Help needed (history)

Postby Munqi » Fri 19 Sep 2008, 12:40:22

So i got this big history exam coming up which is like a final exam in the finnish equivalent of high school. (not exactly the same, but the closest thing we have.) While i do know most of it quite well there are some things about our history that cant be found in the history books. Information that is often discussed here. Heres where you come in. I have some questions about things like advances in agriculture and oils relationship with wars etc.

First of all, the green revolution: According to wikipedia this occurred in 1945 but ive understood that most of the inventions that we associate with green revolution had infact been invented earlier than that. So what are key components of the green revolution and when were they first invented/implemented?

The second question i have is this: I often hear people talking here about oils role in both of the world wars. Could someone explain this? Are there any other conflicts that were (partly) caused by oil?

Third question: does anyone know where i could find population graphs of individual countries?

I'll probably come up with a few more but those are the most important ones.

The green revolution occurred in 1905 with the invention of phosphates. Wars for oil started with Napoleon. As for population growth, you can easily google that.

The first part of the Green Revolution was when Phosphate fertilizer was invented in the mid 1800's and brought food abundance to Europe and North America. This was soon followed by Nitrate fertilizers in the early 1900's typified by the Norwegian production from Hydroelectric plants during periods of low electricity demand. The green revolution Wikipedia is talking about is when fertilizer and hybrid seeds were introduced world wide to places like India and Pakistan and China which had suffered from perpetual famine, replacing famine with abundance.

Re: #3, this link has a great chart of every country's population history as results of various censuses. Looks like they have a lot of other statistics and it's easy to navigate. GeoHive

I was just joshing, of course. I wouldn't want our Finnish friend to fail his history exam. With nothing but a bunch of deer rifles they fought off the Red Army. Spectacular!

My family has got a great photo of my Finnish great great uncle in his WWII uniform and skis. He was killed fighting the Red Army.

Still hoping i'll get some more answers here. Especially about the wars. :!:

I got one more question: Industrialisation: Was this preceded by any noticable improvement in agriculture and if so, what was it?

Yes, Industrialization was proceeded by an agricultural revolution but most people didn't notice it in their history lessons. Between 1492 and 1750 new world crop seeds were imported to the old world. It was discovered that some area's that were marginal or completely unsuitible for old world crops could grow new world crops abudantly, and as a result the overall availibility of food went up. Also the more varied your diet is the more likely you are to get all of the essential nutrients that humans get from food because different crops have different concentrations of each. Also note that some far eastern crops like Upland Rice were also exchanged due to the discovery of sea trade routes around Africa.

From the new world the big crops were Maize, Beans, Squash and Potato.

I like James Burke's theory that most of the great "revolutions" in technology occur because of many different ingredients coming together at exactly the same time and place.

In the case of the so-called "green revolution" the ingredients were:

invention of industrial-scale agricultural equipment (McCormick/John Deere)
Application of the internal combustion engine (Ford)
Abundant cheap, farmable land (the US Midwest and the South American plains areas) unsettled enough so that the mass-production farming equipment could be used efficiently.
Phosphates (noted above) and nitrogen fertilizers (invented in Germany)

The last piece of the puzzle happened during the early 50's led by Borglum, the understanding of plant genetics which led to the modern hybrids which greatly increased yields.

in Iowa in the 1930's the average corn yield was about 50 bushels per acre (you will have to convert this to metric) but nowadays, the same land (actually a depleted version of the same land) is capable of 150.
