$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'I') own one of these since 1999 (y2k). That and a bag of wheat are still sitting on shelf in the basement. The Dinty Moore and Spam are long gone. (yum)

I wonder if it looks the same?

If you haven't guessed, then I'll come out and say yes, I'm trying to be funny with this post.

BUT.. somebody is really buying this stuff. This is sold on Amazon in packs of 6 for 49.99. Without counting shipping, that works out to $8.33 per chicken -- $2 more than a fresh chicken at Walmart. So obviously, whoever is buying these canned chickens it must be for prep purposes.

According to Amazon, the frequently "purchased with" item is B&M canned bread:

(bread comes in a can???)

Here's the Amazon link by the way, in case anyone wants to stock up on these bad boys:

Oh, and don't forget to take the suggestion on the label and save that delicious gelatinous broth!

Is there an expiration date on the can? I'm sure that there is and I'm wondering how much time they alot between the cannign date and the expiration date.

As a doom prep some of those would go a long way if they have a good shelf life. Can you imagine how good a chicken every week or two would taste if all you'd been having was breads and veggies?

Well looks like what I meant as a joke is being taken seriously. I guess that yes, in starvation mode this would be more appetizing.

As for expiration date.. if it's like any other canned good, then that's what three years or so? All I know is you're good to go with canned stuff unless you can pop the top in and out (which means seal has broken and air has gotten inside).

The farthest I'll go down this path of canned meat is canned tuna, salmon and canned chicken pieces.

That looks disgusting, but I guess if it keeps you alive when you need it, then so be it.

Methinks you overestimate the 'Murkan consumer by assuming their actions are driven by rationality...

I wonder how the canned bread tastes?

I know that there are some parts of the world where refrigeration/freezing is not commonly available, so buying something like a whole chicken in a can might make more sense (i.e., for regular daily use, not for prepping for emergencies).

Check out "Red Feather Canned Butter," for instance. There's apparently a decent market for canned butter in parts of the world where reliable electricity/refrigeration are hard to come by. It's only relatively recently that Red Feather canned butter has become available in the US, I believe.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', '
')I am dying to open my chicken now. But I will wait for the endtimes.

Do those particular cans actually have a use-by date?

The whole chicken thing seems fine. I think it'd be a lot cheaper to find a sale on chicken thighs and can your own though.

You could be right SPG, I"m just wondering if you MIGHT get a longer shelf-life with commercial canning versus home canning. Of course, it could be just the opposite.

Home canned stuff lasts a long time. I've never had anything spoil from sitting around to long. You want to store it in the dark cause the light will break down the vitamins over time, but stuff lasts for years and years. Commercial canned products are pretty much the same with one caveat. You have to watch out for rust on metal cans.

there are still today places on the navajo reservation where there is still no electricity. just last week one portion received it and story about 85 year old grandmother excited to use the refrigeratot her children had bought her. our stores in this area have many canned meats, including canned chicken and it all leaves the shelves quickly , especially on the weekends when people come to town. it is all relative.

The pink color of the chicken looks great to me. I think that it's ok to eat, of course, after cooking. The gelatinous stuff one WANTS in Chicken, as it contains natural ingredients that are used in making valuable "bone broths". The chickens I have roasted, and put away, (in the fridge) naturally form gelatinous stuff. Why all the "ewwwww"..it's SUPPOSED to look that way.

Of course, I don't know if the bird's been shot up with lots of saline solution, etc. to preserve the color of the meat, etc. Fresh is always best, but if you can't "do" fresh, why should a well done canned chicken be unacceptable? It cooks up just like the rest of them!

Who'd love to be able to have backyard birds in the City of Chicago (we DO allow for it!)..but I am too busy at the garden centers...sigh...

Do you live there, close to the NM/AZ border? I've been through the Navajo reservation many times (maybe 15 times from Texas?) and wanted to stop and say hello and hang out, but I wasn't sure how to do it or where to go. It's very spread out with small homesteads everywhere.

One of my best friends in the entire world is 3/4 Navajo. I've learned more from him than any other person in the world.

Welcome to PO.com, belatedly. Please post more. I personally think the Navajo are the wisest people I've ever met (although I'm sure there are many wise people around :) ).
