I read an article about how americans had a low opinion of congress but a high opinion of their local congresscritter.

How to explain that? Americans were smart people 200 years ago but have become Homer Simps? I can't put all the blame on Faux News.


Because their Congressmen are responsible for getting some of the taxpayer's money back to the locals so it can be wasted on needless earmarked projects that create jobs (and dependency on gov & Fed money)

Why should a golfer be getting a free medal from Congress?

I mean, I like Mr. Palmer but I don't think taxpayer money should be redirected to him.

On the macro level it doesn't matter ($30,000 is a rounding error in the Congressional printer ink budget) but I can fully understand Congressman Paul's decision to vote against this kind of government waste.

How do they pick and choose? I mean, how did golf get chosen over some other activity? Are there lobbyists for awards-bestowing for certain industries? :roll:

I think we should give a $30,000 medal to Frank Frazetta for outstanding contributions to the profession of illustration. I mean, he's pretty good, right? He's already rich, but hey, why not?

I want ron paul as president as much as the next guy.. but congress would block his every move. He would never get anything done. It would make a lame duck presidency look all "accomplishing and stuff"

He probably doesn't want to "get anything done" in the conventional sense. Ron Paul would do at least two things that were within his power.

1) He would bring all the troops home from all over the world.
2) He would veto any and every bill unless it repealed a law

I don't think the congress could do much to stop 1). If they wanted to get any bill passed it would have to be agreed upon by a veto-proof majority. Regardless of the make-up of congress, I believe they would reach those majorities. It would be interesting.

When last I read the papers, Iran was just about the only vaguely-functioning democracy in the region. (Iraq & Afghanistan don't count IMHO).

They need our (i.e Western) help, support & constructive input at this difficult monent, not crowing over their mis-fortunes. Iran is a far more progressive State than KSA, for one example ( there are plenty of others).

I really hope things work out for Iran - they are a remarkable people & may yet surprise us all. (At least I hope so.)

when they privatised their oil fields in the 50's we had to over throw their democratic government to install some puppets

Turkey is probably the least dysfunctional muslim country.

I also think the constant fellating of the Iranian people, the references to their rich history, etc... is a little, how shall I say it, overcompensating? No people deserves to be raised up to Godhood like that, especially one that is funding hezbollah, holocaust denial conventions, and likely to touch off WWIII to get the grand Imam's attention. It's transparent for the "hey man, don't call me racist" mindgame that it is.

Iran is about as democratic as a high school, and their elections are about as important as the elections for class president. The real power in the high school is the Principal, and in Iran the real power is the Supreme Leader.

Iran's government will fall, but not this year and only because Iran will be reduced to a charred wasteland after the great powers implement a "Last Man Standing" strategy to deal with Peak Oil.
