Well hello and welcome to our forums, take a look around, (that goes for the newbies who haven't posted a "hello" either) and see where you may have some ideas, thoughts, and opinions.

There are friendly and courteous folks here with some good ideas, good thoughts. We don't "enforce" chit-chat, just when you feel ready to jump right in.

Isn't that what any forum on any subject matter is about? It's about getting to know your fellow list members, is all.

Happy Holidays!

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he instructions tell me to post first here.

Well, at least you're friendly. I do hope you end up posting sooner rather than later; I've been visiting this site since June/July 2007 and have been a member since August, yet don't feel I have much to add, unfortunately.

Hopefully you do!

Hi Taco!

Why is that you suppose..not feeling you have much to add? Just curious...? :( (I am not picking on "you" per se, just want to know why some don't post.)

Re: My first post

Postby kakkerlak » Tue 16 Dec 2008, 20:46:33

Hmmmm....

I want to use my own "first post topic" to apologize.

I'm an obsessive perfectionist as i like to call myself and because of that i usually don't write much on forums. Speaking in real life is much easier for me then writing, because when i make a mistake in a conversation i am not able to correct myself in advance.

I have written many many posts in reaction to topics around here without posting it, simply because i didn't consider my own texts perfect enough. I am never happy about my own posts. Never!

There are many things i have to say and i think i sometimes have a tiny little bit to contribute now and then. When i feel strong and confident enough i press the "submit" button, but in most cases i write, write and write without ever pressing that button.

I'm reading this forum for a few years and this is the only place filled with people that are able to understand my thoughts about the world. For some weird reason nobody in the "real world" i know is able to even grasp the basics of peak oil and all other things that are discussed on this forum.

I'm actually saying this in the wrong way; nobody i know is able to grasp the basics of your ideas. This is because i didn't know about peak oil and many other problems in the world before visiting this forum.

The reason i'm writing this is at first to apologize for my future posts. I am not a smart person. Some say that i am, but i know i am not. Even the most irritating and unintelligent poster around here makes arguments i wouldn't even consider. I have learned many things by simply reading this forum. By reading very intelligent posts and even by reading very dumb posts.

Uhhh...

To repeat myself; i am not a smart person. I never finished any formal education and i do not understand math, physics, history, chemistry, biology and my knowledge of the English language is very limited. Whatever i know is "self-thought". That's the only thing i'm proud of; i am not influenced by anything, i am completely free in my mind and every single thought i have is made by me personally.

I'm probably writing more then you want to read, so i'm going to stop writing here. From now on i'm going to attempt to stop being a perfectionist and write a little bit more. This means that i'm going to write what i think. This also means that sometimes i sound like a dumb ass and on rare occasions i say something that's intelligent. Forgive me for that.

A few quotes from myself that i like to share:

"I read thousand posts, a hundred books and then i finally write one sentence without anyone knowing about it."

"I believe nothing, i know nothing and at the same time i believe everything and i know it all."

"When you're not able to explain something to a child you do not understand it."

"Nobody understand me! *whining* Because i don't explain myself."

Ugh...i hate writing! I'm afraid for that "submit" button. :(

Have fun!
Roach
As an obsessive perfectionist it is not unusual for me to spend an hour writing and re-writing a single sentence. When abandoning perfection i ask you to judge me on my ideas, not on my words.

Welcome, kakkerlak..

What part of the Netherlands are you in? I live in the USA, have been to your country twice. The port of Hoek van Holland was quite a sight for me! (I went back before they had the chunnel.. took a ferry from england to netherlands.. second trip I flew into Schipol airport).

I love the layout of Amsterdam, how the city fans out from Centraal Station.. the canals, the coffeeshops.. I miss these breakfast pastries I used to get at the bakeries there, they had some kind of pate or sausage in them. (you know the name of what I'm talking about?)

Anyway, welcome!

EDIT: Ah, I just noticed this is an old thread. Well welcome anyhow. One piece of advice.. never ever say to anyone "I'm not a smart person." You have as much right to participate here as anyone else, so just write when you're moved to. Only thing you can do wrong is make too many threads, something I'm trying not to do lol.

Gosh Kakkerlak, My posts are full of mistakes, pretty redundant, and even bore me, but I submit them anyway. What is the opposite of perfectionist? That's me. I'll try to be more like you and you try to be more like me, okay.

haha...Amsterdam is a lovely city

I live in Amsterdam and always enjoy bragging about "my" city. It's a tourists paradise if you ask me; nearly impossible to get lost as long as you know where the north is. Of course that's not where Amsterdam is known for *wink wink*

One of the best features here are the canals. They do not only make the city very romantic, but also serve a practical purpose (especially after Peak Oil kicks in); the entire city center is reachable over water. This is by design because in the past all those houses where used as package house and goods where transported on the canals.

A map of the center

A picture taken from the air

Those little breads with meat inside are called "saucijzenbroodjes" ("sausage link roll" in English). If you Google it the third link is a recipe in case you want to make 'em yourself.

And....ty

Have fun!

Saucijzenbroodjes!

yum yum
Image

I used to have these for breakfast every morning. Thanks for letting me know the name, I must have some again one day. I hate having the memory of a tasty food I can't find here in the US.

I suppose I could make these -- I've gotten pretty good at working with dough. The sausage part might be tricky, as I don't know how the dutch season their sausage. The ground sausage you buy over here is meant to be fried in patties in a pan. It's hot spicy "country sausage," or you can get italian seasoned sausage. (everyone shops at WalMart where I live.. an area of 1 million people and maybe TWO real butcher shops, lol)

I could just get some plain ground sausage, and figure out how the Dutch season it.

First time posting :)

Postby iwhoozy » Fri 19 Dec 2008, 14:33:26

Well, since I joined this site,I may as way follow the instructions, which prompt me to post here first :)
I am currently residing in Europe.I am interested primarily in energy transition and reducing energy consumption to keep our planet living.
But I can't help noticing how much the current energy sources make that nearly impossible. It's just that people are used to using gas, fuel and oil almost everywhere. It's not likely that they would like to change their way of living fast enough to actually make a difference. And there are a chosen few,who actually think on how to improve and change to a better energy resource.Too bad that the few companies, currently controlling the oil market, would like losing their capitals to a better way of living. So I joined this site in a attempt to better inform myself.I'm hoping I'll be able to contribute to the discussions which interest me,but I'm sure it'll take some time.Anyways,Hi to all !

Hello from Nottingham, England

Postby neil2445 » Wed 07 Jan 2009, 08:30:22

Hi All,
My name is Neil and I enjoy taking apocalyptic pictures. I was given A Crude Awakening by a friend, and I think that's where we're headed; some sort of control-freak slavery/population implosion scenario. I'm here to get a better idea of when it'll happen, and to find out more about the oil wars - what scares me most is China and US squaring off in the Caspian region, with the Russians stood watching.
Anyway, here's a couple of those apocalyptic pics I was on about...

8) Your going to cross swords with the moderators right off for posting pictures that are to large. Read the code of conduct piece and figure out how to post so that it dose not waste band width. Also pics shold have captions and apply to some discussion here. This is not a photo album or art gallery.
Welcome by the way.

His picture looks just fine on my giant wide screen monitor. Is the traffic on this site so massive that one large picture will hog up all the remaining bandwidth?
