From what I've read so far, it seems like the gas shortages are concentrated in the Tennessee/Georgia area. They must be at the end of a pipeline which is being drained out further up stream.

Sounds like the people in Tennessee and Georgia need to bid a bit higher then then people downstream for the gas in the pipeline....if they are willing to pay a bit more then they'll get their gas delivered.

They just need to hold tight and wait for the market to settle.

Something is clearly going on Atlanta (they went from in line with the national average to 15% above) and it's going to take a while for things to readjust.

Eventually some smart tanker driver in Florida is going to make a tidy profit buying gas in Tallahassee and shipping it to Atlanta.

Somebody wrote on a different thread that this would be illegal, transportation of gasoline is too highly regulated.

So since this post is in "Current Events,"it has nothing to do with the issue of Peak Oil. Ok perfect.

So it is what it is, a gasoline shortage. Not related to Peak Oil at all. Awesome.

It has EVERYTHING to do with Peak Oil.

We have been at very low inventory levels for quite some time due to refining margins becoming lopsided, poor refinery rates, which can somewhat be attributed to lack of the "good stuff" (IE decline in light swet imports). This is a good indicator also that demand has not been "destroyed", at least not yet. The price volatility, lack of any significant demand destruction, and a minor natural disaster have caused a large region and major metro area to be brought almost to it's knees.

When did you ever see anything like that before where it was not artificially contrived? Only one time, the Arab embargo. This is all about Peak Oil, but it wont get the press since everyone is in denial.

JIT inventory control wont work when supplies become depleted and any minor or small disruption becomes a huge issue within days. The solution to this isn't easy nor will it be quick in coming. It's another opportunity being wasted by the press and the government to use to educate the masses on where we are going.

Denial is a harsh mistress. Do not fall into the trap that this is not caused by Peaking world Oil production. This has been going on in third world countries for many years. It wont be a one time occurrence here. We've just had enough for all this time and been able to afford it. At some point there just wont be enough around at any price.

This is just an Hors de Ouvre to the main course!

I agree this does has to do with Peak Oil in some sense. But it's not like there are gas shortages because there is an oil shortage. Oil is relatively plentiful at the moment. The gas shortages are caused by closed refineries and the fact that prices don't rise with the (increasingly tighter) supply gasstations get.

This is why i won't direct Peak Oil directly to this. I'd say this just proves that the whole oil/gas-infrastructure, in particular the distribution of petroleum products, is unreliable. But then again, we should've learned this back in '73.

Back on topic:

Just got back from a walk up to the local post office, and the corner Chevron has gas again, $4.09 for regular. People were filling up, but no line. I have no idea why so many areas in metro Atlanta can't satisfy demand, but we seem to be doing just fine in my little Shangri-la of a neighborhood. :-D

Here's what the AJC is saying about the ongoing gas shortage:

Well, I think when the tow trucks can't get out to clear the roads... or when the state patrol cannot get out...

that will be bad... this is just a very small preview

Yeah, the Governor was saying on the news if it got really bad that he'd order schools closed and maybe even declare a state holiday.

Imagine that...hehe. 8O

But yeah, if the gas really ran out, as opposed to a mere shortage, that's when TSHF.

I work for telematics company (think Onstar only for non GM cars). The call volume from Atlanta is freaking crazy. Last week it was Nashville, now its Atlanta. Lots of cars out there driving on fumes.

Maybe it's short term, Nashville cleared up in a few days.

I think you mean the Nashville in an alternate universe. It's not "cleared up" here yet--but it has gotten better. About 50% of pumps are still bagged. Everyone I know has cut out any extra trips, traffic is quite light around town now. Gas is available, but running around $4.25.

I think it's a bit of shell game right now. Where's the problem, uh oh, send the trucks to Nashville, no wait it's Atlanta, send the trucks that way, uh oh, send the trucks to Asheville. regular gasoline is around 3.8-3.9 in Nashville now, and there is plenty of it ( so what if 50% of gas stations are out of gas? who needs 4 gas stations on each crossroad anyway )

That's good to hear. The call volume here has dropped off for Nashville. Things looked very bad a week a go.

diesel conditions in the south east of the USA

Unread postby the48thronin » Fri 26 Sep 2008, 18:42:09

there is a severe shortage of DIESEL in the entire south east.. from Washington DC through Florida to Texas.

gas stations with car diesel pumps are probably still selling, but the truck stops are either limiting to 48 gallons per truck per day, or selling out and waiting for fuel deliveries.

I ran into out of fuel stops in wildwood Florida ( a major fuel stop chain at a major place people going to MIAMI fuel up.) across the panhandle of Florida and up I 65 to I 59.

small mom and pop places are still selling till they run out, but the major chains who sell 3 to 10 tanker loads a day per location are struggling to keep fuel on hand and not always succeeding.

I just got off a long call with a guy in a rough part of Atlanta looking for gas. During the call he spots a gas truck. So then he, bless his heart, and 3 other cars start chasing the gas truck to the station.

And here I was envying the diesels for still having fuel in NC. Pretty much have to wait an hour for gas at my neighborhood. That is if you can find it. LoL I sat in line and kept Playin "Its the end of the world as you know it." It is a wander I did not get shot. :-D

Sitting tonight in Knoxville, tn at the flying j. They have enough fuel they are NOT rationing to 48 gallons, all flying js in AL, SC, NC, and VA are either rationing or out of fuel, their web site to check availability is crashed, but I did get through to it at 430 pm before talking about it on XM radio. gave out the web site it has been crashed ever since GROAN.

truck stops of America web site only lists KNOXVILLE tn as out of fuel. ( it is across the freeway and out of fuel)

Petro claims to have normal fuel at all stops.

I have noticed today several smaller independent truck stops with all but one fuel lane closed off.. Maybe they are slowing sales by limiting the number of trucks that can fuel at once?
