This is insane. GM should have been allowed to go under without taxpayer
money. All of the bailouts are a corrupt scam to aid the wealthy. (also UAW for votes) When is it going to end?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Keith_McClary', 'W')hat I can't figure out is why GM common shares are worth anything - since they have defaulted on their secured creditors and accepted taxpayer bailouts. Aren't the common stock shareholders the owners of the business and hence the "last in line" to recover any assets?

That's correct, after the bankruptcy the common shares will be worth 0.

It's trading on pure speculation by gamblers . The shares are trading similar to out-of-the-money call options. The idea being that if bankruptcy were somehow averted the stock price would soar, so your $1 share might become $5 or $10.

A long shot though, everyone pretty much expects chapter 11. The stock dropped under a buck today.

No. Cabrone's link cited incorrect information. Lehman's bankruptcy is the biggest ever in the U.S. in terms of dollars. GM's is the biggest by a manufacturer.

Edit: spelling of Cabrone

Dollar Getting Hammered As GM Files Bankruptcy

The dollar is getting another spanking. For some reason the fools don't like Obama's Economic Spending Program. I mean he is pumping 14Trillion Dollars into the economy. Don't they see he has lots of Dollars. Tings is Good. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=aldZmyp0SNN4&refer=home

Thank you for the bad news and who is to blame.
I will keep you in mind whenever I encounter bad
news and I thank you for setting my lying eyes
straight and knocking the notion from my mind
that millions of people behaved like idiots and
loved every minute of it while their government,
bribed by corporate plunderers, destroyed
their own nation from within for quick profits
and personal fame.

Ill tell you, the only people who see a improvement are the people on wallstreet. This will not be a U shaped economy like they said. Where going negative GDP for years. The market rallies on a GM bankrurtcy? China is rallying this market, what a shame, the us is so sold out. I see gold going sky high within a few years and the dollar tanking. A half a million layed off is good news to wallstreet? They just shrug this off. I got layed of Dec.1 2007, with no sign of landing a job here in Michigan. I saw this all coming so I didn't get burned financially, except that I lost my job due to NAFTA. Trying my best to make something happen, but wages are going down , not up. It just doesn't look positive to me.

The US had 1.8 trillion in debt coming to maturity in 2009 needing to be rolled over. It was on the horizon before Obama took office.

Because the Bush Administration colluded with Wall Street in the fleecing of America, they emptied the coffers before leaving office.

Not only did they fleece America, they fleeced the entire world.(There is a very good reason the rest of the world blames the US.)

Left with no choice but to try to borrow the money from nations who have also been fleeced and are now pissed at the US, we find ourselves in this predicament.

The rest of the world is coming to the realization of what happened and are now trying to cover their own anguses..

When a Ponzi scheme is exposed, the end comes very quickly.

This was a runaway train long before Obama took office.

"Ol' Charley stole the handle,
And the train, it won't stop going,
No way to slow down."

Cid,

Playing the blame game is lame. Yes Bush and everyone else prior to him pushed up the deficits. I dont disagree there. But you have also to lay blame on Obama for refusing to do the right thing. Spending isnt it. Reflating the housing bubble isnt it. The right thing to do is take our medicine like responsible adults come what may. That means fierce regulation of the banks, exposing the giant Ponzi scheme and putting the crooks AND politicians in jail.

ALL POLITICIANS AND BANKERS ARE TO BLAME. This isnt about partisan politics anymore. Obama is going down the same road and it will only make the crash harder and longer. The Banks and lending/Credit institutions have become an Oligarchy working in concert with the Government to perpetuate this giant fraud. Someday maybe we will figure out that it's us who will have to take it back and put the pieces of what remains back together.

The problem isn't Bush or Obama. The TPTB seem to follow the Keynesian economist theory which says (as I understand it) if the consumers stops spending then the government should start until the consumer spends again. It also believes that deficits do not matter. Go figure! That ain't gonna work with peak oil!

Oh, please. We just followed, for the last 3 years, right here, with prolific documentation, the mortgage derivitive Ponzi scheme as it unfolded. You guys can lick my angus.

Go ahead, tell me we didn't. Right here in these threads is all the documentation, all the way back to the beginning.

Don't try rewriting history here. We all know better. And I can drag it all out again if necessary. It's all right here.

They may have been able to rewrite history in the past with some effectiveness. But that was before the internet. There is so much documentation, in so many places, they won't be able to erase it this time.

I INHERITED IT!

Ya know, saint obama is going down in the guiness book of world records. Never in American history...not even during the worst of the great depression, has any incomming president wined so much about what he inherited!

If he can't handle the job, he shouldn't have asked for it!
