If you have cell service you might be able to rig up one of those 3G routers where you pop the sim into it and then connect your computer via WiFi.

StormBringer, we hate to see you go. The above posts tell you that it need not be that way. Loss of internet ought to be your last sacrifice, not your first. From my research, Wildblue is the best of the satellite connections (I've had Direcway, also Hughesnet). They run about $50/ mo. for pretty good connection, plus a couple of hundred up front--that's it. The dish is only 2' diameter or so, & not like the old-fashioned giant tv dishes that got folks upset. It can be mounted on the side of your house. Think of it as part of your necessary medical expenses---you'll go nuts without internet!

Sorry I've been away running this morning to the Bank and found out that even though there is a law only my front yard is in city limits so if I get a sat in the back of the house they cant say a word, according to the bank. And yes there is a law. Something about an agreement between the city and the cable company to bring cable to cover the town but had to restrict sat dishes in the agreement. Which gave them the monopoly.

So I'm going to call around for prices today but it still may be a while before I'm back on depending on the cost. As I've said limited income makes it hard some times. But it looks like I have at least some options.

Talked to my parents and they are in the same boat and shut there cable off too there rate was higher than mine. And its the same service....just different town.....same company.....But higher rates....Man these people are crooks.......

I hate to say this but I believe this is a sign of the times and I wont be the last on this sight to have such problems.........Lets hope not.

Although there might be a law on the books, if it violates antitrust laws, it would be unenforceable.

Only 3 days ago we had this conversation:

dunewalker wrote:
"You might as well kick back and enjoy it while you can--you are doomed. Your electrical consumption could supply an entire village, btw. As a matter of fact, your house could shelter an entire village."

StormBringer wrote:
"Yes it could but the consumption goes hand in hand. I have wood stoves and fireplace for back up so im not as doomed as you might think."

And now we're waving good bye...

Regarding your comment on limited income: I think the solution is in matching consumption to income--in your case, to cut back on electrical use for example, which would finance the cost of the internet connection.

I agree. See if you can close off parts of the house so they don't need to be heated, or, see if you can get by on space-heating with the woodstove and maybe some efficient electric heaters -the oil-filled kind seem to work well - we use them sometimes to preheat the bedroom before bedtime, turning them off when we settle in for the night. Obviously you need to keep parts of the house with plumbing well above freezing. It's not that uncomfortable to have parts of the house no warmer than 55-60 F, and wear some sweaters.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('cbxer55', 'S')heesh. How often do you get paid?
Bi-weekly, Once a month?
For a time my wife and I worked for the CA School Dsitrict.
Both of us got paid once a month. What a pain that was.
At least it appears you have an option. A short while and you'll be back. Hope it works out for you.

I get my retirement once a mth and the wife is bi weekly....But the first of the mth as with everyone, all the bills are due so the second check is all but free so Should be next Friday before I can pay for it and then however long to actually get it installed.

During the winter with the increase in heating bills and the slow down at my wife's job (bonus based on sales). Yes its paycheck to paycheck for about 3 to 4 mths but it normally recovers in late march for her and I make a little during the summer from the garden. We have done just about everything to conserve where ever possible, but we recently had to buy a used truck for my wife so that kinda depleted our reserves. So for the time being ITS PAYCHECK TO PAYCHECK. But this is not normal for us we know winter is hard for us and normally have a nest egg for such things just not this year.

If I were you I would get one of those free initial consultations with an anti-trust lawyer. It sounds like you have been wronged, so you should be able to start up a case. They can't stop you from having a dish.
When it comes down to it, the people will always shout, "Free Barabbas." They love Barabbas. He's one of them. He has the same dreams. He does what they wish they could do. That other guy is more removed, more inscrutable. He makes them think. "Crucify him."

Check out Skype. My cousin has that, he doesn't use a phone at all at home. The basic service used to be free, I haven't used it in a while so I don't know. But I used to talk to my friend in Australia for free.

SB--

You will be missed. Hope you can come back soon. Maybe you can put Lowenstein in touch with me or R.E. so we can keep that window of conversation open at least?
