$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('MarkJ', 'B')artering with professional services online is a good way of avoiding taxation, licensing, insurance, permits, inspections, codes, regulations, travel time, gas, diesel, paperwork etc.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')opic 420 - Bartering Income

Bartering occurs when you exchange goods or services without exchanging money. An example of bartering is a plumber doing repair work for a dentist in exchange for dental services. The fair market value of goods and services received in exchange for goods or services you provide must be included in income in the year received.

No kidding, the company I used to work for in the 1990's had to redo their accounting practices when the IRS learned they were trading favors with another bussiness down the street. It was nothing nefarious, they borrowed a backhoe and operator in exchange for a full tank of fuel for the machine but the IRS acted like it was a grand conspiricy. The company I worked for had to work out a value receipt for both sides of the transaction, how much was the fuel worth etc etc and charge that to the other company so that both sets of books reflected 'the true value exchange' for tax purposes.

Online bartering isn't really popular since most unlicensed, uninsured handymen, side-jobbers or contractors working without plans, permits, inspections, variances, local business licenses, cutting corners, violating codes, working for cash/trade, avoiding taxes/permit fees/guarantees/receipts etc try to avoid paper or electronic trails.

Besides avoiding paper/electronic trails like the plague, they'll drive unlettered vehicles, drive passenger cars, get dropped of at jobs, work nights, work weekends, purchase equipment/materials/supplies with cash and avoid purchasing from professional-only suppliers to avoid detection by code enforcement, other contractors and to avoid taxation.

Good luck proving that. Ha.. No receipt... No cash... If the other guy rats its your word against his. IRS has better things to do than waste resources on bartered items.

I agree if you make a lifestyle out of it but for three or four transactions..... I think you would be safe. There are bigger fish to fry. Not that you would want to place any size of a target on your back for any three letter agency to find..

What they do is by and large a waste of resources period, though. You could always become their scapegoat de jour, like those who attempt to exercise their right to not pay taxes. Ugh, can I deduct the effort to construct a sentence without a double negative? :-D

We are all going to need them when the money becomes worthless.

I have identified 2 things that are not taxed.
1-the air you breath
2-sex

Can anyone give me a third thing that is not taxed?
If the government could figure out how to tax these 2 items, there is no doubt they would do so immediately.

So don't barter. Instead, engage in the Sharing or Gift economy. You can give tens of thousands of dollars $$$ without anyone having to pay any tax, and there is no limit on non-cash gifts to anyone (real estate, vehicles, and boats may fall into a taxable gift category, so be sure to look into this before you give someone a chunk of land or a boat). :)

Sales tax on the bicycle/parts and on the mandatory helmet. All sorts of road taxes included in DMV fees, although a cyclist can get around those. How long until you have to register your bike for use on public roads?

environmental permits
tax on the fuel in the truck that hauled those bike parts to the dump
property tax on the dumpsite
income tax on the guy working at the dump
sales tax on the bike in the dump, when it was new
