What happened to the Torture thread?

Unread postby bluekachina » Sat 25 Apr 2009, 10:24:13

It was here last night and now it's gone.

Seems the United States not only engages in Torture but in political censorship as well.

I have been happy to see some action is beginning to be taken in the US, but if not enough, the world court will get involved.

This is an international issue not a domestic US one.

My Chinese handlers disapproved of that thread... sorry about that.

I, for one, welcome our diminutive Chinese overlords.

The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Torture Witness Kills Herself With Service Rifle

Unread postby mattduke » Sun 26 Apr 2009, 21:07:08

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')n Arab-speaker, Peterson was assigned to work as an interpreter at interrogation sessions in a unit known as "The Cage". After only two nights, she refused to take further part in the sessions and was reassigned. Then, on 15 September, she shot herself with her service rifle. A notebook recording her thoughts was found by her body. Its contents were blanked out in the subsequent official report.

Church Goers More Likely To Support Torture

Unread postby mattduke » Sat 02 May 2009, 07:55:34

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')hite evangelical Protestants were the religious group most likely to say torture is often or sometimes justified — more than 6 in 10 supported it. People unaffiliated with any religious organization were least likely to back it. Only 4 in 10 of them did.

Not that big of a spread there, really. Only 20%.

Not that big a spread - 20% mmm

or....

White evangelical Protestants are 50% more likely to support torture. :)

That was my point above. WASPs were only 20% more likely to support torture than those who are least likely to support it. Not 50% more likely, that is an incorrect interpretation, I think.

The data means that on average, around 50% of everyone supports torture. It's amazing how unethical and unsympathetic we have become.

Sorry, I see what you mean now. You are correct. But if 4 atheists and 6 holy rollers support torture, that still is more similar than dissimilar to me. I'm surprised that even more than 1 out of 10 atheists support torture. Christians seem to have an "ends justifies the means" way of dealing with things, which is why they were able to murder hundreds of millions of people throughout history.

Torture is a natural byproduct of human nature, to deny torture is to deny that which makes us human, and when you do that, the terrorist win.

I agree. I'm a bit shocked at even the 40% figure. Maybe I shouldn't be.

A sampling of 742 people is about as far from accurate as you can get.

They did not ask if anyone was atheist, only if they rarely or ever went to church, they could still have been theists

Don't be.

Remember, 99% of those who voted last November voted for continuing the pointless wars, so we really shouldn't be surprised at all by this torture survey. I would have expected more than half the people in the US to support torture since nearly everyone demands more equally cruel war. But I suspect some are reluctant to admit this to others thus the poll probably shows a lower number than what it really is.

Victims of religious brain-washing are probably more apt to accept the prevalent media brainwashing, which has said for years now, that torture is a great idea.
No surprise.
