Yeah, I hear ya. Forget peak oil.

I wanna talk about the snow instead.

It's always nice when it snows in Portland, isn't it? It's expected to reach near 10 degrees here after the cold moisture passes Monday!

The kids are really excited... it's almost like an early Christmas! Plus, they just may get another day or two off due to snow and ice!

I told them maybe we could go to the river and see the ice flow by. :)

I hear ya, man.

I'm trying to merge most of the credit threads together in the Economics forum but there's no easy way to do it.

The oil discussions are few and far between.

Regardless, the credit crisis is dominating the headlines and has more impact on the future of the world than oil (or so it seems).

The two topic have linkages but it's a little tenuous.

We had a similar problem after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 but the credit mess is so massive and so dominating that it is sucking all of the light out of the room.

Oh I'm not so sure we're straying away from peak oil.

It seems to me that over these past four years we've always had a plethora of various divergent topics under discussion.. some under heated discussion too.

Naw... it just seems like that because this new economic problem hit so fast and deep it's on everyone's mind a lot, so it's the topic du jour.

Peak oil is still alive, well, and remains the most favored topic around this joint.

But this snow thing is really neat. We just don't get much around here, about three inches each of the past two years, but we're supposed to get nailed by quite a bit starting in an hour or so. :)

Yeah I'm all excited for the snow- better not be a letdown...I want my 1-3 inches or I'll get grumpy!

Supposed to really dip down at some point...

Now see the way this conversation is connected is that oil production and consumption is at a near maximum worldwide. Therefore massive carbon emissions are leading to record greenhouse gasses that have led to a warming of the globe. And so Portland now gets less snow annually. Therefore our conversation has to do with Peak Oil. See!

I actually don't really mind too much- but I guess I was surprised that there was not a single thread about peak oil. The place sure has changed. As soon as the shortages and/or inflationary period comes back we'll be back to Peak Oil talk.

For now...its the wreckage of the global economy 24/7. Pretty fun and doomery o'course.

The kids are still up checking out the window. Yeah... peak oil... climate change ... ok, 100 years ago Portland would get two feet or more darn near each year. Now we're lucky to get a 3" dusting which is usually evaporated in a day or two. It's due to humans transferring a trillion bbls of The Good Stuff from its underground resting place directly into the atmosphere. I mean, what did we expect, anyhow???
Anyhow, it's still 38.2 degrees and drizzling. Everyone is already a bit disappointed. The Man said it would start snowing by 10 ... over an hour ago ... and it's not even close to snowing.

Actually having a wintery December across much of the USA and Canada does have a big PO implication, people are turning the heat up and because its colder and windier than the last few years it is taking more energy to keep the heat up all across North America. All that extra Fuel Oil and Natural Gas consumption is going to be showing up as inventory draws pretty quickly, which in turn will drive prices up.

Before you know it we will have a zillion unaware homeowner showing up tryign to figure out why oil is cheap but fuel to prevent freezing is so expensive, and this is one of the best places to learn that.

8) I would put forth that all the threads about the economy and food are peak oil related.
Last summer oil went to 145/bl and gas went above $4.00/gallon and the cost of filling up an SUV went above $100 per tank full. Becoming peak oil aware for the first time many Americans that were commuting to work in an SUV (they were upside down on the loan on or close to it) cut back on driving and discretionary spending especially eating out at resturants and sports bars. This led to a major drop in income to the staff and waitresses who work there and more then a few of them could no longer pay the mortgages on their homes which they had bought with ARMs and teaser rate mortgages. This led to an increase in the default rate beyond what the banking industry was capable of dealing with as they had relied on CDSs and Fanni and Freddi to insure all loans no matter how stupid they were at inception. This house of cards was built on the foundation of the community reinvestment act which forced the banks to extend credit to people without a credable ability to pay back the loan as in a waitress working for tips in variable volume business. As the default rate began to rise the accountants began to figure out their true exposure and panic set in. The government tried to step in but only made it worse by bailing out F&F but letting Leman Bros. go under throwing into doubt the soundness of many financial investment strategys and many investers stated withdrawing from the stock market and moved into government bonds and precious metals. This dropped the stock market 35% which made many retirement funds and college endowments under funded and caused many construction projects to be cancelled or postponed, which along with the now frozen credit market halted almost all car sales driving the big three into bankruptcy, which will throw two million people out of work and out of their homes shortly.
I don't know where this ends but you get the idea. If oil hadn't gone to 145 for what ever reason this chain of disaster might not be happening at least not now and such economic chaos was always perdicted by peak oil and will probably repeat itself the next time world demand exceeds production capability.

It looks like the chart of Youporn.com page views is remarkably similar to the oil price chart.

Correlation or causation? You decide.

I think we need to start worrying about Peak Porn.

I think Peakoil.com and Youporn.com are very similar. Both are usually found by accident and followed by the shock finding out how many ways average folks are getting screwed.

LOL- yeah that is a fairly brilliant post Prairie Mule.

Anyways- Eastbay- we got our snow but its not too fun. Its so cold and windy out there its not really enjoyable walking around. I couldn't find chains to my tires today so I walked to work (2 miles). Not too bad...

Oh and this has to do with Peak Oil because after the oil shortages we'll all be walking to work...

Well, here in east county we had about one inch of show, which fell mostly between 9am and around noonish. None since then, although I understand it's still coming down west of the river.

It's now 22 degrees overlooking the gorge, and we're getting steady 20 mph winds with gusts into the 40's. A bit nippy.

What does this have to do with peak oil? Easy. There's hardly any cars on the roads out here. Less driving means reduced demand, leading to more supply buildup, which leads to lower oil prices, which causes those reaching for high hanging costly fruit to give it up. The cheaper oil will get depleted faster and this will in time lead to lower supply which will cause an astounding and utterly shocking run up in oil prices fairly soon.

Do I have that right??

Hey, we just had a 47 mph gust!!
