We've had similar threads.

This is a subject on which I'm torn. However . . .

In the final analysis, I consider nationalism to be a destructive and illogical force that's blighted the lives of most individuals and the earth.

It cannot come to good and will probably do us all in.

There are certain positions Obama could adopt that would make me much prouder to be an American, but I don't think he's going to take any of them.

I don't expect America as we know it to survive. It's already half dead.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Auntie_Cipation', 'P')ride is a response to a specific accomplishment, not a general feeling....

Thanks Auntie.

Can I have pride that my country seems to have accomplished another dramatic change of government with no bloodshed?

No sarcasm intended.

I sometimes wonder at the comments of the people on this board, bad news is bad and different news is worse.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('AlexdeLarge', 'I') am very proud to be American!! ( But then I know what its like to live elsewhere.)

You have been poisoned by listenening to the mainstream media trash America at every opportunity in order to demonize Bush and get their pigeon elected. "The One's" mentor Rev. Wright hates the country and his best buddy Bill Ayers wipes his feet on the flag. But I'm sure the messiah was not influenced by their tutoring and at least his wife is finally proud to be a citizen.

So now we have a whole government that dispises their country and its traditions and will do their level best to remake it into some new "honorable" nation. How very nice of them.

That's more like alcoholic pride than national pride.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Pops', 'S')eems to me there must be at least one other person at PO.com proud to be an American at this time.

Or am I wrong?

Are you kidding?

You're asking PO.com? A crowd of people who think that the USA is going tits up in the not-too-distant future? And pretty much celebrate it?

The upshot of most posting around here is that American ingenuity, science and economics has wrecked the environment and unleashed dire, irreversible consequences which will soon deliver doom upon the global population at large.

How can anyone at PO.com believe in the Olduvai Gorge and still say they are "proud" of America?

But it is not a dramatic change of government. The same exact groups remain in power. Even many of the same individuals.

Indeed. The show is what's all about. McNuggets and Fox, aka bread and circuses.

I'm reading a history of Western Civilization right now. Really helps keep things in perspective.

It's a dramatic change of government compared to BushCo but since most po members want radical changes that J6P would never endorse, there is no way in hell we'd see anything more dramatic than this.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Leanan', 'I') used to be. Not anymore.

Not because we as a nation are any worse than we've ever been. Nor because other nations are any better.

It's because I'm seeing the bigger picture now. And it's all about resources. Our nation has done well because of its natural resources. Anyone in charge of such wealth would do well. We were born on third base and thought we hit a triple.

Best post I've read on PO.com, and I've been reading for almost 4 years.

2 side notes -

1. What made America what it was in the 1900s was cheap oil and coal. That's it. Don't get so caught up with the rest of the bullsh-t that you lose sight of that.

America was never a democracy. If you think it was, then go back to 1917 and 1918 when they passed the Espionage Act and the Sedition Act which made it punishable to speak out against the war or conscription.

This is a democracy only as long as that facade is convenient for the monied interests. It'll be gone as soon as that model doesn't work for the Maddoffs of the world, which it soon won't.

2. Nationalism is for suckers. It's the alcohol that is used to convince young men to go get shot up over - - - some sh-t. Who cares what the cause is? Wave the stupid flag, play the stupid songs, send the boys off to die fighting for . . . whatever.

Stop clinging to the "America is great" nationalist nonsense.

America existed for just over 200 years. We'll be lucky to get another 10 out of her. After that, who knows?

What new flags will be created and flown?

Who cares.

Do yourself a favor and don't die in any stupid revolutions for stupid causes for stupid flags and stupid songs. In the end, the result will be the same.

People are mostly cattle, and if sacrifice yourself to let them out of the barbed-wire enclosure, you're a fool, because as soon as they get a little hungry and a little cold, they're going to run back in and everything you did will be lost.

Look at what happened to America.

How many millions of men died for Old Glory?

For what?

