Not really playing the blame game here. Just trying to look at the whole bailout phenomenon.
The government is not in the business of running a corporation for profit. Trickle-down economics aside, the government is presumably in the business of serving the welfare state in order to keep the voters happy. So bean-counter tactics designed to maximize profit while minimizing headcount, salaries, benefits, etc... conflict with what the government would like to see on the ground as far as employment statistics and voter satisfaction.
So really the government should have little interest whether the car companies live or die outside of how it impacts the working class.
