Daughter Scoffs at Doomerism

Unread postby PenultimateManStanding » Sat 18 Oct 2008, 19:21:48

She's going to Finland to play volleyball. I told her don't go, it's too dangerous now. There is a global financial panic that will soon spread into the commercial sphere. She's 27 and she's very sweet to me. Loves her dad. But she's not buying this doomer talk. The thing is she doesn't read the news much. Her last boyfriend lost a lot of money in the stock markets but she's ho hum about it. She knows something is going on but doesn't figure it concerns her. My worry is if she's stranded in Finland it will concern her. She does have a round-trip ticket so that's a bit of reassurance. But not much.

I reckon there are worse places to be than Finland. At least she's not going to Zimbabwe or Canada :)

Don't worry too much, Daddy. :) (I have one too, so I know.) The entire world isn't going to melt down anytime soon. She must have a pretty good head on her shoulders by now. How long is the trip?

I'm aware of all the things you say your daughter is unaware of and I don't buy all the doomer talk either.

I don't know. She leaves on Monday. We're having brunch tomorrow so I'll ask her. You say the world isn't falling apart soon. If these credit markets don't ease up real soon I don't know about that. Governments all over the world are pledging money they don't have to try and fix this emergency. Things are happening fast and I don't like it.

Did you truly expect her to stay? Only on your prognostications of doom.

Better than having moms that put out their cigarette butts on your freak ass. And I mean that in the nicest possible way! :-D If you'd been my kid I would have locked you in the closet too.

yes, but I don't care what you think. Big on Government Conspiracies, seriously lacking on any fundamental understanding of our real position.

You jump at shadows, my friend. We're in a recession, they happen every so often. All the fuss is just everyone figuring out the best way to distract the people while they siphon yet more money away, IMO.

PMS, whatever you do, do not read Last Light by Alex Scarrow. The father is a doomster and his kids don't believe him. Then it happens. You could get a copy for your daughter, though. They have it on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/Last-Light-Alex-S ... 0752893939

She won't be able to put it down.

It could be great reading on the plane.

You shouldn't read it because it will confirm all your fears.

Your daughter may see what her old man is talking about though.

This is no ordinary recession. Not in my opinion. The banks are insolvent and the governments are trying desperately to solve it with funny money. A very bad situation and a very bad time for one's daughter to travel over seas. Maybe I'm jumping at shadows, but I've got a bad feeling about this. I was thrilled when she went to Germany to play volleyball a few years ago, but things have changed now. The situation now is desperate and dangerous.

You have my sympathy. I'm just a couple years older than your daughter, and know that you can't simply spoonfeed people my age anything, even sage advice. The big picture has to come to someone as a realization, in a moment of scary epiphany. Hopefully that moment isn't induced by scores of panicky Scandinavians throwing shoddy yet functional furniture at one another.

I told my daughters, both students in UK, to keep some cash for emergencies (£200'ish), and a supply of canned & dry food to last for a week or so. (This happend before the "financial packages" were deployed).
They asked why they should do this, and I explained that we are very close to economic meltdown.
The situation seems under control now though, but could easily deteriorate again.
If so, we'll have armed forces on the streets.

If your daughter get stuck in Finland she'll be safer than most places. The Finns are a very coherent people and will not take to the streets in a mad stampede.

I've often wondered about the same thing, being stranded in a foreign country post-crash. No doubt, it'll be a nightmare for countless thousands of people with no way to get back home. If you had to get stuck somewhere though, Finland wouldn't be too bad.

Number one, the Finns, as a whole, are probably better survivalists than Americans. I suspect she would be pretty much as safe there as she would on this side of the Atlantic, at least in the short term.

Number two, in my opinion, on this issue you're crossing the line from doomer to paranoid. Risk exists in everything we do, even taking a shower (slipping and falling the wrong way can be fatal). Assess risks in a calm, level-headed manner, and unless a certain desirable action is overwhelmingly risky, proceed with said action.

At the end of the day, no matter how well you outwit the unprecedented natural and manmade catastrophes that likely await us this century, life is still short, just as it always has been. So live a little before you join both the prepared and the unprepared in the final rest.
