$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Aaron', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('vtsnowedin', '8')) We just overthrew the government at the ballot box. The guys we put in as replacements look like a car chaseing dog that just caught a school bus by the rear tire. In two years we can overthrow the duberment again but may not want to return the last batch to power. Perhaps a third party will rise up and win it. Perhaps the Peak oil party. 8O In America I'd say that is more likely then a 'the rebels shooting at the army revolution'.It might take two years for all the bills to come due and the crisis to happen anyway.

Agreed.

Who will you revolt against?

Your own actions, or more likely, inactions, put the powers that be in there to begin with.

Gonna revolt against yourself?

Heard an ad on the radio on my way home for lunch, Fox news at 5 tonight is doing a special brainstorming hour on the Worst Case Scenario for the USA and World 2009. I won'tr be home until it is half over but it might be Doomerific to see these 'experts' predicting everything that can go wrong in the next 10 months.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Alfred Tennyson', 'W')e are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

Pain in the mind is what it is. Profound disquiet, panic even. I've only felt a little bit of it through the years, but even that was enough to let me know how bad it could be. Many take mental health for granted, nothing to worry about. But it is. Both of my brothers take medication for anxiety and panic attacks. My father lost everything to the bipolar thing. He was a kind and intelligent man. Mental illness is a tragedy.

Not a bad idea, actually, since the way most of us live put us in this position. We can pretend, I suppose, that we never had anything to do with the status quo, banks, the economy, unsustainable energy, politics, taxes, etc. But we would (most of us) be lying to ourselves. I've generally suggested, since I have been here on po.com, that people revolt against a way of life they find distasteful by beginning to live a different way. But that's not an idea, nor is it philosophical, I guess, so it isn't important to the philosophers among us, apparently. My meaningful posts have been about little else than revolution, but they don't matter, as it turns out. Oh well! :)

Great thread Ludi you sure know how to stir the pot!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('HeckuvaJob', '&')quot;Make a plan and work it". OK, this sounds promising. Lets say that we get 90% of our members "peak oil ready" (as defined by... some criteria). What about our communities? After all, no man is an island. But I'm having a hard enough time getting my own shit together.

Ain't that the truth. There are several threads discussing community preparations/transitions/etc. in PFTF but it isn't all about protests I think, mostly about just building ties. grow some tomato starts and give or sell them to a neighbor, help them out when the sink leaks, take over some food when they have a death or birth in the family and take them some cookies at Christmas.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('seldom_seen', 'A') revolutionary doesn't have to be out in the streets making an ass of himself. That's for the mob...

Yea, that's the thing.
All politics are local.
Or:

Lead, follow or get trampled by the mob trying to get out of the way.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('ReverseEngineer', 'T')he problem would be it offends Pops' "Make a Plan and Work It" Philosophy of Life. If you aren't hip deep in horse shit, Pops has no time for your Revolutionary ideals. LOL.
... Pops, you could work your way out of the horse shit once in a while to a higher plane as well ;-) The mind is a terrible thing to waste.

Now RE you know, I hope, that there are several threads in PFTF started or compiled by yours truly discussing ideas for urban/suburban transition and many ideas I have posted in those threads would look like a revolution to those living insuch places.

But hey, my hobby horse is re-localization, especially in small town America, what can I say? Here is a guy I have elevated my eye's from the pies to read and correspond with from time to time:
http://web.missouri.edu/~ikerdj/papers/

He is a guy you would admire because he talks about things The Greater Other should do and not what he has done.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Aaron', 'W')ho will you revolt against?

Your own actions, or more likely, inactions, put the powers that be in there to begin with.

Gonna revolt against yourself?

That's the deal, we (at least in the "New World") do need to revolt against ourselves.

Or at least the part of Manifest Destiny that tells us we are entitled to take whatever we can and leave for the Devil (and our kids) to take the hindmost.
The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves -- in their separate, and individual capacities.

I think the slow revolution or walking away from the pyramid doesn't appeal to people because it isn't dramatic (it's dull, like our posts, Pops :) ), and doesn't happen over night. Of course a person could choose to make sudden dramatic changes to their own life, but that might be scary and hard. 8O

"freedom begins with an act of defiance."

Anyone who is still stuck in BAU mode by now is about as clueless as it gets and will soon be deservedly removed from the gene pool. The folks here are some of the best--the losers are all over on the NASCAR website.

I'm trying to learn to be revolting oo, but it's just hard to do when one is as naturally appealing as myself.

You can't have a "slow revolution", then it is "evolution". It might be interesting, but only in time-lapse photography :-) Watching Australopithecus evolve to Homo Sapiens would be INCREDIBLY dull in real time, like watching Pops plant Potatoes or milking the Goats :-) In timelapse though, both would be fairly interesting.

Anyhow, there IS a Revolution going on, with EXTREME rapidity, what last year was nominally a market based democracy this year is socialized industry and nationalized banks. It would be the RESULTS of this revolution that should prove fairly interesting as people's lives are dislocated in the transition.

I would say someone who is already unemployed like cbxer55 is in a better position to make big changes in his life than someone like me, for instance, who has golden shackles as a well-paid programmer. But then, maybe someone who is unemployed and spending all his hours on peakoil.com bashing Obama might be indicative of a lack of motivation.
