The city is extremely hilly.

A 1 meter rise in sea level will not lead to the total destruction of San Fransisco.

I'm speaking of more than a meter by 2100.

Miami should also be in there. It averages less than 1m in elevation. It's demographics are arguably more precarious and explosive than Detroits or New Orleans' ever were. It's the "third poorest city in the USA" right behind Detroit and El Paso according to wiki. "Sea level rise would push salt water in Miami-Dade's sole source of freshwater drinking supply."

Then you got the hurricanes, race-riots, and the whole bermuda triangle connection. It all adds up to one big Zombie-fest.

Forbes lists Chicago among Nation's miserable cities.

Postby blukatzen » Wed 11 Feb 2009, 03:34:57

http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/1422442,chicago-miserable-city-forbes-021009.article

Sorry to say that Forbes thinks that our fine City is Miserable. I beg to differ.

What factors were used as criteria....

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'F')orbes used nine factors -- commute times, corruption, pro sports teams, Superfund sites, income and sales taxes, unemployment, violent crime and weather -- when ranking the cities.

and more....

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'C')hicago is America's third most miserable city, beating out bleak towns like Flint, Mich. and Buffalo, NY, according to a recently released Forbes magazine list.

Chicago's dubious ranking comes just six months after the magazine dubbed Chicago the most stressed-out city in America.

The magazine said Chicago's weather, long commute times, rising unemployment and the country's highest sales tax earned it the number three spot on the list, below Stockton, Calif. and Memphis.

Ah, the cold weather keeps the riff-raff out. We are FAR from being the Country's most stressed-out City.

What say you my fellow Chicagoans and Illinoisans? Hoosiers? Cheeseheads? Well?

I'd have to rank LA and Atlanta as more stressed out, just from observations of the newz. Does anybody even count Detroit in these reckonings?

If they think the weather is bad there, go to Minneapolis! I've only been there a few times and it seems to be like every other big city to me. Then again, you couldn't pay me enough to live there.

And from judging from my own city, the weather does NOT KEEP THE GHETTO THUGS away! They just stay warm sleeping with their big fat welfare pigs... I wish we could deport them back to Chicago, since that is the area (CHI/MKE) where they all come from.

It wasn't so bad in the 50's and 60's......... :P

I'm stuck here for a few more years - until the house is paid for. Some areas are nice. I'm 20 min from downtown Mpls & St Paul. 6 blocks away from the freeway and buses stop 50 ft from my door. Not working helps, as the traffic sucks. I still remember those 52 mile-a-day commutes.

Wouldn't be one of my criteria.

I moved to Chicago from a small town 30 years ago with the intention of staying for only 10 years. Moved into the north side (where else) and loved it. Still do. It's the only big city I'd live in. New york, LA; I wouldn't take money to live there. Minneapolis, you got to be kidding. What's left, Atlanta, the north east, southwest... no way. There's only one city in the country I love and that's Chicago. It's the people.

That said, the winter is horrible. The streets a disaster. Commute impossible. Crime, it only takes once, but lucky so far.

Still, any big city is now obsolete, Chicago included. Peak oil and the ever worsening economy is going to make big city life near impossible. The potholes from this winter will never be fixed. Crime will skyrocket. The mood, even among city people will darken to black. The livable center will shrink drastically and you'd better pray your abode is within the protected zone or you'll be at the mercy of the new warlords. It's not going to be pretty.

Oh well, it was so good while it lasted.

I lived in Chicago from 1986 to 1990. Loved it. It's the only big city I would ever live in. I'd still be there if things had gone differently.

I especially like the public transportation. And I never had a problem with crime there.

So unless things have changed drastically, I don't think it's a miserable city at all.

What neighborhood did you live in, (or what nearest large street intersection, I am nearest Belmont/Pulaski, in the Hermosa Neighborhood, which is due West of Logan Square, and just south of Avondale and Old Irving Park.)

Ah, I know exactly where you were at, since I am an alum of U of I Chicago! I ate many a good meal at those Italian restaurants. Did you ever eat at Rosebud Cafe? I sell her plants for all of her "empire" now. She owns quite a few restaurants now, and each one of her kids runs one, or has a hand in it. I also sell her chefs all of their herbs. (from our Garden centers.) *I* am not in the city, but neither is she, she's out in Naperville.

I had to look it up. I never did, too bad ... I just lived on the other side of the park there. I never knew it was there. But back then I never had money to eat out anyway.

Why is Forbes spreading lies?

Postby jboogy » Sun 17 May 2009, 19:58:01

Here's a big load of crap from that notoriously socialist rag Forbes.com. [smilie=bs.gif] http://abcnews.go.com/print?id=7585729 [smilie=bs.gif]

They completely ignored some huge factors that could, (or should), go into any reasonable persons assessment of what makes a countries people happy. For instance, no mention of the fact we have one of the widest gaps between the rich and poor in the world. Our rich aren't just rich, they're much, much wealthier than everyone else. And if our elites suffer want, doesn't that really make all of us feel bad? [smilie=sad2.gif]

We also are capable of completely dominating the airspace of any third world banana republic we choose, TOPGUN baby, Maverick and Goose baby, who's your Daddy now beeyotch? [smilie=qtank.gif]

Our economy is HUGE!!!!! We have like the biggest amount of domestic product in the world, that kind of pride makes ALL of us much, much happier. I know I get tingly all over when I think of how big our product is! [smilie=wav.gif]

And what about the satisfaction that only comes from success, especially success that either comes at the expense of someone else, or simply the joy of making it while so many others around you fail. I'm #1, I'm #1!!!!! [smilie=eusa_dance.gif]
Seriously, if having a good job and lots of toys while simultaneously preaching about how everyone who doesn't is a loser,.... is not one of the great joys of being American, I don't know what is. [smilie=occasion17.gif] God I love being a successful Republican. All you liberal f*ckt*rds can take a flying f*ck at the moon. [smilie=thefinger.gif]

Actually, this data isn't from Forbes. Its from the OECD.

The story begins.....According to a new report released by the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD), a Paris-based group.....

So the bottom line here is that a Paris-based group of countries mainly from northern Europe found that France and other mainly northern European countries are the best countries in the world.

Quelle surprise!

Based on
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'G')allup World Poll conducted in 140 countries around the world last year.

It would be interesting to repeat that survey and report today, since the bubbles started to burst.

Anyone happier than last year?
