Good Bye From StormBringer

Unread postby StormBringer » Thu 05 Feb 2009, 23:35:28

Well it pains me but I must bid P.O. fair-well.

I received my Internet/cable bill and for the 3rd time in about a year they have raised it to what is now a unreasonable level.

I refuse to pay $170.00 for cable and Internet service that cost only $75.00 last year.

They have a monopoly here in BFE. Though I will explore other options I'm afraid they are limited at best.

I Wish You All The Best

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('cbxer55', 'W')hat the he-double-toothpicks kind of cable do you have?
Admittedly we only have basic cable and the lowest speed internet, but it suffices just fine, for under $50.00 per month.
Are there options like that available?
Because I am sure going to miss your input on the volcano thread.
Think of something my friend. Your a major player on that one.

I don't know about you, but tv is one thing I can live without. I told my wife to completely eliminate the tv, and just have the low speed internet connection. Because I would be bored to tears without internet service. I love to read, I love to stay informed. The internet is the #1 place to do both. Plus e-mail for far-flung friends and relatives makes it imperative I at least keep that.

Don t go man. Just cut the boob tube out.

The Internet and cable are one in the same thing here I'M afraid and as I said they have a monopoly and they know it. They have gone way past reasonable and I can no longer justify the expense at the cost of my family. I too will miss the interaction I have found here with many of you.

Can't you just use dial-up? Mine costs about $13/month, plus another $25/mo for the phone line.

Dial up is through a local monopoly as well. Sometimes I hate being in BFE. I checked the rates for them and it wasn't much better so besides my cell which I may pop in from time to time I'm pretty screwed. I'm going to check into a Sat Dish hook up and see if I can get the net through them If this po dunk town doesn't have a law about dishes........Which I think they might since I have yet to see one here.........

In this town you have one electric company
One water company
one cable company
and one gas company.
And one phone company (a so called co op) city owned

All owned by one man and O ya he's on the city council...And as you can tell owns half the town so no one is going to stand up to him...God I love politics.............LOL

That's what I was thinking. Phone line.

Or get a laptop and catch the waves from town now and then ... for free!

Got a lap top but town is to small NO FREE WAVES HERE.

I moved here to get away from such things and low and behold here they are. Its not uncommon around here to have everything owned by a single person or family. And slowly but surly they put the screws to everyone. The town once boasted almost 2000 people now its lucky to have 500. This town is slowly being bled to death by this man. Hek he even owns the only gas station here....

And the phone line thing well let me give you the numbers and you tell me if you would pay it

Deposit $75.00
Phone line $35.00
12 cent a min for any out of town call
AND THE INTERNET NUMBER IS LONG DISTANCE.....................
But they say the actual internet service is free..................LOL

So you tell me would you pay it?

Sounds like it's just moonshining and banjo by the camp fire for you mate. Not too bad I guess if you can handle the withdrawals.
Suggest you use the weekend to download as much useful stuff as possible so you have reading material on the computer.
All the best.

Do you have a land line phone? If so, you can keep your Net Access for around $8-10/mo with dialup. I use dialup, its not a problem for text sites like Peak Oil. Alternatively, if you have a cell phone, you can keep access on that for about $20 extra.

Altenatively, you can find free WiFi Hotspots in almost every decent city (I used a free WiFi connection in Hawaii I found at a Popeye's Fried Chicken close to where I was staying).

Alternatively, you can buy ATT WiFi for $20/mo stand alone, and they have thousands of Hotspots in Borders, Starbucks, Airports etc etc etc.

Plenty of reasonable choices for net service without coughing up outrageous money to your local cable provider. Besides, how can we handicap the Super Volcanos without you?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')tep one: Lose the guilt. The FCC told me that they don't know of any federal or state laws that make it illegal to log on to an open network.

That's good enough for me.

8) I have wild Blue for the computer and Dish network for the TV from the same company using two dishes. Bill is $125.99 a month and I don't have all the bells and whistles on the TV. The bill is more then enough and will be one of the first things to go when the SH my fan but the service is good. You can have just the computer dish for $65 a month.
Stay in touch even if its just catch as catch can. Your posts are worth the read. :)

My last ditch emergency connection is BAMnet, which gives you an 800 number to call so its all paid for including the phone charges. If you are down in the lower 48 I think it works out to about 5 cents a minute. No installation costs, no nada.

It forces you to ration your time spent on the net of course, and what I do is D/L a number of pages then sign off, read through the material, write whatever it is I am going to write and then sign on to upload that, D/L a few more pages, rinse and repeat.

For $20/mo, around 400 minutes you guys mostly would not be able to tell I was only on the net for a few minutes each day. I have had to use the BAMnet connection on a few occassions when my regular dialup was offline.

So anyhow, although somewhat restricted, I do not think Storm really needs to say a complete Goodbye to his friends at Peak Oil. Or to the Seismos. Storm, I can't imagine you not being able to check out whats shaking in the world. ;-)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Shannymara', 'I') don't want to encourage you to be a consumer for no good reason, but you can get satellite internet and TV pretty much anywhere with one of the big companies for a lot less than $170/month.

Satellite Internet (DirecWay) used to run us $60/month. Hookup was something like $500 though, because the dish must be extremely carefully aligned as compared to satellite TV, and IIRC we had to buy the receiver (modem).

It's a miserable service in terms of quality -- skips out at every bit of moisture in the sky, and at other random times just for the heck of it -- but it beats nothing I guess.

Storm,

Your troubles aside I think you are doing a valuable service here by reporting your issues. Many here talk about moving to BFE and adopting a survival lifestyle. Yep, probably won't have internet or cable or trash pick up or city water/sewer.

I ended up "out back" for about a week a couple of years ago. Wife called out the Coast Guard. Embarrassing!

Now I have an Iridium phone. I got one used on e-bay for $700~$800. The service is fair as the satellites tend to drop out at odd times. Annual service pack of 500 minutes is going for about $700 as I recall. Incoming calls charged to the other party. No telemarketers!

That sounds like a lot but it works EVERYWHERE as long as you are outside. As an emergency device and for occasional use it may be viable.
