Where I live, this is a pretty common alternative to trucks.:

400 gallons of water might be pushing it but you'd be amazed at what these can move. I've got a non-sidecar version which gets 80 or 90 mpg.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Loki', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('eastbay', 'W')hy not something like this modern and attractive model from Japan with a 1.3L 4 cylinder.

But no. Ford keeps trying to stuff the round peg into the square hole.

Don't really care for that thing---basically an ugly minivan with a tiny, nearly useless bed---but I agree with your main point. I'd like a 4-cylinder compact diesel pick up myself, or even a 6-cylinder F150 diesel. The latter would be more than enough truck for 95% of truck owners. Ford doesn't make them of course, but I imagine they could easily get mid/upper-20s if Ford gave a damn about mileage (which they obviously don't).

US auto manufacturers deserve to go out of business. Their incompetence is truly staggering, almost as bad as Congress and the President's. A lot of their failure seems to be due to their radical anti-environmental ideology. Why offer efficient vehicles when you can offer ridiculously oversized gas-guzzling monster trucks?

Ooops you screwed up, it's now time for doomy to pimp slap you with mighty hand of justice. For one your beloved japansse companies like TOYOTA for example don't offer a V6 in their full size truck line. Matter of fact their V8's get worse fuel economy then their american counterparts, and for your information toyota spent BILLIONS on buliding a new truck plant in Texas. So now let's break down their midsize line, the Tacoma. If you do a little research, you will see that the ford actually gets better fuel economy then the Toyota. So now let's compare the small suv lines, if you go to Car.com and compare the Ford escape hybrid to the RAV4 you we see that toyota loses again, and just to add insult to injury the huge fullsize chevy tahoe with a big huge 337hp V8, gets comparable fuel economy to Toyota's small suv. The final point I would like to add toyota has just as many as any other manfactuer out there. Oh and by the way it's us lazy materialistic americans that demend these large gas gizzling vehicles. So if you would like to blame someone look no futher then your mirror.

Actually the big 3 American auto engineers did try to produce fuel efficient pickup trucks but management killed the idea long ago.

Just for the record, there is a four cylinder Tacoma.

Mine gets over 30 mpg with a full load of firewood.

I think that is comparable or better than its American counterparts.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('TreeFarmer', 'I')'m suprised that none of the car companies have at least shown a concept vehicle that is a mix of truck and car. Something like the old El Camino yet with a big enough bed to hold 4x8 building materials.

It's on its way, as usual, too little too late from GM.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'P')reviewed at the 2008 New York auto show, the 2010 Pontiac G8 sport truck is essentially a lengthened G8 sedan - sans a back seat and trunk. Instead, GM's performance division worked a truck bed onto the G8's body, which first originated in Australia as the Holden Commodore. And like the G8's Holden cousin, the sport truck has already been an overseas hit as the Holden Ute.

Powered by the same 6.0-liter V-8 engine in the G8 GT, the sport truck will put out 361 hp and 385 lb-ft of torque. Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, Pontiac says the G8 sport truck can blast from 0 to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, just a hair behind the G8 GT sedan.

We expect the sport truck could get Pontiac's G8 GXP treatment - a 402-hp, 6.2-liter V-8 engine - as early as the 2011 model year. This, of course, provided it doesn't speed to the fate of its forefather El Camino.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'P')ontiac isn't about to talk sticker price, but it looks like it could echo the G8 GT's $29,995 price or command a couple thousand more.

Target audience? The warm "smile states," people with motorcycles and wave runners and the like. The bed is 73.9 inches long and 47.4 inches wide between the wheelhousings.

I wouldn't use one as a work vehicle, but it sounds like it would be fun to drive.

While discussing the fact that the 2009 F-150 does not offer the 6 option for the engine a co-worker of mine pointed out that he though they were saving all the 6 engines for the reintroduction of the F-100 next year.

the blurb I found HERE basically says the same thing and may be where my Co-worker found the information a few months ago.

It is now unknown if the F-100 will go into production but given its comonality with the F-150 putting it into production is not a difficult decision to implement, you switch the engine and lighten the body and so on and so forth as much as practicle and tada its an F-100 instead of an F-150. This is basically the reverse of what they do building the F-250, which is just a beefed up version of the F-150 and often gets built in the same plants.

When I was in Thailand, half the trucks on the road were Mitsubishi Tritons used as Baht taxis.

These trucks have big 4cyl and are workhorses carring up to a dozen people in the back. I wish it would come to America.

They're everywhere here too under the name Mitsubishi Strada, but as private vehicles. Don't think I've seen anyone carry anything on the bed

Apparently, it also goes under the name Mitsubishi L200. Earlier models were sold in the US as Dodge Ram 50.

Ford still makes the Ranger (Small Pickup) which gets the best MPG of any pickup sold in the US today.

I believe I read somewhere that Ford is working on a new 6 cylinder that's turbo charged (twin turbos) that will be offered in the pickups in the near future. Not as much torque as an 8, but just as much HP. Most people don't even use their trucks like a truck though...

It's true that a lot of these manufacturing decisions were made before $80 oil. It will be interesting to see which car companies survive in the near future and what they'll be selling.

I wish they'd bring back the small trucks like the toyotas and suzukis of the 80s. it makes me a little sad that the toyota pickup has morphed into goliath (which is probably smart business in the US), and the Tacoma is now almost a full size thing.

Ford US Sales Down 39% Over Last Year

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '[')b]Ford sees sharp drop in U.S. sales

By Kevin Krolicki
Reuters
Jan 3, 2008

DEARBORN, Mich (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co (F.N) expects industry-wide December U.S. auto sales to drop by some 35 percent from a year earlier with no sign of a turnaround in the first quarter of this year.

Ford, the No. 2 U.S. automaker, expects that full-year sales of light vehicles in the world's largest market will drop to near 13.2 million for 2008, down from near 16.2 million in 2007, Ford's chief sales analyst George Pipas said on Friday.

The only other time the U.S. auto industry has seen a similar 3-million unit plunge in sales over the course of a single year was during 1974 in the wake of the first oil shock, Pipas told reporters.

I'm going to buy an early 1980s Ford F150 or F250 4x4 soon

Postby Ayoob » Fri 09 Jan 2009, 07:39:34

Probably in the next two months. Fuel economy be damned, I'm planning for 8MPG, if not 6. Dual fuel tanks, holding 40 gallons or more of gasoline. Cheesy racing stripes, and jacked up if I can make that happen.

With any luck, the 60" plasma is on the way in March or April. I like the products of industrial civilization!