So that 50% of American adults could be obese and in a house that they can't afford?

So that we can invade and occupy the oil rich regions of the world?

So that the original liberties could be slowly eroded for the alleged purpose of protecting us from crazy people on the other side of the world who, maybe, JUST MAYBE, would leave us alone if we left them alone?

Leanan hit it perfectly.

When you back up and can see the forest, in addition to the trees you already see, what you see is that nationalism is for suckers, and it's just one more form of thought control that is used to extort compliance from the sheep.

For all of those who see that 911 was an inside job, it's an easy ploy to understand.

This is complete horse-sh-t, which I expect from Mos.

Obama is no different than Bush. "Dramatic." Please. What crap.

1st, the guy, in the midst of a depression, is about to blow money on the most expensive inauguration ever.

What a jerk. But more to the point - what a Bush.

He's going to expand the war in Afghanistan - what a Bush.

He voted for the Fakriot act - twice. What a Bush.

Him and his Isaeli citizen Chief of Staff want to have a "domestic military force" of citizens. What a Bush.

He has not indicated he will make torture illegal - What a Bush.

He's Black Bush with a Silver tongue.

He's much more dangerous than Bush - not only is he a complete and filthy corporate whore, he's a compelling one, and I have a feeling that he's going to increase the pace at which this ship is going down.

The only real question I have about the guy is - is it on purpose?

I suppose you can be proud, provided you ignore both the internal and international murder and theft that has allowed you to live in a debt riddled fantasy of success.

Won't we have to wait until they actually DO something to know if that is a fact? If nothing changes, then we'll know it's not a "dramatic change of government."

You include Canada in that large pile of crap, right?

I mean, the U.S. is 90% of Canada's trade, and if you feed and clothe the murderer, and put the gun in his hand, and drive him to the victim's house, and pick the lock, and hold the victim down for the rape, and then turn your head when the tripper is pulled, then you are part of the pile of crap too, right?

If you are, then I agree with your point.

If you are not, then you're just waving a different stupid flag. What does yours have on it? A fanciful leaf?

Canada has been America's personal resource whore for 100 years. As is judged America so must also be judged Canada, and all others who aligned themselves with the Empire.

I used to be a proud American. I used to be willing to go fight Russians - those were the Eurasians when I was a kid.

Now the Eurasians are the "terrorists."

The first House TARP vote. At that moment I was proud to be an American. I don't think the vote on something like the TARP would have failed in any other country except the United States.

Although the TARP eventually passed it was a great moment where the normally legislators stood and said no to morally and economically bankrupt forces that hold so much sway over the country's economy.

At that moment the desire to do what was right was more important than Wall Street or the moneyed financial interest. In that shining moment we as a people made the decision to do the right thing and not the expedient or convenient thing.

TARP was a defining moment in American history and if we had chosen properly America could have been a great nation that stood for accountability honesty and decency. Unfortunately that's not what happened but for one moment we as a country/nation and a people did something great. Even if it was for only a moment voting down the TARP was a true reason to feel proud to be an American.

I'll just follow up by adding I agree with those who say America's moment as the indispensable nation has passed, or is passing quickly. But I take no pleasure in it. I think a period of serious instability and upheaval will follow soon.

Nelson Mandela told historian Niall Ferguson (in "The Rise and Fall of the British Empire") of how proud he was, as a boy growing up in Africa, to be raised under "the British system". Because Britain, as he put it, "represented everything that was best in the world". And despite all, he was not shy to admit that the British Empire was ultimately a force for good in the world.

When I read this at first it surprised me, but then I saw Mandela's wisdom. After all, the very system that subjugated him also gave him the means to overcome, and assume the highest office in the land. You can't say that about Russian oppression, or Communist China's oppression of its citizens. Likewise, I believe there are many countries with a track record far worse than the United States, particularly where human rights are concerned. Just travel abroad for any period of time and you'll quickly discover this.
