Yep, I would add Kohl's to that list soon. Every time I drive past Kohl's I see what I saw just before Linens n' Things bit the dust - two or three cars in the parking lot. The Macon Mall just got hit with forclosure for not paying the mortgage. So the idiots down here are putting up another massive shopping center on the other side of town. What do you do with a vacant shopping mall ?

The Daily Herald reported in April that the former Lucent Technologies firm was moving its remaining workers from the Lisle to offices in Naperville. Only 3,400 workers remain here today, compared to about 10,500 during its heyday in 2001.


Not exactly retail but the corporate real estate market is really going under in suburban dupage county illinois where i stay. Alcatel Lucent is set to lay off 276 workers from the lisle location and shuttering the building. This is a terrible idea as around here there is a massive ammount of already vacant office buildings and condos ready for inhabitants that are MUCH cheaper than this bad boy. Combined with all of the closed retail stores in practically ghost shopping malls this area is really feeling the economic crisis. Don't let anyone tell you this isn't real!

Massive huh. That glass building in the front was built as late as 2001. The way the upkeep and security of other facilities in this state, im thinkin partying in one of those parking garages isn't too far fetched!

To see some other closed commercial properties you don't have to look far. Just go left on Warrenville Road a bit and down a little. You'll see 3 more large buildings completely vacant and in shambles!

Closer to town they're still building new retail space though many retail locations remain empty. It's nuts. Construction continues on massive new housing developments. Who is going to live in them, I wonder?

I worked in that area for a while.

In any event, what you see with commercial construction is inertia. Any of these large commercial building projects were planned out and funded 5 years ago in the height of the lending bubble. It doesn't MATTER that buildings next door are being vacated, they keep building the new ones anyhow. At least they will until somebody pulls the plug on the credit line.

Although no NEW credit lines are being approved, OLD credit lines are not being cut off all that fast. To do that would be to immediately bring to a halt EVERYTHING going on. Same reason the plug has not been pulled on the Plastic for the consumer. The system chugs onward with inertia and could who knows maybe for another year or two?

Hard to imagine what any of these big structures will be used for in a decade. Perhaps Malls will be converted over to Communal Housing, the McMansions razed and Farmland sprouting up from under the asphalt?

The events to follow here will be interesting to watch for sure.

When does the Q4 retail and unemployment numbers come out? Is it in Jan of 09 or later?

The Kohl's here in my town (2 hours north of Macon) is pretty busy most times I go by there. They usually have good deals going on.
On the other hand, our local mall is not doing well. Ruby Tuesday closed, the discount movie theater closed, and there are many vacant stores. (and not many well known chain stores to begin with).

I've been wondering for about a year now how Circuit City has managed to stay open. Today I saw a report that they are closing 150 stores to avoid chapter 11 bankruptcy. I went to our local store awhile ago and it was empty. Yet no sales people could be bothered to assist me. The store seemed poorly organized, and felt like some kind of discount warehouse. This store is also across the parking lot from a nice big Best Buy, which offers a much better shopping experience. Bye bye Circuit City.

It will be very interesting to see what becomes of these empty malls and shopping centers. Eyesores for sure. How long until homeless people start moving in on their own?

I can think of at least 3 big empty stores within 7 miles of me that are 40,000 square feet each. The odds of these places every being rented again are slim.
