PMS, I know what you mean. My daughter and I had the longest talk we've had in a long time, it was nice, really. She's looking at art colleges ... New York, Las Vegas ... 8O

Why she doesn't stay in Oklahoma and sell her art right now is beyond me. She's really good. But she says she's not interested in "giving away" prints. She wants to be a concept artist for Blizzard.

I mean, if she does make it, that would be great, but there are so many people vying for that spot it's insane. Not to mention she wants to end up in the corporate office. In France.

I'm not sure she'll end up there, her fiance doesn't speak French, to begin with.

My husband and I always thought this girl would either end up homeless or the CEO of some multi-national, that's the type she is. VERY headstrong. But you worry about your kids. I'd rather them live with us, we could use the help, but I guess they need to experience life on their own.

If she gets stranded in Finland, you can go and rescue her and become her hero (or even more of a hero than you already are  ).

Being stranded in Finland will also pave the way for her becoming a full fledged doomer.

It's a win-win scenario.

I understand what you are thinking about the safety of your daughter, PMS. :)
You want to make sure All the bases are covered, even the smallest chance that Full Doom would break out and she was not able to enjoy the protection that a father can provide.

my father was always on my case about not reading the news.

it was a pattern, he would rag on me about 2 or 3 things that i had done that he considered mistakes (one of them being, not reading the news). so, i would avoid him, because it was very painful to have him ragging on me.

"if only" i had asked him - what news is it that you think i'm missing ? & turned it into a dialogue.

now, a half hour a day of news is about my limit.

PMS, your a standup guy and a good Dad. Just be glad she is not going to Iceland. I hear bad things have been going down there with the banks.

You got to do things on the sly. I had my daughters picking cotton and feeding chickens last week at a farm expo. When my oldest turns 8 she is getting a single shot .410.

They actually make them with pink synthetic stocks.

your daughter might actually be safer in Finland. from a No Dep't of Homeland Security police state point of view, and also in terms of the ability of the Finnish people to cooperate, in a "tough times" scenario. a lot less likely to get hit by a stray bullet in Finland than in the US.

i think Peak Oil reflects a shortage of not so much liquid energy as cooperation. having less of an incredibly energy dense liquid like oil is not the end of the world. it's like having 9 tons of gold instead of 10.

... unless your society has painted itself into a corner by doing stupid things like tearing up mass transit & then spending public resources on the Iraq War & bailing out greedy f*cks on Wall Street.

The economic situation is still quite good in Finland so i wouldnt worry about it. I would say we're definately one of the last ones to come down.

The good folks of Iceland were looking rich and prosperous quite recently. Now they are clearing out the grocery stores and unable to pay for imports. Anyway, she's to stay there until next April. She's pretty good with languages and is expecting to learn Finnish. She told me that it's only a little colder there than in Germany but she got an e-mail today saying that it's really bad weather there now and bring plenty of warm clothes.

I had no idea that it was Iceland's turn to bend over. You can't beat the house. Here's a relevant article I just came across. Wonder who's next? The Ice Storm
Your girl will be OK. If she's going to learn Finnish, she must be very good with language. Buy her some wool sweaters and mittens.

Yes, and she's got a mean volleyball spike. That ball flies faster than the eye can see. But I'm such a worry-wort. She's playing indoors on hardwood courts. She told me she wanted to stick to beach playing because it's easy on the knees and she's had some problems there. The lure of adventure and new experiences made her change her mind. I gave her the low down on the banks and cargoes sitting unloaded for lack of letters of credit and how fast things are changing and keep an eye on things, be ready to bail if necessary. She said she would and she's got her return ticket. I hope she has fun.

My father couldn't speak-a-english when a little boy. Gramps came over from Finland in 1905. I was never taught Finn.

We always thought we were Swedish, but our last name is more common in Helsinki than in Stockholm. I guess we're Swinnish.

Anyway, I think she'll love it. Now's the time to do things like that. Think how difficult travel will be in 5 years.

I don't think things are going to fall apart that fast. Inflation may start up, but she already has her ticket back, so what more does she need over there?

All the Finns I ever met were great people. It should be a great experience for her.

Did that, Pops, but thanks. Had the kids over for lunch today and had a nice talk with her. Her younger sisters went to their Homecoming dance last night and they fell asleep. My son napped too so it was just me and the Adventure Girl chatting away.
