$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Shannymara', 'S')eaGypsy, I am aware of the test you described, and it is in the books I have as well. But I do not think it works for mushrooms.

Check out Scandanavian guides especially Finn. They suggest the method also and they eat over 200 types of fungus. They have about 5 that are deadly and a few more long term liver toxins.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Quinny', 'A')re there any mammals or birds that are toxic?

The higher up the food chain the more toxic the meat (especially the liver); as noted by other posters. Another issue is worm infestation, in tropical climates there are types of worm which infest muscle and skin as well as gut. This means the meat must be thoroughly cooked.
Most Australians would not eat wild pig for this reason; however the same meat is very highly sought after for premium sausages in Germany and some other European countries. Of course it is very processed by the time it is eaten.

Don't forget to go to stores and feedlots, and find out what needs to be done to convert dog and cat food and livestock feed into food.

I would figure that if it comes to the point where it is at all necessary to follow advice on this thread the animal feeds will already be in very short supply. Have you got your tongue in your cheek medicvet?

Hell, even chickens have glands (greenish blue sacks) you have to watch for... or is that the bladder. can't remember now. Don't forget pigeons, there are some good recipes for squab stew on the net. gives your kids something to do with the ends of bread crusts no one wants to eat, and attracts a regular flock to you in the park or where ever.

We have a guy who has been feeding them in the downtown core for a few years, I swear he's got a flock of of couple hundred living her year round now.... things go down hill, I know where to go.

As for bugs... yeuch! have you ever eaten a worm? Its disgusting... mind you if you can get used to something as buckleys, this would be a walk in the park, though the will always taste bad... no matter how many you eat.

Les has a veteran specific bush survivor camp in remote Cape York, they welcome visitors but it's especially intended to be a refuge for veterans.
Most long termers are Vietnam Vets from Australia, with a few from the USA and NZ.
