One should just try to teach (and cultivate within oneself) the art of differetiating true fear (the "sixth sense" that may well save your life in an emergency) from panic & irrationality & general franticness (which is more likely to get you killed or hurt than to save you).
True fear is your ally. False fear is the enemy, this is the fear people always talk about overcoming.
Accurate for the most part. However, in Human Beings, inherent fear exists in some to a greater extent than others. Some children are absolutely fearless, some are incredibly timid. I have spoken many times about teaching children, I will tell you specifically what I do. I teach competitive gymnastics. I teach children to throw very hard tricks, tricks that can kill them if they screw up. I teach 6 year olds to throw double back somersaults in the air. I have been doing this for near 30 years now.
You won't live too long as a gymnast if you don't understand what you are doing is dangerous and just go an throw willy nilly. Neither will you be successful at doing these things if you are not incredibly well prepared to do them, very strong of body and of mind. In the world of gymnastics, we wash them out all the time, very few can stand up to the rigors of this sport. Its so tough to make it thru you cannot believe it. But in every generation I have taught, some always come to it, some in fact do make it thru and succeed at it. I don't like seeing them wash out, but most do. I have to let them go, and I have to place my effort in training with those who CAN succeed, who can survive. Many things come into play, from physical attributes to psychological ones, emotinal and economic ones also. Its a micorcosm of life, and I learned most of what I know teaching it.
You think the Boys Scouts or Girls Scouts are the best place for a child to learn to survive? I dont think so. Try competitive gmynastics. Only the strong survive.
