Liberty Dollar Founder Arrested

Nobody who has done business with him filed a complaint. Like the Mafia, the Fed's don't like competition.

So what's the premise behind that? They issue currency which is tied by a specified relationship to an amount of PMs they store somewhere?

Or maybe just put the metal into the coin itself.

I thought the feds put them out of business a couple of years ago? I know there was a big hubbub between them and the feds.

To answer my own question, they were raided in November 2007 and several TONS!! of PM's were seized. link

Apparently they went back at it.

Yeah these guys have got it wrong. The certificates should state: "will redeem to the bearer on demand 1 oz of silver" and never use the word "dollar" or the symbol "$". Plus they are overpriced. Still, the counterfeit argument is bunk, as the whole purpose of this is to not be US dollars. goldmoney.com is a much better implementation.

Well if you're gonna get arrested, I suppose it may as well be for violating Article I, Section 8, Clause 5 of the US Constitution!

I had a look at that website, and the guy telling his story sounds almost happy about it. Bizarre.. if the dude doesn't settle with the government, he will end up doing time.

And I'm sure it never helped matters that their Liberty Dollar *does* appear to confuse people into thinking it's US currency. Still, it isn't counterfeit per se, it is silver. I wonder how a jury will come down on this? Probably on the side of the government, since that's what federal juries tend to do.

EDIT: they sound like an interesting bunch. According to Wikipedia the founder, Bernard Von NotHaus, "retired from Liberty Dollar in October 2008, to found the Free Marijuana Church in Hawaii."

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Sixstrings', 'W')ell if you're gonna get arrested, I suppose it may as well be for violating Article I, Section 8, Clause 5 of the US Constitution!

The Constitution exists to restrict government, not people. Allowing the government to produce money (which was a mistake) does not imply that citizens may not.

Huh.. you know, you *should* be right. But I assume there must be a Supreme Court ruling somewhere on the books that interprets it a different way. I read a bit of the indictment, and it cites Article I, Section 8, Clause 5 near the top.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter what your or me thinks the Constitution says. The Constitution means whatever the federal judges and justices say it does.

Wasn't it somewhere in the law that only the government could issue currency?

The Federal Reserve violates that clause of the constitution each and every day; if the courts were unbiased and fair, the FED would be on trial right with him.

So long as the FED illegally prints our currency, this guy is a hero for standing up to that.

So everyone should just come up with their own currency? That's not realistic.

Not only is it realistic, it has always worked quite well in the past. A free market money system is the only one that is not doomed to failure. I'm curious why you think only politicians should be allowed to manufacture money. Is it because only they can be trusted to make money of good quality? The free market has generally chosen gold as the universal medium of exchange.

We tried something like that during the articles of confederation, which was a libertarian's wet dream. The result was failure, and a replacement with what we have today.
