Is there an expiration date on the can? I'm sure that there is and I'm wondering how much time they alot between the cannign date and the expiration date.

As a doom prep some of those would go a long way if they have a good shelf life. Can you imagine how good a chicken every week or two would taste if all you'd been having was breads and veggies?

The farthest I'll go down this path of canned meat is canned tuna, salmon and canned chicken pieces.

That looks disgusting, but I guess if it keeps you alive when you need it, then so be it.

I wonder how the canned bread tastes?

I know that there are some parts of the world where refrigeration/freezing is not commonly available, so buying something like a whole chicken in a can might make more sense (i.e., for regular daily use, not for prepping for emergencies).

Check out "Red Feather Canned Butter," for instance. There's apparently a decent market for canned butter in parts of the world where reliable electricity/refrigeration are hard to come by. It's only relatively recently that Red Feather canned butter has become available in the US, I believe.

The whole chicken thing seems fine. I think it'd be a lot cheaper to find a sale on chicken thighs and can your own though.

there are still today places on the navajo reservation where there is still no electricity. just last week one portion received it and story about 85 year old grandmother excited to use the refrigeratot her children had bought her. our stores in this area have many canned meats, including canned chicken and it all leaves the shelves quickly , especially on the weekends when people come to town. it is all relative.

The pink color of the chicken looks great to me. I think that it's ok to eat, of course, after cooking. The gelatinous stuff one WANTS in Chicken, as it contains natural ingredients that are used in making valuable "bone broths". The chickens I have roasted, and put away, (in the fridge) naturally form gelatinous stuff. Why all the "ewwwww"..it's SUPPOSED to look that way.

Of course, I don't know if the bird's been shot up with lots of saline solution, etc. to preserve the color of the meat, etc. Fresh is always best, but if you can't "do" fresh, why should a well done canned chicken be unacceptable? It cooks up just like the rest of them!
