modern nuclear reactors that don't produce nuclear waste, but it doesn't mean our political "leaders" understand the peak oil problem and are willing to back nuclear power for the US to deal with peak oil.

The chances of getting Obama and the dems to agree to a large-scale nuclear power program for the US, peak oil or not, is about zero. If Obama gets booted out in two more years there might be a chance of doing this in the US, but otherwise its not very likely. Notice that Bill Gates himself says he is looking at a foreign country willing to build his modern reactor......

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('hcholm', 'G')reat! Now how do you make fertiliser and plastic with this stuff,

If the nuclear electrical energy is cheap enough, you can synthesize oil, hydrocarbons, plastics, etc. from coal or other sources of chemicals.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('hcholm', 'w')hat does it take in money (another QE?)

Of course it wouldn't be cheap. Thats another reason why it was so stupid for Obama to waste a trillion dollars bailing out the banksters, freddie and fannie, GM, Chrysler, mortgage speculators, etc. etc. We could've used that money to start to rebuild our infrastructure. If Obama hadn't been such a dope and hadn't put all his efforts into propping up BAU, we might already be moving away from the dying oil-based economy.
